Have just been to Blackpool this weekend and was shocked to see on sale cannabis flavoured popcorn and candy floss. Am i being unreasonable in thinking that these are not suitable items to be seen on sale at a family orientated resort. Candy sticks looking like cigarettes were banned.

How strange - when we used to disguise the unpleasant flavour by putting it in chocolate cake! Living in London, I don't know anyone who isn't familiar with the smell.

Just because something is brightly coloured and in sweet form, doesn’t mean it’s for children. Adults go to Blackpool and eat candy floss too! Frankly I think it sounds vile, but let’s not confuse ‘something on sale where children might be present’ with ‘children’s sweets’.

These items are not Cannabis, they are CBD oil which is an entirely different thing. CBD oil does not have any of the chemicals which make you high (THC) but are good for pain control or lessening anxiety. For example, our grandson who is ASD has had really good results for CBD drops when he was younger and now Gummy Bears. His parents tried it in desperation after doing a lot of research because he was so distressed, wouldn't stop shouting at the top of his voice (stimming) and was completely unable to say any words at all. 3 weeks after taking them, his Speech and Language Therapist could not believe the difference in him. They were really thinking that they would have to intervene medically to stop his distress. She was astonished that he started to communicate with her and actually started to repeat short sounds. Whilst he was learning to talk, she was more than happy to advocate that he continue to take it and used him as a case study. His EHCP was changed 3 times with his targets extended because his progress was startling.
His parents no longer use it every day because they don't want him to become so used to taking it all the time even though it is not addictive. It just doesn't work so well. However, if his behaviour starts to become problematic, they use it for a short period of time and always see an improvement.

I tried it for pain but it didn't make much of a difference so I didn't continue with it. My Mum found it really useful but her partner just couldn't get it into his head that it wasn't illegal so he made so much fuss, she gave it up.

It is still illegal to sell cannabis so these items definitely won't be cannabis. Do your research about CBD oil and you might be pleasantly surprised.

I hate the smell. It makes me want to retch, so I can’t see how people even enjoy it, even more so sweets made of it. Sweets are meant to be tasty, not blech 🤢

What a horrid thing to sell! I hate the smell, it’s awful. And dangerous too in many ways. Apart from increasing your chances of getting mental illness it’s dreadful if you got a dealer nearby. Druggies wandering around at all times of the day and night - scarey!

Elegran Mon 24-Jul-23 21:33:39

Like a bonfire of green wood in the rain with added throat-grabbing undertones.

Shellie80 Mon 24-Jul-23 21:24:11

It’s a very distinctive smell. Hard to describe. I’d never smelt (smelled?) it until I moved away from my home town in my late 20’s. I then had some neighbours who were regular users. Horrid.

Elegran Mon 24-Jul-23 20:24:49

If it is beside the sweets, it is impossible that children don't buy and eat it. If it is labelled "Not for children" or kept on a higher shelf they are even more likely to want it!

Hithere Mon 24-Jul-23 19:51:51

Sure it wasn't for adults?

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 24-Jul-23 19:37:22

I have only smelled it once, in a taxi in London. Absolutely vile. I had to ask what the stench was as I had no idea. It’s certainly not on the wind round here I’m glad to say. Surely parents don’t allow their children to buy these ‘sweets’?

welbeck Mon 24-Jul-23 19:09:48

how lucky are the few people who do not know what it smells like.
amazed you've managed to dodge that over the last 30+ years.

BlueBelle Mon 24-Jul-23 18:51:38

Oh ok then Baggs and Nora I’ll rephrase that most people know what cannabis smells like I m amazed if anyone hasn’t smelt it now a days it’s on the wind everywhere

Iam64 Mon 24-Jul-23 18:45:23

Yuk. Yes Trading Standards need to look into this

lemsip Mon 24-Jul-23 18:22:03

was in the news back in 2022

"Blatantly targeting kids and getting them interested in drugs - that is pretty low.”

The shop - right on the promenade and close to Blackpool Tower - also sells cannabis flavoured sweets called “Ganja Rock”.
Parents lash out at cannabis-flavoured popcorn sold at the seaside
The item - branded “from Colombia with love” - is not made from cannabis but ingredients include sugar, artificial flavouring and E-numbers to turn it green
........................................

I think trading standards should check it out though.

Does cannabis "flavour" contain any cannabis?

Bluebelle, we don't all know what it smells like.

I've no idea what it smells like.

Why place such near children's treats?

For the reason elegran suggests?

Whoever it is ostensibly aimed at, it shouldn't be on sale alongside the children's sweets. It seems very like grooming of a future market by the cannabis bulk sellers!

BlueBelle Mon 24-Jul-23 16:55:58

Well we all know what it smells like !!
I think you do need to contact Trading standards that’s just awful even calling it that is wrong on all levels

Shellie80 Mon 24-Jul-23 16:54:43

That’s awful.

welbeck Mon 24-Jul-23 16:54:27

you could contact the local trading standards to see if there are any regulatory issues.
local to the trader.

essjay Mon 24-Jul-23 16:50:23

granfromafar unfortunately i think it was aimed at children, it was with all the novelty rock etc that children love and even worse it was coloured green and i agree with you i have no idea what it tastes like although i am familiar with the smell from having worked in student accomodation

Moonwatcher1904 Mon 24-Jul-23 16:19:45

The world's gone mad.

granfromafar Mon 24-Jul-23 16:10:01

Well I have no idea what flavour cannabis has and I assume most children wouldn't either. Seems a very odd thing to have on sale. Maybe aimed more at adults?
