I think I'm a reasonably good grandpa and enjoy our flock of grandkids, some in their mid 20's now, but I think I may have stumbled into a ladies group.
I enjoy ladies, my wife and I having just celebrated our 62nd wedding anniversary, but my conversations would be more in touch with enjoying the kids from a male viewpoint.
Dave A doesn't seem to have posted again.
I'm not bothered if men post, so long as they don't claim to represent 'the male perspective' and expect deference. If there are men here and we don't know, it's probably as it should be. We do get to know one another over time though, so if it got out that a poster is male it wouldn't matter either.
And Grumppa who doesn't post half enough.
It’s classic for a predatory male to want to come on to a site like this for a power trip.
We don’t know how many men we have here on GN, we just assume if a poster is called Daisy or Lily that they are female.
Unfortunately there have been same bad experiences with men on this site, I think most of us will remember the dreamer and the antipodean!
On a positive note we have Mick our wonderful Gentleman on the morning thread.
As a matter of interest do many men post on Mumsnet? Most of us like to feel we belong when we join a group so I can understand your hesitancy Dave. Maybe Gransnet needs a new name so everyone knows they are welcome to join as they are. Give it a try Dave -loads of subjects to choose from.
Have you posted since asking if you would be welcomed, Dave?
It is possible - and the norm - for men to enjoy the existence, appearance and company of women without being MCPs and wishing to dominate them or harass them. A minority have some twist in their personality, development or cultural imprinting that causes them to be unable to co-exist , but on the whole the default reaction for women on meeting a strange man for the fitrst time is to assume that what he enjoys about women is their generalised company. Just as most women enjoy the generalised company of men.
That assunption may be contradicted on further acquaintance, of course, but to demand the assurance on first meeting is rather insulting.
“I enjoy ladies”……..I am hoping this was an error and the word company was missed out.
Hello, DaveA, welcome to the group.
Congratulations to you and your wife!
There are men in here, I've never seen anything to say men aren't welcome and it's 'Gransnet' which, to me, is short for 'grandparents'!
I look forward to hearing more from you.
Greetings, DaveA. Male reinforcements welcome.
Flattery will get you everywhere, Elegran!
Most of the men who join have the same attitude, lemsip. They just post, without a fuss - at least, the ones who stay just post. The ones who feel it necessary to add "As a man . . . " to every post seem to leave after a short time.
Sometimes their sex is relevant to their opinion, sometimes it isn't, and sometimes they appear to be more interested in proclaiming their masculinity than in chatting. A few have been the equivalent of virtual flashers - and one went as far as sending propositioning emails to a dozen or so female posters, all at the same time - heaven knows how he would have coped if they had all agreed! He vanished from the forum PDQ when GNHQ were alerted.
when I registered for gransnet I just started to post on what ever I was interested in. i do not see the need to announce the fact that 'i'm new here'.
It's not some exclusive club! women getting excited because a male is joining, or not after all the silly responses.
Of course they do but it's always worse than for women. Like a cold for men is man flu 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.
I am not knocking men but my darling husband died 20 years ago aged 47. He would hate what I use his prized chisels for. But I found them brilliant for cutting through stubborn roots with a hammer. I am disabled but my husband was brilliant at adapting things so I could do things my way. I always think how would he do it.
My husband always said grey hair was distinguished in a man but old in a woman so he had a thump. He also said the old proverb patience is a virtue possess it if you can really found in a woman but he always missed the rest . Which was rarely in a man🤣🤣
Yes- do men have a menopause, is that the time when they do crazy things in their 50s?
DaveA
Thanks for the welcoming comments and advice offered. Offhand I think I would skip the discussions of menopause and facial hair.
Don't know if I can add anything worthwhile to your discussions but I'll listen and pop in when I feel that I can interject a semi-intelligent comment or question.
I should add that my computer skills are quite limited and at my age, unlikely to improve.
I would welcome the male perspective on menopause.
It perplexes me that when we click Menopause on the top dark pink menu it goes to a feature headed "Menopause weight gain" and features a picture of a man trying to button his jeans. It is definitely man as he's attempting to button from left to right and looks, well, man-shaped.
So my question is: Does a man's waist expand in sympathy with his wife's? Each time she craves chocolate does he eat a bar of Galaxy to keep her company?
Does he grow a beard to show solidarity when she's browsing the tubes of Veet in Boots and wondering if sandpaper would be more effective?
These are important questions to which I am expecting semi-intelligent answers.
Why not have a go posting on the Good Morning Thread, opened every day by Mick.
You can tell us a bit more about yourself if you want and what sort of things interest you.
No worries about your computer skills. You don'r really need any.
Just join in, and be yourself. You won't get any special treatment for being a man (not from me, at least) but that counts for better and for worse
.
Dave my hands tremble all the time and type with one finger. I ramble on different threads but only about things I have personally experienced. Some threads are serious but we still just talk about anything thing that is happening in our lives. Yes there are some nasty posters but they are few and don't last long on a thread.
Age is but a number and my mom always said older never old. And no matter how old we get we can still learn new things. I am certain you have experienced many things in your life that would help others or funny stories to tell.

My husband often asks, "What are the Grans talking about today then" 🙂
Have we scared you off, Dave ?
Your viewpoint would be most welcome Dave
My husband sometimes reads things on here. He also reads stuff on Mumsnet... he doesn't contribute to either site (as far as I know
)
... or maybe he does!!😱
Welcome Dave A.
Definitely welcome, DaveA. It's interesting to get more men in the mix.
