Why can't I wear this to a wedding?

I have a dilemma and would value some advice, please.
My eldest GD gets married in a few months time. Her Mum, my eldest DD, has asked me what I am wearing for the day.
Just before Covid, my cousin's GD got married and I bought a lovely 2-piece outfit. It is a coffee coloured lace skirt and matching top, both lined. It fits as if it had been made for me, is very comfortable to wear having an elasticated waistband and I like it.
When I told my DD I was planning to give this outfit a second airing, she was horrified. She says I must have something new. My argument is that 7 years ago I went to this wedding alone as it was some distance away so the family haven't seen me in it.
Should I stick to my guns and weather the inevitable fallout, especially on the day or should I surrender and cough up for a new outfit that will likely never see the light of day again?

My advice would be to stick to your guns. In practice, I hate upsetting my AC so would probably buy a new outfit.

So my advice is useless😄😄

If you are comfortable and happy in your existing outfit, go ahead and wear it, I would.

Wear the outfit you have. What’s the point of wasting money on another? Unless of course your daughter would like to pay for the new one.😀

Maremia Sat 15-Aug-26 12:25:31

It sounds lovely. Now that some days have past, how does she feel about it now?

MissAdventure Sat 15-Aug-26 12:25:46

I'd wear it, for the reasons you state, but also because nobody tells me what i may or may not do.

greyfur16 Sat 15-Aug-26 12:25:48

Would some sort of compromise be to wear it and change up the "extras".
If something fits, that's a marvelous thing!

henetha Sat 15-Aug-26 12:28:49

If you like this outfit then I can see no good reason to buy another one. But it's hard to upset your DD isn't it.
Can you talk frankly and explain how you feel?
Personally I find it annoying to be expected to wear new clothes to events. My budget just doesn't like it.
I'm terrible at making decisions. Good luck.

I would wear the outfit you already have for all the reasons you say.

Jaxjacky Sat 15-Aug-26 12:29:20

I’d wear it, particularly as it’s comfortable and not mention it again, if the subject is raised a vague ‘not sure yet’ will do.

Luckygirl3 Sat 15-Aug-26 12:31:04

Just tart it up a bit and wear it.

Usedtobeblonde Sat 15-Aug-26 12:31:33

One of my friends wore the same outfit to her D’s two weddings and no-one bothered.
I can’t remember the timescale .probably 10/12 years apart.
Her D told her if she loved it then wear it.

MissAdventure Sat 15-Aug-26 12:32:31

It's a wonderful thing to find sonething that fits so well, these days. due to my shape

Woukd your daughter recognise it as the same outfit, even?

Grammaretto Sat 15-Aug-26 12:36:50

What a shame your DD knows the story!
Wear it. You can tell her any money saved can go towards the wedding costs.
TBH noone will be looking at you 😂
You will be comfortable.

I wish I had taken my own advice for my DC weddings.

I bought a new outfit for each one. The DS were a year apart so I thought it wouldn't look good in the photos.
Then at DD's wedding a few years later, my Mof the bride outfit was an expensive disaster. I never wore it again and donated it to charity soon after.

SueDonim Sat 15-Aug-26 12:42:01

Oh dear! Have you tried it on since the first wedding so you know it still fits and feels comfortable? That might be where to start. If it does indeed still feel good you could suggest to your dd that you’ll get new shoes/bag/jewellery to make it look different. I have to say, a coffee-coloured outfit sounds lovely, to me, lots of potential for accessories.

If your dd still won’t accept your choice , then suggest she pays for a new outfit! Alternatively, just wear it anyway, she’ll be so busy on the day she probably won’t notice what anyone else is wearing.

Aren’t we all supposed to be recycling rather than buying new all the time? Hasn’t done Princess Ann any harm, has it?
If you don’t wear ‘best’ clothes often it seems excessive to buy yet another outfit that may not prove its worth, especially as your current outfit sounds lovely and you are happy in it.
What does your daughter object to about it exactly?

Norah Sat 15-Aug-26 12:48:33

Odd request, she may have not thought it through.

Wear it, assuming it still fits perfectly.

I dislike excess clothing, I might "not be able to afford another".

Lathyrus3 Sat 15-Aug-26 12:59:02

I’ve used my “wedding outfit” many times, in various guises with a few changes here and there.

I wouldn’t fall out with my daughter over a new dress though. I’d make it the reason for an outing with her.

Though I have to say I wouldn’t wear a a lace outfit in any shade on the neutral spectrum to anybody’s wedding. Perhaps your daughter doesn’t think it appropriate and is trying to find a tactful way of discouraging you?

eazybee Sat 15-Aug-26 12:59:04

Unless there is a specific colour theme for the bridal party, wear it. It is comfortable, sounds lovely, suits you and has not made an appearance at family functions.
Ridiculous to be told to wear a different outfit simply because it must be new.

25Avalon Sat 15-Aug-26 13:07:08

Has dd actually seen the outfit as you said you went to the previous wedding on your own? So you could get away with telling her it’s new which it virtually is. As you like it and feel comfortable in it and it suits you that’s much better than traipsing round all the shops trying to find something as good?
Also it’s GD’s wedding not her mums so it’s really what she would like. Dd is being bossy.

Flippin2 Sat 15-Aug-26 13:10:43

Wear it, it fits well and it's comfortable go with it,or ask your daughter to buy you something new and tell her you probably won't wear it again

kittylester Sat 15-Aug-26 13:12:49

Am I the only one who can see that the daughter is thinking her daughter might ve upset to think she wasn't worthy of a brand new outfit. I wouldn't have even thought about releasing it. Its a big celebration for your family - surely worth splashing out on.

valdali Sat 15-Aug-26 13:14:12

I would wear it too.

Maybe your DD thinks you don't spend enough on yourself & a new outfit would be a treat? But in practice it's often not, there's nothing in the colour you fancy in your style, size & budget & it's just a headache.

Try it on, if you still feel good in it, buy some new accessories & wear it with pride.

BlueBelle Sat 15-Aug-26 13:18:43

MissAdventure

I'd wear it, for the reasons you state, but also because nobody tells me what i may or may not do.

Totally and fully agree, I am me and wear what I feel suits me and no one will change that.

Please wear your lovely sounding outfit I never ever see any point in buying a new outfit for a one off, a wedding or funeral
Why should she compromise Greyfur it’s a lovely outfit only worn once 7 years ago.

Wear it with comfortable pride and be happy you can still get in it, it sounds lovely, hope you all have a lovely day
