Online retail gone wrong

Somebody needs to give the directors of M&S a good talking to.
Many of us have shopped there for years for underwear, clothing and food. They have now have now gone ‘up-to-date’ online but just can’t get it right. If you search for clothing by size or colour it ignores the fact that many of the items it offers are not in stock in your size or colour. So frustrating when there are thousands of items to look at, and many, if not most, are just not available to you. Other online retailers can do this, so why not M&S?
When items arrive they are, more often than not, wrongly sized. I have just ordered an attractive jumper in my size and when it arrived it would fit someone 3 or 4 sizes larger - no, not just a loose fit just blooming enormous! A second item was also badly sized.
I have just tried to return these items to M&S and even that is fraught with bugs.
I put in the return online but then when I got to the ‘print return label’ option it didn’t function. I eventually managed to print it from my phone. I had also received an email which stated I should show the QR code below at my post office, the QR code was not visible on the email.
By the way, I was an IT professional and therefore probably better online that most of my generation.
I have had enough! I won’t be shopping online at M&S any more. How many other customers have they lost the same way?

Oh, I was just going to go and try to do an online M&S shop ....

Boots online is terrible too!

I use M & S online frequently, click and collect at local Food Hall.

I know my size, DH’s and that of the GC who I buy for, so far never had a problem.

M&S has changed the leg lengths of trousers so I had to return some as they were about 3" too long. It seemed quite easy, took them to our local Food Hall.

I agree re the sizing, I oredered Linen trousers which were a great fit so ordered in different colours , they were all different sizes.

I am happy with the return process as there is a food hall near me where I take the returns and it prints the label from the barcode on the package.

Many firms like the ‘notify me when back in stock option” as it means you may well still buy it rather than it doesn’t appear in the search due to bing out of stock.

No problem here, I too have a food hall nearby for collections and if necessary, returns, not that much is returned. Sizing for both myself and Mr has been fine over the last year, I find the ‘email when back in’ function useful too.

I recently bought 2 pairs of trousers from M&S identical apart from the colour. I am a size 12 Short - when they arrrived one pair was 2 inches longer than the other 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve had other problems with their sizing too.

Auntieflo Wed 17-Apr-24 12:12:23

Had no problem with M&S recently, but with Damart.
I like their pull on trouser/ jeans, so ordered two, same size, different colours.
One pair is definitely a better quality than the other, which is a bit like a limp rag. They tell me I am mistaken!

Have bought two pairs of jeggings same size different colour one fits nicely, other is snug.

Last year I went to M&S looking for curtains. I searched high and low and couldn't find any. The girl on the desk said it had all gone on-line. I said I liked to feel the quality of the fabric and also check the colour. She said she could order a pair for me to collect but I would have to return them myself if I didn't like them. I walked out and bought some from Dunhelms although they weren't really what I wanted.
I'm afraid this is the price we are paying for other people who love on-line shopping.

I have no trouble with M&S returns- either collected (free) from the house by Evri or if I take the item to the drop off/pick up post in store.
Scan the barcode and a label pops out, stick it on and “post” through the slot provided.
A matter of minutes.
I also regularly buy two sizes to allow for erratic sizing and also because it takes the value over £60 so home delivery is free.

My nearest M&S is closing in May. I will therefore have to order online if I want any of their products. Last pair of trousers I bought were petit size. I never have had to buy petite from them before they changed the leg lengths. I will find it very inconvenient when the store closes.

GrannySomerset Wed 17-Apr-24 18:51:04

I am glad to read that M&S trouser lengths have changed because I was beginning to think my legs had got shorter as well as my spine contracting!

Tenko Wed 17-Apr-24 18:59:14

I don’t have a problem with M&S online or returns as I collect or return at a local food hall . So easy .
Regarding sizing I always check the reviews which give you an idea if they come up big or small .
I agree on the leg length. I’m 5’2 and have always worn the short length but now they’re a bit long , unless I’ve shrunk

Gin Wed 17-Apr-24 21:11:17

I returned two items both would have fitted someone two sizes larger than me. A friend said that they have changed sizing so that we feel better buying a 14 not a 16. How true this is I am unsure.
I bought two pairs of jeggins in different colours and the leg length was different. I am 5’1” so now go to Next and find there petit range fits me.

I don't love on-line shopping but find it difficult to get around a large shopping centre now, so find that online shopping is very convenient.

Although I live close enough to a huge M&S store, I often order on line and pick up my purchases from the store so that I don't have to traipse around looking for what I want. At the same time, I can also do some food shopping which would not be possible on line.

NotSpaghetti Thu 18-Apr-24 00:58:49

I like shopping online to be honest as I like odd and quirky things - but far too many websites don't seem to understand how necessary good filters are!

That said, I have been trying to find a wall light today, have been to 5 "real" shops and still not had all the sizing info required to make a sensible purchase.

Exactly this!

I find M&S shopping on line far too easy. blush

I went into the store yesterday to buy another 2 pairs of trousers same size and length that I had bought last year. The sizing was way out:
One pair far too long
Another pair far too big around the waist.
When I told the assistant in the changing room she didn’t seem interested. Surely customer complaints should be fed back to the quality controllers or maybe they don’t exist anymore?
I also bought 2 T-shirts in my usual size but unfortunately didn’t try them on. They are massive.
What’s going on?

glammagran Thu 18-Apr-24 08:16:37

I agree entirely about how disparate clothes sizes can be. It’s. Not just M&S though. I’ve given up with Roman for the same reason. With M&S I can get size 12 that fits or size 16 but usually 14. It’s very annoying as I live nearly an hour away from a town with decent shops. I prefer M&S as they don’t charge for deliveries or returns. Some retailers charge for both.

glammagran Thu 18-Apr-24 08:23:01

Here’s an example. The T-shirt on top is size 16. Fitted fine. The one underneath is size 14. Huge. I sent the photo and email to M&S but didn’t get a reply.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 18-Apr-24 08:47:29

I think some of the sizing issues are more to do with the style and cut of the garments.

M & S have numerous styles of T-Shirts from fitted, slub, relaxed etc, the same with trouser lengths different styles are designed to finish at different points. Boot cut will cover your footwear whereas skinny/tight fit will finish above footwear.

Curlywhirly Thu 18-Apr-24 08:54:07

Regarding the recent change in trouser leg length - my 5'8" friend has just been in M and S looking for black trousers and said that the regular length were now too long and she had to get the short length!

Sparklefizz Thu 18-Apr-24 08:57:32

I bought some jeans in M&S yesterday and I am now in the short length instead of regular .... and even the short ones are quite long.

But M&S sizing has been bonkers for years. Most things are huge !
