I make all my own bread, it’s something I love doing, I find it cathartic, I also love the challenge with sourdough as unlike the ordinary brown loaves with sourdough you never quite know how it’s going to turn out!

However, it really annoys me when people leave their crusts, particularly adults!

Surely they cannot be that unpalatable?

How do you go through life not eating crusts?

I know IABU.

It could be that some people have problems with their (false) teeth. I speak as one who knows, although I always try to eat my crusts!

I don’t eat sourdough bread because I have sore gums from medication I have to take. My husband has dementia and is sure that crusts make his teeth fall out! It does annoy me when I go into a cafe and ask for toast and can only get sourdough bread. I do eat the crusts from the granary bread from our lovely local bakery. I use the crusts from my husband’s bread to make croutons by freezing them and make a job lot to put in his soup. Is that called ‘recycling’! 🤪

I wish I could eat the crust off the bread. My dentures will not let me do it though so I cut off the crust, pop it into a plastic bag and have it later when I smother the crust in butter and dip it into hot soup. Delicious.

DH makes our bread but I always eat the crusts and they're the best bit.

Woo hoo! First state pension received today. Only 6 years late as Im a Waspi!
Now what to spend it on to mark this momentous occasion!!

Curtaintwitcher Thu 20-Jun-24 06:39:13

If royalty can have their crusts cut off so can the rest of us!

LaCrepescule Thu 20-Jun-24 06:34:59

You aren’t. I love crusts but they have to be loaded with creamy unsalted butter!

Sure, some crusts can be too tough. BUT -- don't waste them, chop them up, put them out for birds.

I’m another who loves crusts, toasted or otherwise. Lovely dunked in soup as some others have suggested but I really like crunchy foods.

When I was wee, my Dad would have a proper Forfar Bridie for Saturday lunch and he left the crust. I was always around to clean that up!

On a similar note I always eat all of a baked potato, loving the crispy skins.

I can understand though that teeth and gum issues prevent some from eating these crispy, chewy delights. And thank goodness the few I have left are strong enough.

Crusts are the bestbit and we share the crusts from the ends of the bread , one each, when I ( my breadmaker) bake it.

I love fresh bread crusts, however I can’t eat them anymore due to a combination of diabetes and partial dentures, you just never know what people have to contend with in their lives (I personally wouldn’t discuss my ‘short comings’ with anyone even friends)

My two big front teeth are brittle and thin - the dentist builds them up from the back or they'd be scalloped grin - and he told me not to eat sourdough crusts! Especially toasted. So I don't. smile

Oh dear…you wouldn’t like me then…I don’t like Sourdough bread. …sorry.

Best part, like fighting my brother for the top of the hard honey,
I have curly hair too !

Growing0ldDisgracefully Wed 19-Jun-24 14:09:42

Used to love the crust on bread but since the progression to dentures, I struggle even with the centre of bread, let alone the crusts so sadly bread has joined the growing list of things I can't eat anymore.
And I have to confess to not liking sourdough - far too hard for me even pre-dentures.

Same here. I have spent a small fortune on dental implants and do not want to risk breaking any more teeth.

I have bucked the trend - I always eat my crusts and have straight hair! I think it’s bad manners to leave the crusts.

I’m the same. I think the crusts are the best bit. Even more surprising considering that my dad used to claim that eating the crusts would give you a hairy chest. Enough to put any little girl off. Thankfully, despite my love of crusts, my chest is as bald as it has always been.

Georgesgran Wed 19-Jun-24 12:13:09

I avoid crusts - just don’t like them - on any bread. Things like baguettes are a no-no for me.

Not to de-rail the thread, but my Mum (and Gran) used to cut the ends off chips, so I didn’t scratch my throat!! Perhaps they hoped I’d be a singer - believe me, I’m not, tone deaf am I.

Dizzyribs Wed 19-Jun-24 12:07:51

I have curly hair which I hate. It is still curly in spite of avoiding crusts for over 65 years. They lied!
Seriously though, I find crusts dry chewy and hard to swallow. And I was put off as a child by the copious amount of butter my mother insisted I put on and ate- I really don’t like butter.

Mariew1 Wed 19-Jun-24 12:02:08

You can dunk the crusts in your tea. Yummy!

Philippa111 Wed 19-Jun-24 11:57:12

Yes strong teeth needed for strong crusts. I do eat them...slowly. A thing that I don't understand is people who never finish a meal but always leave something on the plate. It's not that they are full as they always have room for cake and coffee afterwards.

knspol

Always leave the crusts on sourdough bread as they hurt my gums and occasionally makes them bleed. Would not do this in someone else's home I would eat and suffer but at home or in a restaurant I would leave them.

I find the same knspol. A branch of a fashionable London bakery has opened nearby recently and I won't be a customer! Even their cakes and pastries are rather "worthy", not enough sugar or fat in them so really not very nice to eat.

My granddaughter loves crusts and her brother doesn't, so when they have soldiers with their eggs she has the outside pieces. Works very well for pizza too!

leeds22 Wed 19-Jun-24 11:40:39

I used to tell my mother I didn't want curly hair. It turned out wavy, presumably because I only ate half my crusts.

candice1804 Wed 19-Jun-24 11:40:21

I always ate my crusts but unfortunately my hair could not be more straight than it is. I wanted curly hair. I paid a fortune in perms over many years.
