Anti social behaviour at gigs

We went to see The Pet Shop Boys this week, must admit they were amazing, as good as when they started 42 years ago. We paid almost £300 for 2 seated tickets. Within minutes of the show starting a young couple (probably about late 20s) got up and started dancing in the aisle almost knocking our drinks over. More concerning they were sitting/standing/dancing/jumping next to a lady attending the event alone who I guess was in her early 70s and appeared to have some mobility issues. They were bumping into her, spilling drinks. One of the security guys immediately spoke to them, I won't go into detail but the gestures and language to him weren't pleasant. This went on and on and the young lady seemed to enjoy annoying the security guy. About an hour into the performance about 5 or 6 more security arrived and arguments started, right in front of us. I spoke to a guy who appeared to be in charge, explained we'd paid nearly £300 and how their behaviour (especially to the lady sat next to them) was unacceptable). They were told to return to their seats, within minutes drinks were spilt over the lady in front of them, at that point 3 security frog marched the guy out and the lady followed, while taking a video on her phone and complaining loudly.
I love live music, theatre, musicals , we have tickets for Stevie Nicks next month but I think sadly that will be our last 😢
Last year we went to Birmingham to see Hollywood vampires and a lady was sitting in my VIP seat, refusing to move, so security had to be called.
Tickets for live music aren't cheap, so sad some people can't drink sensibly and enjoy the music

I’m sure you realise that with a live large arena concert 🎶 people are free to come & go - they like you will have paid an enormous amount for tickets & travelled a distance . When you have such a huge capacity not everyone is going to arrive when gates open ( think of the queue) But what I find even more annoying are the ones that drink incessantly- moving past everyone to fetch drinks , coming back with them - then the inevitable need to do the same again & again . It beats me why some people feel they have to drink constantly at gigs !!
Each to their own 😀

I’ve never been to Glyndebourne, but I know some people just regard it as part of the social calendar, rather than having a real interest in opera.

I have been to the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden regularly since I was in my early twenties, and I have never once seen any bad behaviour. Same applies to the very many classical concerts I’ve been to since I was a child.

I think if you have t been to an arena or stadium since 1982 , you’ll find the acoustics / speakers are a tad better nowadays .

I'm afraid that I've been spoilt by the musicians I saw in my youth and the spaces where they played. Ranging from Tamla Motown Road Show, Dylan, Stax Volt, Hendrix, Stones, Beatles, Yardbirds, Cream, T Rex Grateful Dead, Captain Beefheart etc etc.

Apart from the 2 venues mentioned in my previous post the largest venue was the old Wembley Pool.

I accept that equipment has improved but I don't like the large venues.

Luckily some of the older bands were still touring around small venues. The Cambridge Corn Exchange was good. We saw several oldies there.

Good to see that many of you are still gigging!

paddyann54 Thu 13-Jun-24 22:43:58

Aveline, how was the highland dress OTT and why was what they were wearing relevant ?I must have missed the memo about wearing the kilt in the theatre ,you,re showing your Scottishcringe syndrome Ithink.I do agree dogs at music venues is a bit odd but not what they were wearing….they may have come from a wedding….maybe their own.Who knows?

DH's business partner and his wife were at the opera last Tuesday. He was very unhappy when two men arrived all dressed up ( in OTT highland dress) and bringing with them a dog in a pram. This creature barked and whimpered throughout.
Surely that's anti social behaviour.

Was no-one able to say "No, that is not acceptable, you cannot come in here with a dog" and refuse to admit them?

Entitled idiots.

Grannynannywanny Thu 13-Jun-24 22:50:53

Maybe the dog likes to listen to Woofgang Amadeus Mozart or even Clawed Debussy 😆

Many years ago we saw The Jam in concert at Hammersmith Odeon, sitting in the circle. A few people got up to dance and the bouncers immediately threw them out. I thought that was a bit harsh because they could have told them to stay in their seats.
…..,,,,..
Around 20 odd years ago. A friend & myself went to an Elton John outdoor concert at a Stately home , all seated 🪑
We dared to get up to dance to “ 🐊 Rock” & were told to go to the back of the seats !!

We went to an outdoor Elton John concert overseas.
The well-behaved young people sitting next to us started bopping in the aisle - it was lovely!

We went to the Hammersmith Apollo a few years ago, we paid a lot of money for our seats, within 20 minutes of the band starting a whole load of people ( with drinks in hands) came down to the very front of the stage and stayed there through the whole of the concert, Security let them all stay.

We all had to stand whether we wanted to or not, but it was still difficult to see the band with so many people ( from the cheap seats?) in front of us.

bother going there again

paddyann re the highland dress I should have said more - it was full OTT theatrical Bonnie Prince Charlie style. Not exactly what ordinary Scots would wear to a wedding.

I am! I'm off to see the Foo Fighters next week and Green Day the week after.

I've been laughing about the dog in the pram going to the opera, along with its two doting owners in theatrical Highland dress!
Not funny for the opera-goers, of course, but just unbelievable that they were allowed in.

I doubt they'd have gone to the opera after a wedding; most people go for a meal with the other guests.

I can’t believe what I’m seeing here. How can anyone go to a gig and sit still?
I can barely sit with a drink in a pub and sit still if the jukebox is playing.
Absolutely, I can not understand this it amazes me at some of the gis, concerts I have been to (& I’ve been to a lot ):People sit stock still , not even tapping a solitary foot , beggars believe 🤔😢

How on earth were they allowed in with a dog, let alone one in a pram?

Misinterpreted

Tom Jones 4/07,
Rodgers & Chic 7/07
plus my DH is also going to see James 6/07
The above are all at the same Simmer concert venue , I brought tickets for Sir Tom for myself ( end of last year); & my sister ,he was our Mum’s favourite ❤️ I’ve seen him 5 /6;times before ,,last time was within walking distance from our house a complete rarity . Then a few weeks ago ,there was a £25 ticket day sale & I brought the 3 for 6&7 July for less than the original two !!
James Hunter 11/07
Billy Joel 9/08

I went to see Take That at the O2 Arena last month with DiL, full house, didn’t see any bad behaviour.

Have been to so many concerts and have been fortunate not to witness any bad behaviour. Mind you Prince Charles was very fidgety and kept coming and going between bands at one of The Royal Party in the Parks. (We were fortunate to be in the adjacent row to him in the Royal Enclosure 10 seats away 👑)

On the day before DS 4 was due DH and I went to see Paul Young at Wembley Arena, had a brilliant time as we were at the end of the row I was dancing in the aisle when the steward realised I was with child he was so concerned and asked me to tell him if anything began to happen 🤣🤣🤣

(We did have my hospital bag in the boot of the car just in case😱)

There were people from as far afield as Belgium.

The arena is all seated.

If people have paid so much for tickets you would think that they would have made the effort to get there in time and want to see the whole concert!

The gates opened well ahead of the start time and there were different entrances depending on where you were sitting. The venue is exceptionally well organised in order to deal with the volume of people.

People were also going backwards and forwards for drinks throughout the concert - very annoying.

Maggiemaybe Fri 14-Jun-24 10:13:55

There are (at least) two completely different scenarios here.

Outdoor, unseated gigs, where we can all sing, dance, drink, eat and move about to our hearts’ content. Get in the throng at the stage or stay well back and sit on a step enjoying your chips and beer. You can easily move if you don’t like the company next to you. I love these venues - the only drawback is that you can end up very, very wet. smile

Then there are indoor gigs with allocated seating, where people pay (a lot of) money to actually sit down and enjoy a show. Not to watch Nige and Sue from up the road jigging around, shouting along and parading backwards and forwards to the bar and the toilet because they can’t go an hour without three or four drinks. I’ve even seen people dancing around in front of people in wheelchairs at the front, completely blocking them off. Unless we know that the venue has decent security that will act, these venues are getting less and less appealing to us.

Grandma70s Fri 14-Jun-24 10:25:58

I am trying to imagine what it would be like if the audience at say, Swan Lake, decided to get up and join in. Could be fun.

Elless Fri 14-Jun-24 10:40:13

We went to see The Eagles and The Doobie Brothers last week at Co op Live. The Eagles were the main event but I wanted to see the Doobie Brothers mostly. We were sat on the end seats and the show was spoiled by people asking what seat number I was and having to stand up to let them past. People should have to be seated before the show starts (I understand toilet needs etc). We paid £400 for our tickets, it was so annoying.
Talking about taking a dog - a young couple sat in front of us with a newborn baby in a sling strapped to the mum's chest 😲

Grannynannywanny Fri 14-Jun-24 10:46:27

I completely agree with Maggiemaybe. It’s frustrating if it’s a seated venue and someone in front decides to stand up instead with zero consideration for anyone seated behind them.

I have taken a learning disabled relative to concerts and our experience has been ruined in these circumstances. He was unable to stand upright and required a seated venue. If it was just someone immediately in front I have politely tapped and asked them to sit down and folk are understanding under the circumstances. However, if it’s someone 10 rows ahead who stands up first and everyone else has to follow suit it’s a lost cause. We ended up surrounded by folk standing and our evening ruined.

Even when I managed to book front row seats we ended up blocked in by folk who decided to leave their seats and huddle at the front oblivious to security 😡

This is the concert we were at and had the same experience - except for the baby.

We did have a couple in front of us who were on their phones for half of the concert. They weren't filming, just looking at them. It was very annoying as it was in our eyeline.

I was great to see Michael McDonald with the Doobies. I wasn't sure whether he would be there as he hasn't always been with them (as a band)

” A man wagging his leg in time with the music “ !!!
Are you being critical of that ?
Believe me , I have been to concerts where most of the audience look half dead , sit not moving a muscle . Hats off to the leg wagging 😀

Having recently attended a concert where I felt I was the only member of the audience who was fully conscious, I take your point. I am not a wagger myself so I am probably unreasonably prejudiced. I prefer a distant but appreciative look while the music flows through me. Maybe I too appear to be semi-conscious to others.hmm

I used to go to Leeds Empire on a Saturday afternoon and sit in the gods for 1 shilling. I saw amazing acts, Ray Charles, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Everly Brothers and many more.
We were very well-behaved.

Recently we went to see Bob Dylan in Nottingham and Neil Diamond at the O2 and people were talking and milling about getting drinks etc all through the performance.
