Car stereos blaring out!

Yesterday morning we were woken by a car stereo at full volume, it was 7.30, the car reversed into a space then the occupant spent a few minutes fiddling on her phone and eventually turned off the engine.
To my surprise she was a suited and booted woman of around 50.

This morning a car has just pulled away with the stereo on full.

Why do people do it?

AIBU or should car sound systems have a legal limit?

MissAdventure Sun 07-Apr-24 13:18:08

I think it's the word "porsche" that annoys people more than anything else.
Why, I've no idea.

I would love to be able to live in Monaco. If anyone outside can hear sound emitting from inside your vehicle it's off to the police sration with you. Can't understand why people risk their hearing having music bouncing off the surfaces of a car. DH who was deaf said all those born in the 00s will be deaf by their 50s with all the noise they subject their hearing to. May be why so many talk so loudly on phones these days.

I am with you GSM. We have always had soft-top sports cars.

On the open road, no one around, music playing, wind in your hair, " utterbliss"

Feeling all the endorphins without getting sweaty in the gym.

Not all Porsches are Posh Porsches!
Some look quite ordinary.

I just comfort myself with the thought that they will be deaf before too long!

Secondwind Sun 07-Apr-24 13:33:29

I’m an aging rock chick too, when I’m sure it’s not disturbing anyone, I crank up the volume!

Nannan2 Sun 07-Apr-24 13:40:45

Why cant folk realise (whatever their age!) That you can still hear the music from the outside of the car even when they have doors & windows shut!!! We arent deaf you know!- maybe thats the problem? Maybe a lot of the oldies on here are saying they play music loud when in the car, maybe they are HARD OF HEARING??-Well we on the outside (mostly) are not! What is wrong with you? Just inconsiderate. They blame a lot on young 'uns but my 25 year old has been driving since 19- and only ever puts music on at a reasonable level! They maybe should ban music(LOUD music at least) in cars as it must be so distracting like that when youre driving along & singing maybe and enjoying it- how can you put full focus on the roads?!

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 07-Apr-24 13:46:11

I am not hard of hearing and I only play loud music on the open road, where the vast majority of my driving is done. I am always fully focused on my driving and not distracted by music. I might be 73 but I do object to someone probably not of dissimilar age calling me an ‘oldie’. To my mind those showing their age are the ones making the negative comments.

MissAdventure Sun 07-Apr-24 13:47:58

A car is a car, is a car, to me.
Posh or otherwise.

I wouldn't know a Porsche from a Pinto.

As long as someone gets in it and it takes them where they need to go, who cares?

It's fairly obvious that people who earn well will have more expensive clothes/houses/cars/habits.

It defeats the object to have a well paid career and drive a heap of s***.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 07-Apr-24 13:49:43

😁 I’m so glad you’re back, your posts always make me smile!

Callistemon21 Sun 07-Apr-24 13:55:48

I'm "car-blind" too, MissA

If someone goes past and waves I don't have a clue who they are because I just don't recognise cars.

Mine's a rather old Toyota, low mileage, one lady owner, well, two actually although the first one was a bloke, serviced, maintained, new tyres, MOT, any offers? I fancy a Porsche.

People do it on here often, in far more "in your face" ways than GSM.
She is not at all boastful.

Nannan2 Sun 07-Apr-24 14:08:16

Tsk tsk GSM- I meant older drivers in general not just you but if you've assumed that as well?.... no i'm not as old as you just 60 and i do appreciate a whole range of music- but not at expense of others wether in or out of house or a car. (Also i look much younger due to good family genes)But thats nothing to do with it at all.A lot of richer folk are very 'entitled' i find.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 07-Apr-24 14:13:02

Thank you MissA.

If you had read the full thread, Nannan2, you would have seen why I mentioned which car I drive. And I drive it because I like it as much today as when I bought it 17 years ago. I’m not special and have never claimed to be. And I have not labelled all young people as half wits, nor would I - that would be ridiculous. It is however true that the vast majority of young people could not afford to buy and insure this model of car. I bought my first P (better not say the word as it seems so inflammatory) when I was in my 50s. You don’t know what my car cost and I’m not about to tell you. Obviously I should not have any outward trappings of a long and successful career in the law. My car and house are the only trappings I display. Perhaps you like expensive jewellery and holidays - I don’t.

I guess I’m on here for the same reason as you - the kindness and scintillating debate.

vegansrock Sun 07-Apr-24 14:15:18

Let’s face it, noisy expensive gas guzzling cars may be popular with some but are bad for the environment and are unlikely to exist in their current form in the future. It selfish of anyone to assume that others want to hear their music or their noisy engines. There is something about people being in the bubble of their own car which make them immune to others, hence the fury at any attempts to restrict them . Why do we need powerful cars capable of reaching 160 mph when our speed limit is 70? Answer - we don’t need them but the car lobby is more powerful than the pedestrian lobby so they take precedence.

Oh gsm isn't a friend, in fact, we have been very much less than friends at times!

I just don't find her at all boastful (whatever her other faults are! grin)

Callistemon21 Sun 07-Apr-24 14:19:19

I bought my first P (better not say the word as it seems so inflammatory)

Just call it a Punto, GSM!

My neighbour had a Fiat Punto, he said FIAT stood for Fix It Again Today.
Probably cost more than a P*****e in the end.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 07-Apr-24 14:20:18

No, I did not assume that ‘oldies’ referred only to me - for a start, it’s the plural - and others here have also expressed a liking for loud music and sporty cars.

You are correct, the fact that you look younger than your age is irrelevant - but at the risk of making your ‘boastful’ antennae twitch, so do I.

Callistemon21 Sun 07-Apr-24 14:20:34

I think i'll give gransnet a breather as its full of all this nonsense these days ....

Good idea, it is nonsensical
But we like it!

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 07-Apr-24 14:22:24

I had a Fiat in the early 70s but it was a Strada. I was going through a green and economical stage. I grew out of it. I blame it on working in the public sector at the time.

MissAdventure Sun 07-Apr-24 14:22:56

Oh, is the word "Punto"?
I thought it was "Pinto". blush

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 07-Apr-24 14:23:31

Bye bye Nannan. Wish I could say it’s been a pleasure.
