Ten German Bombers

I feel ashamed to be English after reading about our loutish football fans singing this odious song with their stupid models of bombers, in the beautiful country that is hosting Euro 2024.
The German response has been measured and gracious but I think the fans should be arrested for hate crime and banned from attending future matches.
Or is it ok because it’s Germany and it must forever pay and be ridiculed for Hitler’s crimes? I hope they win the tournament and so far their playing has been glorious.

‘Saintly Scotland’ isn’t a personal attack Glorianny am sure you can see that.
Posters do get tired of the ‘everything Scottish is glorious’ hyperbole.

The insults aimed at paddyann54 show the very worst side of GN. Anyone posting similar views about England would be applauded for their patriotism, but Scottish nationalism is frowned on.

As for the chants, should we also ban the many songs written about the Germans?
Like
"Hitler has only got one ball" ?

It’s not the Scottish Nationalism that’s frowned upon it’s the constant insulting of anything and anyone south of the border.

I suggest you read paddyanne54’s post of 11.05.05 today which is extremely insulting…

It's a reply to two very insulting posts both of which attack paddyanne54 personally.
One describing it as "saintly Scotland" and one saying Ministry of Everything is Better in Scotland" to carry on with her one woman tireless crusade that Scots truly represent the very best of humanity.
It's fairly justified in my opinion to be rude to rude people. And the rudeness continues in the next post criticising her again and comparing her to Nazis.

Read those posts if you want real examples of insults.

And all because Scottish football fans have been praised.

Rekarie

I'm not remotely offended.

But as a mixed race woman I do dislike the lazy, and yes, desperate comparison, with racist chants

I totally agree Rekarie Racism is totally unexceptable, chanting and a few rude songs is part of being a supporter in the terraces and adds to the fun. I have been to many home and away matches
Posters saying it does not happen in Rugby are wrong it does.

"Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal" and your point is?

Well I'm not a football supporter in any way, but a quick Google told me that Chelsea have made the most in charitable donations. We could of course go on like this all day! with "anyway look what we've done or got what you haven't" oh well here's one, religious sectarianism that's a big fat 1 to your side.
I'll just reiterate, every nation will encompass the good, the bad and the ugly, Consider this, The British public donated a record, £13.9bn to charity in 2023, the most generous donations coming from Sheffield, yes that's Sheffield in ENGLAND!

So what next, accents, scenery, cities, governments, writers, artists, tv programmes, inventions, style, buildings, food, horrid histories, in this never ending merry go round of "anything you've got we can do better"

Rakarie let’s get things straight I m from a mixed race family and I was a service wife for 12 years living in a variety of counties so let’s not dismiss me quite so quickly I m certainly not the fainting kind but your post was judgemental of me while knowing diddly squit about me
I wasn’t comparing the chants to these songs in levels of abuse I was meaning it’s probably the same people who are dismissing it ‘as fun’ ( how easily can the written word be wrongly interpretative )
Maybe you’re newish or don’t read my posts if you did you would know I m as anti racist as you can get and not a fainting type I bet I could tell you some stories and adventures that would make you go grey 😀

winterwhite Sat 22-Jun-24 06:15:12

I am surprised that so many are happy to accept these unpleasant songs as 'banter', given the justified outrage when attempts are made to dismiss sexist talk in this way.

Singing patriotic songs to support one's own side is one thing, aggressive chants about the opponents quite another.

Football should police itself. IMO if overly provocative chanting is heard the game should be stopped.

Meantime Scottish fans have been voted the Fans of the tournament by a German radio station,A poster of two young fans holding an umbrella over an elderly man walking through Munich has been displayed all across the region and the train my friend was on had an announcement asking everyone to stand up for Flower of Scotland ...which they then played .All NINE carriages stood and sung
We maybe didn't win our matches but the literally thousands of msgs received by German newspapers praising our fans is great.
Nice to see them receive appreciation.
The Tartan Army collects money and donates to childrens charities in EVERY city they play in...last week was the one hundred and first time they donated to a charity giving kids a weekend at a football camp..they gave £5000 ..The Mayor of Cologne has said they will be welcomed back with open arms ANY TIME .
Thats a successful trip

JenniferEccles Fri 21-Jun-24 22:45:23

The song is described online as a children’s song.
I listened to it and it did sound vaguely familiar from my childhood. It sounds pretty harmless to me.

I know nothing about football as I have no interest in it, but I do know that the fans like to chant patriotic songs.

AGAA4 Fri 21-Jun-24 14:07:34

I certainly don't like the chants. As others have said they happen in other sports and have gone on for a very long time. This is, mostly, men facing off to each other and rather this than violence which happened frequently in the past.
I don't know what can be done about it as there are too many chanting to arrest them all. If I find it offensive I don't listen but I don't attend football/rugby matches so it only affects those that do. Monkey chants, however, are very offensive as they are focused on one or two players not the whole team.

maddyone Fri 21-Jun-24 13:47:45

Racist monkey chants are a different matter, and certainly unacceptable.

RosiesMaw Fri 21-Jun-24 13:24:19

Apologies for seeming rude- not meant to be directed at the poster, but the general tendency on much of social media to take it upon itself to pronounce on matters over which we have no control.

Mamardoit Fri 21-Jun-24 13:20:47

It certainly happens in other team sports. The Aussie cricket fans are renowned for their banter. Especially when they play England.

Jaxjacky Fri 21-Jun-24 13:20:23

BlueBelle, as Marmadoit said, I’ve been there, it does happen at cricket and rugby, not just football.

Rekarie Fri 21-Jun-24 13:18:39

Iam64 Fri 21-Jun-24 13:16:01

Rekarie- Disagreeing with posters doesn’t always lead to accusing them of being ‘desperate’. It sounds as though you’re offended by BlueBelle but as you point out being offended doesn’t make you right

Rekarie Fri 21-Jun-24 13:12:59

Well,*BlueBelle*, you're wrong. You do get chants in other sports as has been mentioned upthread.

Not on at all to compare this with, as you say, monkey chants. That's a sign of desperation on your part.

Dark humour in the armed forces are renowned. You'd probably faint if you'd heard my father's tales of WWII.

So you can be as outraged as you like if it makes you feel better.

Being offended doesn't make you right.
