Just watched an angry man on one of the news channels complaining that as he lives in the country he has missed his chance to say goodbye to the Queen! He thinks there should have been a procession round parts of the country away from London and they have deprived him of his rights.
No matter what you think of the monarchy she was a woman you didn't know so why would you queue for hours to walk past ?

Alioop Wed 14-Sept-22 18:05:49

It's down to individuals what they want to do. To pay their respects, for memories to tell their grandkids or whatever the reason, it's up to them why they go.
Belfast is not far from me, but I stayed home yesterday and watched it on TV. The thought of queues, crowds and standing for ages isn't for me.

grannyrebel7 Wed 14-Sept-22 17:51:38

I take my hat off to anyone who can queue for 30 hours. As much as I loved the Queen I couldn't do it.

Barmeyoldbat Wed 14-Sept-22 17:48:14

Agree with you Bluebelle, why couldn’t BBC2 and another channel done the coverage and leave BBC1 alone, also the blinking news, we put up with death all day then the news comes on and the only thing happening in the world is the death of the Queen. Sick of it all

When anti-monarchidrs express their views, it's always seen as 'ranting".

Ha ha - probably because they usually end their lecture with ‘Rant over’!

Because they are made to feel that way by responses like "oh here we go again" from monarchists.

MissAdventure Wed 14-Sept-22 17:47:36

That would work for me.

Floriel Wed 14-Sept-22 17:45:52

If everyone stayed at home and watched it on telly there’d be no crowds for us to marvel at as we watch it on telly.

I m not anti royalist but think it’s ridiculous to cart this great big lead lined coffin with a tiny little old lady in it half way round the country, and even more ridiculous for people to queue for 12 /15 hours to look for a few seconds at a wooden box, just to say they ve been there they re not there to pay respects you can pay your respects in any local church or your own home if you want to, without looking at a wooden box for a few seconds, which doesn’t makes your respect any better than anyone sitting shedding a tear at home
There should have been one or maybe two channels dedicated to this on both TV and radio the rest should have carried on as normal and pubic events especially charitable ones should not have been affected
It makes a mockery of it all in my opinion especially when I hear that others funerals are being abandoned would the Queen really have wanted that it’s become mass hysteria

You, ve got it just right in my opinion BlueBelle. It has become mass hysteria just like people did for Diana. I'm not an ardent anti-Royalist either.
One woman in Edinborough was boasting she had been in 7 times for what?

Joseanne Wed 14-Sept-22 17:33:16

Valise = close

Joseanne Wed 14-Sept-22 17:32:35

Utter madness. I wouldn't say that too often on royal threads OP, it's a bit valise for comfort. Quite a few Kings have had that description applied. I believe there was even a mad King Charles who thought he was made of glass and wouldn't let anyone near him. I think he also killed his own brother or something. Oops!

halfpint1 Wed 14-Sept-22 17:32:09

England have 8 bank holidays
France has 11
Just saying

Zoejory Wed 14-Sept-22 17:19:37

But it doesn't matter if we think it's ridiculous. It's happening no matter what.

As far as TV channels are concerned we all have choice as to whether we watch. If we decide to watch other channels that are available. Or even DVDs or laptops.

Not a crowd all along our long suburban entry to Edinburgh but solid lines of just ordinary local people on both sides of the road stretching for miles. Not the massed crowds in the centre of town but, for me, more touching.

Allsorts Wed 14-Sept-22 17:09:34

As you can see by the crowds the majority want to pay their respects. The planning and precision of it and our wonderful service people must be the envy of the world. Not a sound this afternoon from the multitude, that speaks volumes. The people that don’t agree with it all, this time next week, it will be history.

FarNorth Wed 14-Sept-22 17:03:06

Beckett

How is it "showing respect" to expect her body to be trundled around the country like a fairground sideshow? Why not have her mummified, encased in the glass sarcophagus and put on permanent display hmm

I was trying to work out my thoughts - and you've written them!

In this case, it’s the anti-monarchist herself who used the word ‘rant’.

Grandma70s Wed 14-Sept-22 16:27:27

I’ve watched everything so far. This afternoon’s ceremony taking the coffin to Westminster Hall was beautiful and moving - and that wasn’t even the funeral. I love seeing the views of London, and the views of Scotland were wonderful. We are so lucky to see it all on television, much easier than going there!

I’m not a particularly strong monarchist, but the history involved is fascinating. It is like watching living history.

My closest friend is anti-monarchy. She is coming at teatime tomorrow and has warned me she’s going to rant, so I’m prepared. I’ll just let her.

M0nica Wed 14-Sept-22 16:06:51

I have every sympathy for Paddyann in the personal distress this event is causing her. But, as she wrote I thnk they need to get a life!I dont care how many of you it offends

I think my response was quite appropriate.

volver Wed 14-Sept-22 16:02:49

All along that route, except, obviously, when flying south, the route has been lined, 6 and 8 thick with those wanting to pay their last respects.

That is not true.

This is not for reasons of pedantry but because we are already seeing hagiography with respect to the late Queen. I watched the whole journey from Aberdeen to Perth because I know that area well. Much of it is countryside and there were long periods when there was nobody lining the route at all. That's what I would expect, it's in the middle of nowhere.

It does her no justice at all if we make things up and by so doing exaggerate her impact on the people of this country. That is how myths and legends start.

nadateturbe Wed 14-Sept-22 16:00:24

Each to his own. Apparently the queue at Westminster stretches for 2 miles. Definitely wouldn't join that.
I do think though that it's wrong for operations to be cancelled and surgeries closed.
And many are losing much needed income on Monday.

The angry man is being ridiculous. The Queen can't be trundled all round the country fgs.

Barmeyoldbat Wed 14-Sept-22 15:56:02

I think you are being very unfair to Paddyanne, you talk about respect but where is yours for Paddyannes feeling at a very sad and emotional time for her
