I guess I must be getting older and grumpier! I used to go with the flow.

I cannot stand
Woke, wokery.
This arvo,
Somethink.
The olds (I do sometimes laugh at that).
Bit (of water)ie drop.

Mind you guess I am very lucky if that’s all I have to worry about.

What are your pet hate words.

Starting every sentence with So

My bad……..what the hell does that mean

What can I get you guys, in a restaurant

My partner

Happysexagenarian Wed 10-Aug-22 17:07:57

Backstory, instead of history/family history (pet hate)
Reach out, instead of contact
Passed, instead of died
'So' at the beginning of sentences
Hun
My Bad
Aks
Sick
F**k
Sh*t
Woke
Disrespecting
Fed up of, when it should be fed up with
Little Prince or Princess when referring to a small child or baby
Bubs and Bubba (as above)
I'm good, instead of I'm fine or well

And dare I say it 'Mental Health'. I realise it's an important matter for many people but the phrase seems to be very overused now. Every news topic and interview is peppered with references to mental health. I cringe when I hear it and just mentally switch off and don't watch or listen any more.

Two times. What's wrong with the word twice.
' Absolutely' instead of a straight 'yes'

Bazza Wed 10-Aug-22 17:16:03

Any sentence beginning with “look,” mostly favoured by politicians.
Haitch
Heighth. It’s width, breadth but it’s not heighth!
I’m bound to think of loads more but most have been mentioned.

My brother is always saying “I turned around and said …..”.
He also says “I’m going now” when he wants to get the last word in towards the end of a discussion. ?

One (or any number) year anniversary - what happened to first, second etc anniversary? Even worse, one month anniversary!

Grantanow Wed 10-Aug-22 17:17:54

Nah problem

happycatholicwife1 Wed 10-Aug-22 17:19:20

Big Bertha, THANK YOU!!! I'm on other side of the pond, and constantly saying (when I rarely do see a US program), why can't they do something just a little bit classier like the Brits do? I am so everlastingly sick and tired of them taking God's name in vain and using that word. It's just not necessary. There are a whole lot of stories that are truly interesting enough on their own; they don't need to be dirtied up to get my attention. Having said that, I rarely watch regular US television because it is the absolute drags of what can be seen on the box.

Crisis everything nowadays in a crisis
Woke
Could is the media favourite word

Floriel Wed 10-Aug-22 17:27:11

‘Look at YOU!’

Oft said on Come Dine with Me when they open the front door and find their guest standing on the step. Is it just me who finds it very patronising?

happycatholicwife1 Wed 10-Aug-22 17:27:55

Usernametaken, yes. It always reminds me of being assigned someone to do a project with in school. It also makes me think that whoever is using it is trying to put distance between themselves and the person to whom they refer.

HeavenLeigh Wed 10-Aug-22 17:32:59

Someone saying you poor thing ! I’m not a thing ?

Amazeballs, you guys , Ain’t that just so.

Grandmama Wed 10-Aug-22 18:32:21

Adjective 'quite' - it seems to prefix/qualify so many words. Also 'incredible' is often overused in documentaries (Prof Alice Fowler)

'Very unique' - it's either unique or it isn't.
"I feel very humbled to have been offered this job' - no, not humbled, should be 'honoured".

'Less' when it should be 'fewer'.

"I am a friend of Christine's". No - You are a friend of Christine.

Snowbell Wed 10-Aug-22 18:32:27

I mean... lots of celebs start their sentences with this. Listen..... again used by TV presenters. I think it's very rude to insist you listen to them.
Absolutely right. Quiz show presenters such as Alexander Armstrong use this to excess. It should just be right.
Absolutely instead of yes.

Nvella Wed 10-Aug-22 18:39:25

Furbaby , hun, reach out

songstress60 Wed 10-Aug-22 18:42:27

Guys

4allweknow Wed 10-Aug-22 20:06:50

You know. As in I started doing X you know and then had to do Y, you know. I was busy and I didn't like it, you know! No, I don't know!

Doodledog Wed 10-Aug-22 20:13:08

Speaking of patronising, have we had 'bless' yet?

The junior in the hairdresser was asking the usual questions about the weekend, and I said that I was going to a music gig with my son as a birthday present. She looked at me as though I was 100 (not that it would have mattered if I had been) and said 'bless' with her head tilted to one side. I was unimpressed!

Txquiltz Wed 10-Aug-22 20:16:39

Woke!
