Just a quick question:

My neighbours and their friends are openly sitting and smoking cannabis outside their house.
Their children playing out (we live in a very small cul-de-sac).
Friends will then drive away.

Should I do anything and if so what?

Jane71 Mon 29-Apr-24 16:38:25

No. Whether they smoke cannabis or not is nothing to do with you.

Ladyleftfieldlover Mon 29-Apr-24 16:41:50

Nothing.

Judy54 Mon 29-Apr-24 16:45:16

It is a a difficult one. Some neighbours may smoke cigarettes outside their homes or drink to excess and make lots of noise. It depends how often they do it and how long it goes on for. No I would not like it but not sure what if anything I could do.

OurKid1 Mon 29-Apr-24 16:49:13

Your only option is to report them for smoking cannabis, but I don't think the Police would take any notice. In any case, would it really be worth it - assuming you don't want to make enemies of them. Personally I'd leave things as they are. They're not hurting anyone, are they? Live and let live I'd say.

I wouldn’t like it. Is cannabis legal here ?

Iam64 Mon 29-Apr-24 16:55:01

I think the main concern here is drug driving. If the driver abstains and the children are happy and cared for - no problem.
Driving under the influence - problem

MissAdventure Mon 29-Apr-24 16:55:40

It's not legal, but some police forces will do nothing.
Some may confiscate it, and that's it, and very few would see it as a big deal.

Iam64 Mon 29-Apr-24 16:57:39

Unless it’s in the driver MissA - that could be a problem

pascal30 Mon 29-Apr-24 16:58:55

I really wouldn't say anything. Cannabis use is very common especially on the street where I live and although it is illegal and the police are unlikely to do anything as it is a class B drug...

pascal30 Mon 29-Apr-24 17:00:05

that should say streets in the town, not specifically my street

Callistemon21 Mon 29-Apr-24 17:04:32

Whether anyone thinks it's ok or not, it is illegal to drive if you are over the limit of cannabis (or any illegal drugs or alcohol) in the UK.

I couldn't remember the limit but just checked and for cannabis is it is 2µg/L.

If they weren't driving then that is their business.

Ali23 Mon 29-Apr-24 17:05:17

It’s the drug driving that bothers me the most. Also smoking it around the children.
I think I would report it if I saw that the driver was under the influence, with the car registration. Not a comfortable thing to do though.

Callistemon21 Mon 29-Apr-24 17:05:53

They're not hurting anyone, are they? Live and let live I'd say

Unless they are driving and have an accident or knock down a pedestrian.

Could be one of your family they hit.

MissAdventure Mon 29-Apr-24 17:08:02

Yes, the driving is obviously an issue.
Apart from that, I'd sooner put up with the smell of weed than watch people glugging back alcohol.

Esmay Mon 29-Apr-24 17:09:50

It's a class B drug in the UK so it's illegal to possess or supply it .
A first offence would be let off with a warning and the next offence might be punished with up to three months in prison or a fine of up to £2,500 .
This increases with further offences .
However , cannabis is so widely smoked that I wonder if the Police would investigate and prosecute .
If your neighbours are involved with crime then , the Police would certainly be interested in investigating them .

But you have to live next door to them in a small cul-de-sac : it wouldn't take much imagination to pinpoint you as the whistle - blower .
Not being spoken to is one thing and being the object of gossip is
another and there's a risk of enduring a campaign against you .
I haven't experienced those things , but I know people , who have .

Be pleasant and friendly , have a glass of wine with them and ignore it !

MissAdventure Mon 29-Apr-24 17:14:19

I read recently that one police force have effectively decriminalised weed.
Maybe Derby.

Just basically saying "we arent going to do anything much if we find you in possession of a small bit of weed".

petra Mon 29-Apr-24 17:21:45

So you were close enough to see that the driver was actually smoking a joint and not a cannabis free roll up.

tanith Mon 29-Apr-24 17:26:50

A family member has this problem but the smell and smoke is infiltrating his property especially his small daughters room. He’s asked the neighbours to be more mindful to no avail so he’s now reported to the council and was asked to keep a diary. The neighbour has already had a warning and presumably is aware who is complaining.

Callistemon21 Mon 29-Apr-24 17:28:19

Alcohol is not illegal but you should not drive when you've drunk over the limit of that either.

There are many drivers on the roads who are probably over the drug limit.
The penalties range from a 12 month driving ban, a fine to six months in prison

Primrose53 Mon 29-Apr-24 17:45:15

Callistemon21 I bet there are thousands driving around on prescription medication who should not be behind a steering wheel never mind illegal drugs.

Iam64 Mon 29-Apr-24 18:20:08

Prescription meds carry warnings. If people know their reactions are impaired by prescription or street drugs, or alcohol, they shouldn’t drive.
Simple

I agree with this advice.

I have it either side of my house and in the flat above the shop I work in 🤣I don’t need to buy or smoke any myself
It’s so commonplace now the police wouldn’t do anything else all day if they were to deal with joint smokers

None of your business, interfere at your peril.
