Puffed Sleeves - Argh!

AIBU to wonder why so many tops and dresses have puffy short sleeves this year? I'm sure they can look lovely on slim, tall, young things but what about the rest of us?

I tried one on and in the mirror was the 'Incredible Hulk' (except not green).

I recommend making your own clothes, then you get what you want!

I hate puffed sleeves as they make me look like an American footballer! And I don't think they're particularly flattering on anyone.

Granmardarby10 ... "Wish there were more elbow length sleeves on t shirts and tops plus more “interesting” necklines". ...
Oh, yes, the necklines! I'm so fed up with all the high-necked, and tie-necked blouses, and the crew-necked t-shirts! For those of us who are well endowed, they make us look mumsy, buxom and frumpy! Give me nice scooped-necklines, v-necks, etc. Why can I never find any nice tops, with flattering necklines anymore? Who on earth is designing all of these unflattering clothes? They must either be men, who have no idea what women want, or students fresh out of fashion college, who have no idea what anyone over the age of above 30 wants!

Do American footballers wear puffed sleeves Nansnet
🤣🤣🤣
I totally agree about the v neck etc I like a lower neckline can’t stand the round neck looks like Les Dawson with his heaved up boussies

I love puff sleeves, in fact I'm currently making a jumper with puffed up sleeves. It's true that they suit some people more than others. They look best on feminine women.

BlueBelle, who knows? ... some might!wink But, of course, you know that I'm referring to size/width of my shoulders with puffed sleeves!grin

Yes, exactly ... Les Dawson is the perfect example!

I like the effect of the one on the catwalk here and also do still have a big-sleeved jumper from about 1980 - It's lovely and SO comfy. Knitted by my mum. The fullness starts below the shoulder though - but you could fit a small person in lower down! It's like a dusky lilac version of Claudia Winkleman's red one she wore on Traitors
There are lots of generally puffy-sleeved jumpers out there. They aren't all horrible you know!

NotSpaghetti ... nice on a 6 foot, size 0 model, but I'd look like the honey monster in that!grin

The post was about puffy short sleeves, not long full sleeves gathered at the bottom, and to my mind they are different styles. What I think is unflattering on adults is a short puffy sleeve that finishes on your upper arm, because it makes your shoulders look broader and your upper arms look fatter. It does look nice on small children though.

I agree puff sleeves look nice on children. I think it's because their shoulders aren't wide and they have no bust, thus avoiding that triangular top heavy look. The empire line works best.

I don’t like ‘cap sleeves on t shirts either, for me elbow length looks better. I also don’t like tiers on dresses, too 1970s! They have to be cotton too. I guess I must just be fussy.

One year marks did a lovely round neck t shirt, not too baggy, long enough and elbow length sleeves. I bought one in every colour!

I haven’t liked puff sleeves since I was about sixteen. They make me look top heavy, and I’m top heavy enough without any additional puffy sleeves.

I love Pufff sleeves ... and ... sorry if the poster looks like Incredible Hulk may i just say ( although I know I will be shot down for being cruel etc ) .. maybe the poster shouldnt think all fashion is for her ?

Frenchgalinspain Wed 28-Feb-24 11:27:10

I do not care for puffed sleeves on blouses or dresses.

I only wear sleeveless or 3/4 sleeves or long sleeved blouses and roll up the sleeves to just below elbow.

I am definitely not a puff sleeved type of woman and I am a size 8. It just is not my look .. I am very tailored even in jeans ..

Missiseff Wed 28-Feb-24 11:31:17

Stella14 Wed 28-Feb-24 11:42:32

Nannan2 Wed 28-Feb-24 11:45:29

Astitchintime Wed 28-Feb-24 11:46:54

Nannan2 Wed 28-Feb-24 11:47:32

Those in Josann's pics are puff sleeves.

Elusivebutterfly Wed 28-Feb-24 11:57:46

I always liked puffed sleeves and wore them in my 20s and 30s. I do have narrow shoulders and used to be skinny so I was the right shape. I don't wear them now as I think they suit younger people.

I was a bridesmaid at the age of thirteen; at that age chunky and with braces and glasses. The dress was scratchy, I had a 'petal' type nylon hat on a wire alice band grip that was digging into my head, it was a boiling hot day, my shoes hurt, and to finish off the torture the dress had scratchy puff sleeves with a tight band around the upper (chubby) arm. I have never knowingly got within ten feet of a puff sleeve since then.

My daughter has two white puffy sleeve "work shirts" - one is like this bit white - may even be this I'm white.
They are both pretty smart - but she is slim!
