Just a quick question:

My neighbours and their friends are openly sitting and smoking cannabis outside their house.
Their children playing out (we live in a very small cul-de-sac).
Friends will then drive away.

Should I do anything and if so what?

My 86 year old father regularly smokes hashish. When he used to babysit his grandson in the 90's he would have a bath, close the door and have a spliff in the tub!

I doubt that the police would do anything. On my small estate people openly smoke it, l can smell it as l walk my dog.
My previous neighbour smoked it outside and had 2 small children, they were a lovely couple though and the children were well taken care of.
I know it's personal opinion but l just dont like it at all but l would never report anyone either.

I feel for you I can’t stand the stench it makes my stomach churn but it’s everywhere now thank god we don’t live near any neighbours that smoke it. Loud music I can put up with alcohol to a point but not weed

Loume Wed 01-May-24 14:43:26

Nothing, it is their business and not yours!
It's wisely used and should be legalised. Now that's for another thread!

Not acceptable to me. Interesting that you think such a foul smelling substance. Cannabis can affect your mental health, especially if you take a lot. Smoking with tobacco increases risk from both drugs. Driving when stoned or high can double your chances of having a serious, or even fatal car crash.

A 33yr old man moved into the one bed Housing Association flat below us (he was rehoused from a hostel). The first weekend the skunk smell was unbelievable. We went and knocked on his door as the smell was infiltrating our flat and every room was affected. He came to his front door and literally his eyes were all over the place - he couldn't even focus as he was off his head from skunk.

We complained to the Housing Association as we were not prepared to tolerate that having lived in our flat for 40+ years and never encountered anything like it. In their tenancy agreement it states quite clearly that anti social behaviour such as drug taking will result in eviction. We were told by the HA it was a 'police matter' and they wouldn't do anything. Well we all know that the police will not do anything - just turn a line eye.

It is worrying that smoking cannabis can result and add to people's mental health problems. So many of the knife attacks and stabbings that are now happening are fuelled by the perpetrator smoking cannabis. So I'm afraid I do not hold with those that say 'mind your own business, don't get involved' - really? Why should we inhale that disgusting stench from people who don't give a toss about the effect its having on their neighbours. I worry when my grandchildren visit - they should not be exposed to skunk fumes. So I will get involved to protect my family's health thank you. It is a complete nonsense that smoking cannabis is illegal (even in your own home actually). We have police just turning a blind eye and social landlords too gutless to do anything about it but would rather hide behind the police by saying it's their problem!

However you keep your pushbike in the communal hallway and they're up in arms threatening to confiscate said bike because it's a health & safety issue. Well so is breathing in someone else's skunk fumes! However the bike issue is a soft target to come down on and of course dealing with cannabis smoking involves much harder work.

I totally sympathise with you. I find cannabis smoke extremely offensive and have a very dim view of those that drive under the influence. I work for an ambulance service and have seen first hand the carnage the use of this drug can lead to. Without exception I smell cannabis every time I venture out - people smoke it openly and even whilst driving. It seems it is socially accepted these days and doesn’t have the bad press that drink driving attracts, but in my view it’s just as harmful. To drive under the influence with children on board is criminal. I’m not sure what the answer is - As others have said reporting it could lead to neighbour issues and that wouldn’t be comfortable for you. Apologies for the absence of any advice but just wanted to say your concerns are valid and fingers crossed your neighbours bad behaviour ends.

It's * acceptable* now and extremely unlikely police will act. I've smelled it from my neighbours and often walking past someone on the street. Actually, it's quite a pleasant smell!

Growing0ldDisgracefully

I used to be live and let live, until we had a next door neighbour move in who continually smokes it - skunk I believe, which has a dreadful stink. We can't have windows or patio doors open in summer, and have to get in quickly through our front door because of the stench wafting out of his front door into our house, which faces ours, front doors being on the side of the house therefore facing.
He is the sole carer for 3 early secondary school age children, drives under the influence, is continually shouting at the kids. It is known that passive smoking of cannabis is harmful to the brain development of children. He is continually making dreadful retching coughing noises outside of his door, coughing up whatever the stuff does to his lungs, even in the early hours of the morning (he is of the belief that the stuff is medicinal and good for him,) waking me up. Other neighbours dislike him for his nasty habits as well. However if we were to report him to the police, in the unlikely event they investigate, he will know it was us who reported him.
Sorry for the rant but he makes our life a misery.

Yep I would be interfering if I lived next door, especially young children inhaling that shit! Smells of piss & cheap sweet lemonade, it’s a disgusting smell! My 80 yr old friend lives next door to pot heads, think it’s skunk they smoke, they wake her up in the Night with them both coughing up their lungs. Young lass has just had a baby (social services removed one child) yrs ago. When I have walk past when the door is opened, the air is hazy, so god knows what that child is breathing in

red1 Wed 01-May-24 13:15:28

would you complain if they were stuffing their face with ultra processed food?

Purplepixie Wed 01-May-24 13:11:42

Nothing.

Mt61 Wed 01-May-24 13:08:12

My cousin struggled to sell her big fancy house in lytham, every time she had a viewing, the people next door would be sat In the garden smoking cannabis- said smell was putting people off buying😩 you can smell it all over our town centre ( council have converted an office block into flats for the homeless) it makes me have sneezing fits depending on how strong it is 😩

LilyoftheValley Wed 01-May-24 12:55:38

Stand downwind and inhale!

DamaskRose Wed 01-May-24 12:46:10

It’s really none of my business what people do in the privacy of their own homes. I’ve never smoked cannabis and can’t remember, from being parties, what it smells like but am willing to believe that it isn’t pleasant. My concern would driving while under the influence. Could you alert the police anonymously? Not nice to be at odds with near neighbours.

Nannashirlz Wed 01-May-24 12:42:46

Unfortunately not a lot you can do about it. In my last home a young lad moved in below me him and friends smoked the stuff regularly i thought they was a problem with my pipes when he first moved in. It was the workmen who told me what it was. I felt a right idiot lol i couldn’t open windows the smell would come through the floors i did report it to whoever would listen he turned into a nightmare neighbor blasting music 24/7 with friends i ended up doing diary after diary and he would get letters to stop he did for a week or so then start again after 3yrs of nothing changing I moved into my lovely bungalow no weed smoking here complaining doesn’t work anymore

biglouis Wed 01-May-24 12:39:58

Personally, I believe that unless someone is hurting you or yours you leave them alone

Could not agree more. I keep people like neighbours at arms length. I dont have headspace for them. But if someone aggresses against me first there is no gaurantee that I will not respond by going nuclear.

NannaBarbra Wed 01-May-24 12:32:00

If the driver is under the influence then report that offence to the police, you don't need to involve your neighbours, they may put a marker on his car and pull him over for a roadside test away from your area
Cannabis can stay in your system for days and effect your ability to drive, if the drivers family are in the car he could crash, seriously injure them or worse, not to mention other innocent road users

Dee1012 Wed 01-May-24 12:20:31

I think smoking in their own property is one issue...that wouldn't really concern me but driving after taking drugs would.
In all honesty I'd be passing the registration number to the Police and if they choose to stop / test, that's up to them.

I attended a presentation some time ago - work related, in that, we were told that over 4% of fatal incidents could have been prevented if the driver hadn’t taken an illegal drug. That figure doesn't include accidents with no fatality.
I'd imagine that number is higher now.

Amalegra Wed 01-May-24 12:17:20

No one should be driving taking ANY drug and that includes cannabis and alcohol. Cannabis is a Class B drug while alcohol is perfectly legal. I find it very ironic that some experts in the field of addiction are agreed that should alcohol be new to the market today, it would probably be banned as a Class A drug! Food for thought indeed.

biglouis Wed 01-May-24 12:16:32

When I was an undergraduate I lived on one of the roughest estates in Manchester and neighbours smoking weed was something I got used to. Not personally - I have never smoked. However there is a class of people who like to sit outside on summer days and puff away. There is not a lot you can do about it otherwise than keep your door closed. Neither the police nor the local authority are going to do anything about it. As for contacting their LL (if its a rental). Dont bother. So long as the rent is being paid and the place is not being wrecked the LL will not care. Landlords will not become involved in personal disputes.

Cressy Wed 01-May-24 12:05:15

Just back from a weekend in London. The smell of weed seemed to be everywhere so police obviously not bothered. I would be very concerned though about the friends who visit if they are smoking and driving. Wonder what I would do if I suspected they were driving after drinking. 🤔🤫

Trottoir Wed 01-May-24 12:04:09

I'd let them get on with it

sazz1 Wed 01-May-24 11:57:20

Have lovely neighbours but they do smoke cannabis and I absolutely hate the smell. I've tried it many years ago but it gives me hallucinations so I don't touch it. Personally I think it should be legalised and controlled like in Amsterdam with coffee shops.
If you report your neighbours they may not be very happy about it if police take action.

Sherry1 Wed 01-May-24 11:55:48

Personally, I believe that unless someone is hurting you or yours you leave them alone.

undines Wed 01-May-24 11:55:30

Goodness! There are far, far worse things to endure and observe with neighbours! If the children are ok then I would never dream of saying anything. Arguably, cannabis is less harmful than alcohol, but who would complain if people were having a glass of wine or two? The driving off is the only concern, but personally I would need more reason than that to dob someone in. You risk creating a bad atmosphere and being a target. Why not sashay over, ask if you can share a spliffie and then, if you think someone is driving while stoned you could gently say 'Are you sure you're safe to drive?' :-))
