What current day words drive you up the wall?

I guess I must be getting older and grumpier! I used to go with the flow.

I cannot stand
Woke, wokery.
This arvo,
Somethink.
The olds (I do sometimes laugh at that).
Bit (of water)ie drop.

Mind you guess I am very lucky if that’s all I have to worry about.

What are your pet hate words.

Stunning.
Used to describe anything in a positive way e.g.he/she looks stunning, a stunning day, a stunning meal etc

Greenfinch Wed 10-Aug-22 20:24:11

Incredible and unbelievable in the same sentence.

Libman Wed 10-Aug-22 20:36:04

Karens
Gammons
Boomers
So fun
Fur baby
Rainbow Bridge

However each to his own - apart from the first three which I find unpleasant.

My bad.and 'watched a fill-em' instead of a film.

ClaraB Wed 10-Aug-22 20:51:12

I’ve always hated gobsmacked

choughdancer Wed 10-Aug-22 21:02:27

Lots of those already mentioned, especially less instead of fewer and fur-babies, but also:
Gifting instead of giving.
Simplistic used when simple is meant.
Different than instead of different from.
Disinterested when uninterested is meant.

Those who have picked 'woke' - what is it that you don't like? The concept of being 'woke' or the word itself? I have hardly ever heard it used in its original way (unsurprisingly, as I believe it was coined by black people in NY), but always hear it used sneeringly in a 'political correctness gone mad' wort of way. Is it the sneering that people don't like, or something about the word itself?

SachaMac Wed 10-Aug-22 22:01:04

With you on the Bless thing ‘Doodledog’ drives me nuts too. It’s being used more & more often & just comes across as crass and patronising.

It’s very likely this has already been mentioned but I do wonder why some people are in the habit of saying “…. then he turned round and said…..” ?

Why ‘turned round’
Where did this expression come from?

Jannicans Thu 11-Aug-22 00:16:53

T being replaced with D as in impordant or bedder for better or worder for water. Headspace, backstory, unpack, or saying 'Thanks for having me' when being invited on to a radio programme.

‘Be kind’. It has taken on such a different meaning for many.

They must get really dizzy from all that turning around.
Here, people say I turn't around.

woke'' sounds like 'yolk' and I don't like that, either. I have a picture of some shrewlike female with a nagging voice and a very judgemental attitude interfering with everyone's life and eavesdropping on peoples' private conversations. Thankfully it isn't used much in my country.

dragonfly46 Thu 11-Aug-22 07:20:42

Oh dear - good thing I don’t see any of you in person - I would be frightened to open my mouth.

MissAdventure Thu 11-Aug-22 07:25:54

I just know mine is the ultimate for making people want to scream.
All glottal stops and yeah/no.

I had kidded myself I spoke fairly well, but I heard a recording of myself a few weeks back.
I was very wrong.

GrannyBeek Thu 11-Aug-22 08:20:19

I know that language evolves, and I’m fine with that, as long as the meaning is what’s intended (“Can I get…” I’m looking at you!).

Having said that, I hate lots of the above, particularly:
Hubster
Rainbow bridge
Holibobs
So…

But my most hated are:
‘amount’ when people mean ‘number’
And people saying harASSed when it should be HARassed. When did that change?

JackieBee1 Thu 11-Aug-22 08:28:29

"Perfect" seems to be creeping in for things that clearly aren't!

TwinLolly Thu 11-Aug-22 09:10:40

'Denied' instead of 'refused'.

I’d guess most of us are quite pleasant and reasonable in real life. Nice to be able to let off steam here !

Dickens Thu 11-Aug-22 09:35:49

I can never regard anyone with any degree of respect if they make an observation and think it more forceful and relevant than any other comment, by stating "end of" as a final sentence.

It smacks of arrogance. "I have spoken, and having thus spoke, that's the end of the matter" - as if that individual has the one and only pipeline to 'the truth'.

Then there's "simples". Usually used by those who think that complex problems have only one simple answer. As in, "make the unemployed work for their benefits. Simples!"

MissEllis Thu 11-Aug-22 09:45:22

I loathe the American phrases (no disrespect to Americans) that have crept into UK usage, in particular "he passed". Passed what? (Passed away = dead.) And the response "I'm good". You may be good, but how are you? (Fine, okay, not too bad, etc.) I could go on...

Agreed. So many instances of “Be kind” often meaning don’t disagree with me or be kind to the things I think are important otherwise you’re unkind.
Quite often used by people who claim to be ‘woke’ but are only so in the circumstances they choose.

hollysteers Thu 11-Aug-22 10:20:25

No problem
Fambobs
Being called Dear

pat9 Thu 11-Aug-22 10:40:45

Also "a male" instead of "a man"

Modompodom Thu 11-Aug-22 12:29:14

Haitch
Snuck
Dove - as a past tense of to dive
Wait up instead of wait
Pretty please
Wait list
Innt it
My bad
So - at the beginning of a sentence.
