No humbug here either.
But....do wonder at this occasion, when people who are having to choose whether to eat or heat, are celebrating the life of a woman who owns a million pound hat, a £25 million pound chair and 30 Palaces and a £16 billion jewel collection.

Bread and circuses come to mind.

My understanding was that as the actual accession was the date her father died, that she wanted to spend the day quietly remembering her father. When her mother was alive, she would spend the day with her. So all Jubilees have been in the Summer when the weather is hopefully better and people can meet outside. But we are still celebrating the 70 years she has been Queen, not 70 years from the coronation.

There will never be another one, and when our road had a socially distanced party for VE day, we promised ourselves a proper party when the opportunity arose, so no humbug in our road!

Namsnanny

You're not asking people to not comment are you volver?

No, of course not. Just hoped for some peace and quiet and an escape from the fun police, that's all.

Its like being at Butlins in the sixties, isn't it?. Not that I ever went.

?Hi di Hi!! ? Trifle in the canteen at 10am!!

I don’t mind jubilees, just all the bloody mentions of it everywhere and the insistence that we can’t enjoy ourselves unless we go to the communal p*ss up. ?

My God you're a 'miserable ungrateful' bunch!
Hard lines volver.

Parsley3 Tue 31-May-22 12:54:48

Psst.... no chance.

Whisper...

Do you think we could make this a "down with jubilees" thread without somebody coming along to tell us how miserable and ungrateful we are?

This year is the 70th anniversary anniversary of her accession. There was a service to mark this in February when the 'Jubilee year' began. I believe this weekend was chosen for a Jubilee bank holiday instead of the usual late May one, as it's rather better to have a bank holiday in the summer than early Feb.

Okay, I will not be taking part in any celebrations this coming week. Me and my whole family are firm and committed republicans.

However, I am still confused as exactly what we are supposed to be celebrating

The queen became such at the beginning of February 1952 - upon the death of her father. The Coronation was held 18 months later on 2nd June 1953. So......this coming weekend is five months too late for the first and a year short for the second.

what am I missing???
