To Think That As We Age ...

AIBU to think that as we age we get bored with clothes etc., due to having seen it all before? I'm currently looking for a dress to wear as a guest at a wedding in August. Granted I'm a bit of a chubster, so choices are more limited, but I have yet to see anything that I've thought, 'oh wow, that's lovely'. Everything seems to be drab, or frumpy in my opinion, but is it just me? Is it because over the years I've seen so many styles and fashions come and go, in all the colours of the rainbow, and have just become bored with them? Or is it because I'm fat, and clothes just don't look as good on me as they used to? If anyone knows of any websites that sell NICE, brightly coloured dresses, for plus sizes, other than the normal ones, like 'Yours', 'Simply Be', 'Evans', etc. which I've already perused to death, then please let me know. I'm looking for a size 20/22 if that helps.

Are you anywhere near a John Lewis shop? The personal shopping assistants are great. The appointment with a stylist is free and takes a whole load of stress out choosing the right outfit for a wedding.

Why do people think that weddings require new clothes?

Even when I was mother of the groom, I wore something for a special occasion that I had bought a year or two before and worn only a couple of times. new top and shoes and a bit of braid. Had I ever been mother of the bride, I would have acted no differently.

Because it’s fun to try and choose new things if you enjoy clothes? There’s nothing nicer than a new outfit that really suits you and you feel good in. I know that’s not the case for everybody, but it’s how I feel anyway.

I didn't have anything that was suitable for a mother of the bride nor of the groom.

I did think the other day, as the weather got warmer, that I should throw out all but a few pieces of clothing I actually like and a few which are comfortable to wear at home.

Then I panic because I don't see anything I particularly like in the shops/online at the moment except more of the same that I'd be throwing out.
I need help!

Scarlett and Jo online have some beautiful dresses made for larger ladies. A couple of years ago I bought a lovely long dress for my daughters wedding. It has a very clever banding under the bust then floats out hiding bumps and tum. Reasonably priced too about £80

I second the recommendation for Scarlett and Jo. Lovely dresses made for the larger ladies. Very flattering style.

The only problem I have with them is that their midi length is maxi on me because I’m only 5’ 1”. Well worth a look though.

It’s the footwear I have trouble with. Since I had plantar fasciitis, and later broke a toe, I stick with flat, supportive shoes, with socks( and trousers) . But last year white trainers came in, so I was able to wear them with dresses. But not for a wedding. I’d have to find some sandals,I suppose.

Try Popsy they have plenty of bright dresses

It is harder to look nice the larger you are, unless you’re super confident with a good eye for things that suit you in which case you can look stunning.

How about a bright multi coloured longish tunic with white leggings and a huge fascinator?

I hope I never get bored with clothes (bags, shoes or handbags)

Gudrun goes up to size 22/24 - and they have some lovely colourful and different/unusual dresses etc.

White stuff have lots of bright and cheerful clothes. Not sure how big their sizes go though.

Some of White Stuff go up to a size 24.

I love their clothes. Good quality.

I've always been bored with clothing. Waste of my limited resources.

I wear jeans (or black trousers if I must) and white tops. Sorted! However, that won't sort a wedding. Perhaps shop your closet. I always wear the same silk shifts with jackets to weddings, have as long as I can remember. Good clothing never wears out, I imagine you have something lurking...

Gudrun Sjoden is good for colours and larger sizes

Yes, if you are "their" shape. My daughter loves these!

Roman originals and Klass both have nice colourful clothes in the sizes you are looking for. They are my usual go to it I am looking for something nice to wear and I am a similar size to you. Also do you have any independent boutiques in your area? They often have items that a different and their sizes don't always stop at a 16 . The Italian collection are usually free size range and go up your size.
I have bought from Seasalt but find their colours a bit subdued tbh and not really wedding type clothes

Something popped up on my phone the other day. It was a Vanessa Feltz range of clothing. I had a look. Some of the things are lovely. I think it's 4love.co.uk.

My mum, for my Daughters wedding bought her whole outfit from "Box2" she was a size 22 and only about 5"2", 86years at the time .
She went for it, she bought x2 dresses handbag, necklace.
Her chosen dress for the day was a plain shift with a bright Tropical pattern full length, shiffon coat, she looked fabulous, check them out.

mumofmadboys Sun 12-May-24 16:13:14

Go and look in your wardrobe! You may find you already have a suitable dress you have not worn for a while. You can wear different accessories or a hat or a new hair do. It doesn't have to be a new outfit. Save time, angst, money and the planet all in one!

kittylester Sun 12-May-24 16:10:24

Er, what is a dress?

Smart trousers, special top and a fabulous handbag would be what I would go for.

Casdon Sun 12-May-24 16:05:40

I’d suggest looking on YouTube for some ideas OldHag, there are quite a few channels where plus sized ladies do clothes try ons, to get a good idea of what shapes work best. Helen Mary Jo is my favourite, I’ve linked her last occasion wear hall for you to have a look, to get a few ideas.

There are a lot of others, of all sizes and ages, but although I’m a different size I’ve pinched quite a few of her ideas as she is really good at putting things together.

i do not think I will ever be bored with clothes. However I am not a lavish spender on clothes and wear clothes, usually until they wear out. On occasions they will not wear out and they finally get dispatched to a charity shop.

I had a 'review my summer wardrobe' event last week, before the hot weather started, and then went and bought myself two short sleeved tops from TU, in Sainsbury's and dispatched a couple more items to the charity shop.

I do not face the shape challenges faced by the OP , but I have a wonderful dress, bought on impulse last summer, even though it is made from acetate, which I hate. It will see me through any special event from a family party, through weddings or even a Royal Garden party, were I to be invited, depending on how I accessorise it.

Just taken a break from packing (going to Spain with my son and his family). Bought some new clothes, shorts, tops etc. I look awful - with these skinny, eczema-scarred legs.😫 So decided I will buy a couple of cotton trousers tomorrow to hide my legs . I agree oldhag - I hate shopping for clothes because there’s nothing that will look nice on me. Oh to look like Joanna Lumley !!!!!
