What to do with left over coleslaw?

Just that really.

I love coleslaw with somethings and buy a small tub most weeks but, almost inevitably, it goes out of date before it's all gone.

Any inventive ideas for the left overs please.

I think your first instinct - the kitchen bin- was the right one.

My Mum always made her own, and we had it as a side with spaghetti bolognese. They went together surprisingly well 😋

If it smells ok and looks ok I would eat it. It’s easy to tell if coleslaw is off.

I draw the line when it starts to ferment and bubble. grin

I would just eat it. Col slaw is safely edible for ages after the 'best by' date. The mayonnaise contains vinegar which is a preservative.

I dislike bought mayonnaise, it always has far too much mayonnaise or dressing or whatever it is.

I prefer col slaw French style, just enough dressing (often not even mayonnaise), to hold it together slightly and no more.

I don't often have the time, or the ingredients, to rustle up coleslaw when we decide it might be nice with whatever we decide to have for lunch.

I make my own with any combination and addition of fruit nuts and seeds. I make enough so there isn’t waste the stuff in the shops is too gloopy for me.

Bin obviously as it doesn't keep. The M and S dates are very short.

Marydoll Fri 20-Jan-23 08:47:17

It doesn't go to waste, because I make just enough for our needs, Kitty.

I use it up at lunch time in sandwiches. It goes with cheese, tuna and most meats or just a plain salad sarnie. We have it as a side with chicken or burger and chips. I can easily just eat a nice coleslaw with a teaspoon to finish it up or simply mix it into pasta with other leftovers and some cream cheese.

What is this 'meals are planned' of which you speak? grin

How can you not use a small tub within a week? Confused!

It depends what we eat really.

Yes it does I agree. So perhaps only buy it when certain meals are planned? Or wash off all the goo and add the remaining veg to a stew or soup?

Casdon Fri 20-Jan-23 08:15:54

If you like pasta for lunch, you can add coleslaw and tuna, salmon or whatever to the mix, I usually add olives and chopped tomato too.

I agree with nanna8. I like coleslaw but often it ends up in the bin. I like it with Avocado and it’s quite nice in sandwiches with ham or in a jacket potato. Don’t buy it very often at this time of year.

I feed it to my hens, they absolutely love it!
As long as it's not well past its date obviously

kittylester Fri 20-Jan-23 08:12:16

Homemade or bought it still reaches it's use by date - what to do with it them?

I buy the luxury version and do often add sultanas and peanuts. Which makes it more of a waste. sad

I always make my own. Not keen on bought coleslaw. We invariably eat it up

I make my own too, so nothing goes to waste.
I love red apple in it.

Yum oo- I’m going to try that one for sure!

Sorry, I would chuck it straight in the bin! I am always reminded of a particularly grim Spike Milligan anecdote when I see the word coleslawsad

nanna8 Fri 20-Jan-23 07:59:23

If it was out of the use by date I would chuck it because nothing is worth risking a stomach upset!

The problem with coleslaw is that you just have to eat it whether it goes with what you're having or not, or it goes off.

I bought on impulse a 300g tub of 'coronation' coleslaw from M&S as the coronation bit appealed to me at the time - I then had to eat it over the next three days to ensure it wasn't wasted, so ended up tailoring meals around the pesky coleslaw! But it was very tasty.
