Neighbours

Just a quick question:

My neighbours and their friends are openly sitting and smoking cannabis outside their house.
Their children playing out (we live in a very small cul-de-sac).
Friends will then drive away.

Should I do anything and if so what?

With young children around, I think it's wrong!!!
That's my input.
Oh, and it stinks!

You can't change your neighbors' friend's habits even if they smoke and drive.

Neighbours can be a bl***y nuisance but you have to pick your battles. If they are sitting in/outside their own property and not making excessive noise late at night then you are best to close your door and ignore them. The time to worry is when they are indulging in "anti social activities" such as dealing or giving loud parties which disturn the community.

Most of my neighbours belong to a different ethnic community and keep to themselves. Im quite happy with that as Im not into neighbouring. Occasionally there is a noisy wedding (with lots of drumming) because thats what people around here do but I just stick in ear plugs.

I believe there are different varieties and strengths and some posters on here have remarked on it being a sweet herbal smell and other people shouldn't object. However that doesn't apply to all of it, and skunk smells like sewage. So no, it's not acceptable to have that stench permeating other people's homes.

Well said Gillespie I totally agree with you.why should other people have to put up with the stench. Also it definitely has an effect on mental health.

At the risk of going on - my concern isn’t the smoking, it’s the driving.
Three serious accidents near me recently - drug and drink/combination, every time

The police don’t do anything about it round here. 🤷‍♀️

If you reported this in Southend ( where I live) they’d think you were stoned 😂

I have only smelled it once and had to ask what it was. Horrible. I am grateful that I don’t have neighbours who do this. What an example they are setting for their children. The police won’t do anything but if it’s a rental property the landlord might, on the grounds that they are causing a nuisance.

nadateturbe Thu 02-May-24 17:19:55

Feel sorry for the children. If I thought it was affecting them in any way I would report it to SS.

Gillycats Thu 02-May-24 17:15:22

It’s the worst smell, makes me nauseous. But more importantly it is dangerous. If people want to smoke it then it should be indoors with the windows closed. If they want to risk terrible mental health problems fine, but they shouldn’t endanger the health of others.

ElaineI Thu 02-May-24 16:57:23

It is illegal and like cigarettes not supposed to be smoked around young children. I had never smelt it but when I finally did I now notice it everywhere. Sadly you can't unsmell it!

If its not affecting you then really it's none of your business. So what if they smoke it. My neighbours do and they are the loveliest people going.

Desdemona Thu 02-May-24 09:03:19

I hate the skunky/foxy reek of cannabis - everywhere by me smells of it - people, shops, streets - its vile.

As others have said, its unlikely you can do much unless someone is driving under the influence, in which case contact the police in the hope a random check can be done.

jocork Thu 02-May-24 08:46:34

Falling out with neighbours is horrible so I'd be very wary of reporting unless you suspect driving under the influence and would do it anonymously. Thankfully I've not had this problem where I live but noticed the smell in parts of the town when I did the census in 2021.
We fell out with some neighbours at our last home and were planning to move to get away from the abuse that we and our children were experiencing. In the end my ex was made redundant so we relocated due to his new job. We were very careful when buying a new home to avoid the things that had caused the rift. I've had great neighbours here.
Unfortunately the police are overstretched everywhere so unless there is dangerouse driving they are unlikely to take any action.

What a horrid household that smells the worst

UsaBrit Wed 01-May-24 19:32:31

I'm so sorry you have to endure that.people just do not care other than for themselves. Dangerous driving under influence also.

Would definitely have concerns on seeing anyone driving off afrer smoking cannabis. The visitors may even be taking the drug to your neighbours which could be classed as dealing. Just because a lot of people do it doesn't make it right comes to mind. A report to police can be anonymous, a warning may be enough to lessen the open air drug use.

Open air smoking is much better that in a house, especially one where children live

Seakay Wed 01-May-24 19:24:04

If the driver is smoking take the car reg and phone in to report peculiar driving - eg doing 25 in a 40 zone and steering seems erratic - the family's children are nowhere near the smoking, the house where they live doesn't contain the smoke, unless someone is driving under the influence I'd leave the address out of it.

I find the smell disgusting it makes me fell nauseous. I was in our back garden this afternoon to help my DH erect a new gazebo and got a whiff of cannabis, not sure which house it was coming from. There is an apartment block to the side of our back garden, which when we moved here 33years ago was resticted to retired residents, but once the council started to sell housing to residents that changed, as many families sold the flats to buy to let landlords when the original resident died. Since then the quality of tenant can only be described as riff raff. There is problems with noise, anti social behaviour one resident was identified as an abuser of children and the smell of cannabis is overwhelming in the summer

I don't understand this apparent tolerance of cannabis, which is illegal and as dangerous as alcohol to a driver, yet the immediate hysteria if a person lights a tobacco cigarette in their back garden.

would you complain if they were stuffing their face with ultra processed food?

Oh, would that make someone over the legal limit for driving?
I didn't know.

The only person who might be affected if someone eats junk/ultra processed food is themselves.
