Online retail gone wrong

Somebody needs to give the directors of M&S a good talking to.
Many of us have shopped there for years for underwear, clothing and food. They have now have now gone ‘up-to-date’ online but just can’t get it right. If you search for clothing by size or colour it ignores the fact that many of the items it offers are not in stock in your size or colour. So frustrating when there are thousands of items to look at, and many, if not most, are just not available to you. Other online retailers can do this, so why not M&S?
When items arrive they are, more often than not, wrongly sized. I have just ordered an attractive jumper in my size and when it arrived it would fit someone 3 or 4 sizes larger - no, not just a loose fit just blooming enormous! A second item was also badly sized.
I have just tried to return these items to M&S and even that is fraught with bugs.
I put in the return online but then when I got to the ‘print return label’ option it didn’t function. I eventually managed to print it from my phone. I had also received an email which stated I should show the QR code below at my post office, the QR code was not visible on the email.
By the way, I was an IT professional and therefore probably better online that most of my generation.
I have had enough! I won’t be shopping online at M&S any more. How many other customers have they lost the same way?

Callistemon I think the problem with payment at Boots is that you can’t do part payment in points, it’s all or nothing.

Yes, I emailed them.
They have no plans to change apparently.

I think their on line site needs updating as I used to sent £50 of clothes to my granddaughter when there was a sale as this limit gives free postage . After spending about 30 mins choosing I then go to pay to find 2-3 items out of stock so I have to go back and re choose but difficult as some items I have bought to colour coordinate so I have to zap the whole outfit . This does need serious attention as they have lost me as a £50 min shopper .

I bought from M&S online once and never again. The cardigan I ordered I loved but the security tab had been on it at some point and after wearing a couple of times a hole appeared in the shoulder . Contacted customer service to ask if I could return it to an M&S food store no problem. When I got there they asked if I had a reference code but CS hadn't given me one. A couple of days later M&S acknowledged they had the item by email. Luckily I kept it as I was told, when no refund appeared, they hadn't received it. Cue a whole lot of back and forth and the CS adviser was really quite rude and offhand ie it wasn't their fault as I should have had a ref code. Eventually received my refund and swore I would never shop at M&S again. That was 2 years ago and I haven't shopped there since. Appalling customer service.

M&S are getting worse online and instore. My preferred jeans have risen in price from £19.50 to £25 in 2 years. The latest price hike stated new and improved which means shorter zip and leg length!!! Thankfully I have found a replacement in Matalan and £10 a pair cheaper. The other online shop that is a nightmare is Debenhams, I will no longer be ordering from them.

I shop on line with J D Williams , well Ambrose Wilson , they deliver very quickly and most clothing is a good fit ; oversize sweaters I avoid as they are usually about a size 20 !
Ihave problems with M & S sizing particularly their denim , tight on the waist and baggy on the thighs.

I gave up shopping M&S sale online - you would get excited about a product and a good price and it would be available in a size 6 or 22! The search, as you say, didn’t prevent this.

I dearly love M&S but I do get angry.

Two identical pairs of trousers - one in my normal size - very snug, the other a whole size smaller - but abnormally huge.

Two new identical skirts (to replace two identical that were ripped due to age) - new skirts a full 2” narrower on the waist measured against the older skirts of same size. (and larger size now out of stock)…

And the stores leave me angry - there seems to have been a decision - not a single item in my size stocked on the entire shop-floor (I’m not exaggerating - there are literally no items stocked in my size, not one). So I can look at items - but not try for fit, nor make any purchases.

Then the mirrors, not enough on the shopfloor, and the mirrors where they are available have a grey tint - so you can’t see the item’s true or daylight colours.

There seem to be endless uni graduates possibly on work experience in my nearest branch - they seem to have free reign to constantly change the store layout - literally every time I go in. So lingerie last week is menswear this week. It’s an endless ongoing rotation of departments that never stops. Am I the only one who likes to have a mental map - to know where I am heading to find what I want. (They are invariably also standing in a group of 3 nattering….)

I’m fiercely loyal to the M&S brand - when I was a small child my parents made me promise not to smoke when I was older - and in return they would reward me with £100 at age 18. It was an unfathomable fortune and I spent my whole childhood dreaming of all the Barbie and Sindy dolls that I would be able to buy…. At age 18 they doubled it to £200, and as I had moved on from dolls - I invested in M&S shares instead.

With all my grumbling though, I do highly rate their zip up swimwear, superbly structured, easy to get into, flattering and supremely functional for dynamic swimming. I can only laugh at myself though as mine regularly becomes unzipped right to the waist, at least once during every swim session - sometimes it goes unnoticed, other times not 😊

Oh, I was just going to go and try to do an online M&S shop ....

Boots online is terrible too!

Callistemon21 I agree with you about Boots online.

I did manage to do one, Bessieb but did not follow the link to a special offer, and couldn't use my Advantage points in part payment.

I find that when I do go into a Marks and Spencer store and see something I like they do not have it in my size so when I ask if they have my size in their store room they tell me no, and to go online. I get home, go online, order my size and colour and when it is delivered it is marked with my size but it can fit someone much larger or much smaller than me. Trousers are a nightmare, I order long but they send short even though they are marked long. It is the same when I do see a pair of trousers in the store in a size 14, I have to take a size 12 and a size 16 just in case the one pair marked size 14 does not fit. Their sizing is horrendous.

I’ve morphed from regular to short jeans in M& S and now teetering on extra short 😮

Me too!

Purplepixie Sat 20-Apr-24 11:38:20

I don’t have a problem with them.

Meme60 Sat 20-Apr-24 11:37:20

I haven’t really had any problems with M&S and do quite a bit of online shopping with them. I do agree that some of the sizing is not true to size though.
As for Boots they are terrible if you dare return anything! I bought quite a few bits online including an expensive conditioner which was damaged and seeping out. I returned it to a shop and was told I couldn’t swap it. Had to get a credit to my card (which incidentally the wrong amount credited in Boots favour) and had to buy the conditioner again. This is all because Boots online and Boots are two different companies. I will certainly be hesitant to buy online again with Boots. IMO Boots is very shortsighted and must be loosing lots of customers through this clunky system

Buttonjugs Sat 20-Apr-24 11:32:40

I’ve never had a problem with it. And I usually use Klarna because I am poor.

sunglow12 Sat 20-Apr-24 11:27:29

Don’t bother with M and S since they deserted our city centre for a rather inaccessible out of town shop .

4VivGreen Sat 20-Apr-24 11:23:49

I received an expensive jumper that I had ordered from M&S on-line. I order on-line because my local M&S has closed, and I have mobility problems currently. The jumper came with a security tool attached that needs a tool to remove it. I travelled to a Simply Food that we have, but they didn’t have a tool. This was the advice I got from customer services. No apology or acknowledgment of the inconvenience. Time has passed and I am not sure I can sort this in time for a holiday. I will have to incur expense. What struck me, is nobody cared or advised me thoughtfully. M&S is unrecognisable, just when “trust” is at a real premium.

Gwan1 Sat 20-Apr-24 11:21:50

I too won't buy on line with M&S again.I ordered joggers one black one navy and the black ones are an inch shorter. I have removed label as I assumed they would be the same, silly me! I shall go in store and always try on from now.

I have shrunk an inch down to 5'4" - will that become extra short?

My medical records show that I have shrunk by one inch in the last 19 years to 5’ 1”. You might get way with being short 😀 unless M&S decide to hack off more fabric!

Regarding the recent change in trouser leg length - my 5'8" friend has just been in M and S looking for black trousers and said that the regular length were now too long and she had to get the short length!

Yes, me too although my old regular length trousers are still a perfect length - exactly the same as the new short!

I don't want to be short ☹

henetha Thu 18-Apr-24 10:10:34

I bought two summer t-shirts online from M&S last week and they arrived promptly and are lovely.

Sparklefizz Thu 18-Apr-24 08:57:32

I bought some jeans in M&S yesterday and I am now in the short length instead of regular .... and even the short ones are quite long.

But M&S sizing has been bonkers for years. Most things are huge !
