To Think That As We Age ...

AIBU to think that as we age we get bored with clothes etc., due to having seen it all before? I'm currently looking for a dress to wear as a guest at a wedding in August. Granted I'm a bit of a chubster, so choices are more limited, but I have yet to see anything that I've thought, 'oh wow, that's lovely'. Everything seems to be drab, or frumpy in my opinion, but is it just me? Is it because over the years I've seen so many styles and fashions come and go, in all the colours of the rainbow, and have just become bored with them? Or is it because I'm fat, and clothes just don't look as good on me as they used to? If anyone knows of any websites that sell NICE, brightly coloured dresses, for plus sizes, other than the normal ones, like 'Yours', 'Simply Be', 'Evans', etc. which I've already perused to death, then please let me know. I'm looking for a size 20/22 if that helps.

Very rarely get a wedding invite, but if I did, it would not be looked on with pleasure by me, more of an endurance test!

Clothes buying gives me no pleasure, which is why I wear the same old stuff until it gives up the ghost!

Have you looked at Seasalt? You can look up their website or visit their shops if one is near to you. I find their things worth looking at. They are not cheap but do have offers at times and sales which I watch out for. They have a lot of cotton things which I prefer more than any manmade items. I wear trousers a lot and so have quite a variety of their T shirts which have a good colour range and wash well and I have a lot of striped ones in a variety of colours which I find very useful. They also have quite a lot of dresses skirts etc too. One extra plus thing is that if they do not have your size in the shop they will order it to deliver to the shop. You have to pay for it first but if it does not suit you get a refund with no problem. I hate sending things back etc and much prefer this as the nearest shop is quite local so can try on there and either take it or return it on the spot. Of course you can have things delivered direct to you but as I say I find it more of hassle to deal with. They are quite good at matching skirts or trousers and tops etc or things that go well with each other so that you can vary the combination. I go and have a mooch around when I feel like it - which isnt very often - and buy something I like as I find rather than having to sort out something for a specific occasion which can end up in a bit of a panic if you havent much time I am in my 70's and do not follow fashion , cant be bothered and couldnt afford to either . If I go to anything, I wear what I have that seems appropriate and comfortable. So long as I am clean, my hair washed and am in what I feel ok in , I am more likely to enjoy the occasion and relax. This way you can enjoy the wedding and as you are not the centre of attention , I am sure you will feel that you can blend in with the crowd and not be thinking about what you are wearing or how comfortable you are. I used to wear quite high heels in the past but now happy in the summer time to wear sandals and be comfortable. Also if you have some possibilities of an outfit do you have a friend with similar size who might be able to lend you something to match what you already have? Hope you have a happy time at the wedding.

White stuff have lots of bright and cheerful clothes. Not sure how big their sizes go though.

You’ve given your size but how tall are you ( it makes a difference.
What shoes do you plan on wearing.
What colours/ material do you like.

Just remembered something else I forgot to mention. I have done this for quite a few friends going to weddings. If the outfit you choose has a fabric belt that you dont intend to wear, I have bought a new straw hat from Oxfam and then take the belt and often a white ribbon or pick up another colour from the belt and plait them together and then put them round the hat with a bow at the back and trailing ribbons so that this of course matches your outfit specifically and no one else will be wearing the same. No belt ? Then a couple of ribbons again intertwined and put round the hat and either a single or a few small flowers put at the side can look very nice.

Have a look at Sahara.co.uk lots of linen and cotton styles.

Jaxjacky Sun 12-May-24 15:22:54

I haven’t worn a proper dress (long cool beach types excluded) for over five years, I wouldn’t know where to start, John Lewis perhaps?

Have you tried Curvissa? I have to buy Mother of the Bride (or in this case, mother of one bride haha!) outfit for September and just dread it!! Depending on your budget check this out www.sumissura.com/en-uk/women/women-suits/personalize

I’m not size but only 5ft 1, never ever ever dress up! Only ever wear sketchers!

Cossy Sun 12-May-24 15:27:48

Sorry, should read your size.

I am most definitely not bored with clothes but I am on the fat side and have narrow shoulders and a big bust so not easy to fit.

My saving grace is I'm not short at just over 5'7 so can "get away" with things.

I've worn Chesca outfits and Ann Balon to weddings... I have to be comfortable!

NotSpaghetti Sun 12-May-24 15:32:38

Both Chesca and Ann Balon are often on Vinted or Ebay BTW.

Just taken a break from packing (going to Spain with my son and his family). Bought some new clothes, shorts, tops etc. I look awful - with these skinny, eczema-scarred legs.😫 So decided I will buy a couple of cotton trousers tomorrow to hide my legs . I agree oldhag - I hate shopping for clothes because there’s nothing that will look nice on me. Oh to look like Joanna Lumley !!!!!

i do not think I will ever be bored with clothes. However I am not a lavish spender on clothes and wear clothes, usually until they wear out. On occasions they will not wear out and they finally get dispatched to a charity shop.

I had a 'review my summer wardrobe' event last week, before the hot weather started, and then went and bought myself two short sleeved tops from TU, in Sainsbury's and dispatched a couple more items to the charity shop.

I do not face the shape challenges faced by the OP , but I have a wonderful dress, bought on impulse last summer, even though it is made from acetate, which I hate. It will see me through any special event from a family party, through weddings or even a Royal Garden party, were I to be invited, depending on how I accessorise it.

I’d suggest looking on YouTube for some ideas OldHag, there are quite a few channels where plus sized ladies do clothes try ons, to get a good idea of what shapes work best. Helen Mary Jo is my favourite, I’ve linked her last occasion wear hall for you to have a look, to get a few ideas.

There are a lot of others, of all sizes and ages, but although I’m a different size I’ve pinched quite a few of her ideas as she is really good at putting things together.

Er, what is a dress?

Smart trousers, special top and a fabulous handbag would be what I would go for.

mumofmadboys Sun 12-May-24 16:13:14

Go and look in your wardrobe! You may find you already have a suitable dress you have not worn for a while. You can wear different accessories or a hat or a new hair do. It doesn't have to be a new outfit. Save time, angst, money and the planet all in one!

My mum, for my Daughters wedding bought her whole outfit from "Box2" she was a size 22 and only about 5"2", 86years at the time .
She went for it, she bought x2 dresses handbag, necklace.
Her chosen dress for the day was a plain shift with a bright Tropical pattern full length, shiffon coat, she looked fabulous, check them out.

Scarlett and Jo online have some beautiful dresses made for larger ladies. A couple of years ago I bought a lovely long dress for my daughters wedding. It has a very clever banding under the bust then floats out hiding bumps and tum. Reasonably priced too about £80

Gudrun Sjoden is good for colours and larger sizes

Kate1949 Sun 12-May-24 16:44:05

Something popped up on my phone the other day. It was a Vanessa Feltz range of clothing. I had a look. Some of the things are lovely. I think it's 4love.co.uk.

Roman originals and Klass both have nice colourful clothes in the sizes you are looking for. They are my usual go to it I am looking for something nice to wear and I am a similar size to you. Also do you have any independent boutiques in your area? They often have items that a different and their sizes don't always stop at a 16 . The Italian collection are usually free size range and go up your size.
I have bought from Seasalt but find their colours a bit subdued tbh and not really wedding type clothes

Yes, if you are "their" shape. My daughter loves these!

I've always been bored with clothing. Waste of my limited resources.

I wear jeans (or black trousers if I must) and white tops. Sorted! However, that won't sort a wedding. Perhaps shop your closet. I always wear the same silk shifts with jackets to weddings, have as long as I can remember. Good clothing never wears out, I imagine you have something lurking...
