I guess I must be getting older and grumpier! I used to go with the flow.

I cannot stand
Woke, wokery.
This arvo,
Somethink.
The olds (I do sometimes laugh at that).
Bit (of water)ie drop.

Mind you guess I am very lucky if that’s all I have to worry about.

What are your pet hate words.

I really like the expression "drives me up the wall".
I haven't heard it for yonks!

mayisay Mon 08-Aug-22 13:27:15

Fur baby and uni make me cringe, but the the one word I can't bear is - snuck!

Bellanonna Mon 08-Aug-22 13:19:18

I don’t think any of the examples mentioned would drive me up the wall. However, I do dislike “Don’t get me wrong” when someone is saying something and then feeling they need to defend themselves.

Different to instead of different from
Forward planning - is there any other sort
Tumeric instead of Turmeric

There are some sayings which annoy me, but I think we also have to recognise that language is constantly evolving too. Imagine if we were all still going around speaking as they did in Shakespearean times, for instance?

When politicians try to give credence to their point by saying ‘People want…’. Or ‘People think…’. I suspect ‘people’ are not consulted and it’s what that particular policies thinks or wants.

Basically, at the beginning of every sentence.

Amazing or awesome, when it is just ordinary.

Girls, when referring to anyone over 18.

Furbabies
Hubby

Woke, wokery*

The words ? Or the concept ?

adrisco Mon 08-Aug-22 11:15:24

"You guys", "Cool", "My lovely", "Hon" or "Hun", "I'm good" "Awesome".

grannyrebel7 Mon 08-Aug-22 11:14:09

Just though of another one. Shop assistant "Would you like a bag today?" I'm always tempted to say "No, I'll have one next Friday!"

grannyrebel7 Mon 08-Aug-22 11:11:31

Medal used as a verb.
So fun, instead of such fun.
Right? at the end of a sentence.
Ramping up.
I'm good, instead of I'm well.
Joined up thinking.

I could go on but I don't want to be too grumpy smile

Doodledog Mon 08-Aug-22 11:08:46

My truth/her truth/his truth, what's up with 'the truth'.
I can't say I use 'his truth'; but 'the truth' is similar to 'the facts'. Many people claim to know them, but sometimes they are open to interpretation, just as sometimes people have different 'truths'.

One that annoys me is 'purchase' instead of 'buy'. It's not so bad when it refers to a valuable item like a house, but when it's 'we purchased a bucket from B&Q' it sounds ridiculous.

Others that are irritating when people use them to pepper the conversation include:
'He turned around and said . . . ', Again? He must be dizzy grin
'. . . . . you know what I mean?' Yes, we are speaking the same language.
'At the end of the day. . . .' I go to bed.
'end of!' or 'simples' - unoriginal and grabbing the last word for yourself.
'I'll tell you what it is . . .' You mean you'll give me your opinion?

Go with the flow annoys me!
Grabbing food
Reaching out
Research when they mean 'I googled it'

Guys. Going forward. Thinking outside the box. Blue sky thinking. On the back of this. Heads up. I'm joking you.

Yammy Mon 08-Aug-22 10:42:25

Woke
Wokery
passed instead of died
"As I was saying", to butt in on your answer to what they had finished saying
"Excuse me" when it is used not in the polite form but as a way of butting inhmm

MrsKen33 Mon 08-Aug-22 10:33:07

Chillax. Hate it. David Cameron said it a lot.

PinkCosmos Mon 08-Aug-22 10:28:01

Witzend

Isn’t it usually, ‘Let me be absolutely clear…’ PinkCosmos? ?

One that really grates on me is ‘I’m good’, in reply to ‘How are you?’

Ditto to ‘you guys’ among others, especially when addressing a mixed party of over 60s.

I think you are absolutely correct Witzend grin

nanna8 Mon 08-Aug-22 10:24:01

I always say, ‘good’ when people ask how I am. I think it is an Aussie phrase from way back. As in
‘How ya goin?’
‘Good’
‘ That’s Good’ and the other one,’Yair,no’ has been around since the year dot over here.

timetogo2016 Mon 08-Aug-22 10:20:56

All what you wrote Poppyjo,plus.
Staycation.
I`m not bothered.when asking if they want something.
Please yourself. ditto.
It`s up to you. dotto.
Oh and so many more.

LtEve Mon 08-Aug-22 10:19:14

Hubby, veggies, brekkie, bubs, panties ‘I’m good’ and to think I used to be tolerant!?

Optics - when used to describe the way something appears.

A couple of people have mentioned aks instead of ask
My Nigerian friend educated me but here’s an article on the word. It’s been around for a very long time.
