I make all my own bread, it’s something I love doing, I find it cathartic, I also love the challenge with sourdough as unlike the ordinary brown loaves with sourdough you never quite know how it’s going to turn out!

However, it really annoys me when people leave their crusts, particularly adults!

Surely they cannot be that unpalatable?

How do you go through life not eating crusts?

I know IABU.

My mom always eat your crusts and you will get curly hair. It was straight until I was 38 and was on HRT for 16 years had a lovely wave in it . GP took of it and within a month straight hair.

There is nothing taster than toasted crust spread with butter and honey 😋 especially if it's sourdough.

If that's all you have to grumble about, lucky you.

My mother always used to tell me that old wives tale because I would never eat my crusts as a child.

I had a mop of curly hair. When I grew into my teens it suddenly became straight. However it was the 1960s by then and curly hair was unfashionable. My friends used to iron their hair to straighten it. That was before custom hair straighteners became common.

My gran made me eat crusts, and egg white in a boiled egg even though it made me sick so I don’t eat crusts unless it’s nice crusty bread and I don’t eat egg white. It’s a waste but as my husband used to say, “you paid for it it’s up to you if you eat it”

I like crusts, but a new crown is now £900 at my dentist , so I’m not risking anything too chewy.

Esmay

My hair is so curly that I can't brush it after washing I have to use a wide toothed comb .

A lot of swearing and squeaking goes on as I comb it out .

And I prefer crusts especially dipped in olive oil with a little garlic , a lot of spring onions and tomatoes .

Yum !

Same on the hair , it’s been unruly from go 1 used to give my dear mum , who was very straight haired , quite a lot of trouble

My hair is curly and always has been an and yer I’ve never been a fan of the crusts. I don’t enjoy the way they taste ? But If I’m a guest at someone’s home I’ll usually eat them anyway , out of politeness. If it’s especially hard though as sourdough tends to be I literally can’t chew them without jaw pain

With bought bread the birds get the crusts but when I make my own they are too good for them and we eat them. The currawongs and ravens and magpies have come to expect it and turn up at the back door.

I’ve just broken a tooth on a piece of crusty bread that I’d toasted, which made the crusts really quite hard. I shall be very careful with crusty crusts in future, toasted or not.
I love homemade bread though. My son makes lovely bread.

I've always eaten my crusts (best bit) but my hair couldn't be any straighter if it tried.

Dinahmo Sat 08-Jun-24 19:41:05

Just broken a tooth after eating some crusty bread.

Depends on the state of your teeth - some people have good reason to leave their crusts - or they could dunk them in their tea and suck at them.

Bellanonna Sat 08-Jun-24 19:36:56

I cut them off

Labradora Sat 08-Jun-24 19:21:33

I love my crusts , ma'am. They are rarely left on the plate !

Grammaretto Sat 08-Jun-24 18:52:20

I'm guilty nowadays of leaving hard crusts. I lost my 2 lower front teeth on a chewy baguette a couple of years ago.
Soft bread for me now. ☹️

dalrymple23 Sat 08-Jun-24 18:36:53

Crusts delicious - as long as it is the James Martin style of cookery with half a pack of butter on the crust!

Bellanonna Sat 08-Jun-24 18:28:31

I love that, GNW

I remember when my now teenage GC were about 5 and 3 they went through a phase of refusing to eat the crusts. I took them to visit my Dad one day along with a sandwich lunch to eat in his garden.

One the return car journey there was a serious accident ahead on the motorway and we ended up in a traffic jam for nearly 2 hours. 2 little voices from the back of the car eventually announced they were hungry. We opened the cool bag and the only food left were the crusts from their sandwiches. They shared them and declared they were the nicest crusts they’d ever tasted !

Picky buggers! The crusts are always the best bit.

I was a wee bit surprised to find my local supermarket selling bog standard white sliced bread with the crusts cut off.

That was it's Unique Selling Point - not for me!

Catterygirl Sat 08-Jun-24 15:28:00

I used to love crusty bread but with two bottom teeth falling out recently it’s impossible until I get my teeth fixed.

Hellogirl1 Sat 08-Jun-24 14:59:59

I think the best bit is the crust, especially at each end of the loaf. My kids used to fight over the crust, so my MIL started saving hers to bring here for them. I said to her "For heaven`s sake, don`t tell anyone on the bus that you`re taking crusts to your grandchildren! "LOL

I dont care for sourdough bread, but make a great wholemeal loaf and put poppyseeds and various other seeds on , so the crust is something that I enjoy the most. So if I had anyone daft enough not to enjoy it , I would happily cut the crust off and eat it myself!! - My best bread is made when I am furious about something - at the moment of course politicians etc., but anything that is frustrating , more bashing of the dough, with an internal thought of who I would like to imagine I was thumping. Safe for everyone and calming for me and end up with great bread!!

Caleo Sat 08-Jun-24 12:15:51

My son bakes sourdough flat bread for me which has not crusts, and can be refreshed by a quick sprinkle of water then the oven or toaster for a few seconds. I just eaten a warm slice of it with butter and marmalade.

He used to make loaves for me and it was a labour of love for me to eat some of the crusts.

Calendargirl Sat 08-Jun-24 12:14:09

I buy low GI loaves from our artisan baker.

The price has gone up to just over £3 a loaf.

Expensive, but it is very good bread.

At that price, none of it is wasted, certainly not the crusts.
