Ten German Bombers

I feel ashamed to be English after reading about our loutish football fans singing this odious song with their stupid models of bombers, in the beautiful country that is hosting Euro 2024.
The German response has been measured and gracious but I think the fans should be arrested for hate crime and banned from attending future matches.
Or is it ok because it’s Germany and it must forever pay and be ridiculed for Hitler’s crimes? I hope they win the tournament and so far their playing has been glorious.

No BlueBelle, I don’t find monkey chants amusing. The Stratford End chants were rude, but not racist when I was there.
It’s dismissed in the way Banter is, I don’t like that either. Footie fans are better behaved than they were. The crowds are also huge with a boisterous culture. 75,000 at MUFC and very rarely any trouble, we’ve taken children and been perfectly safe

I wasn’t “clucking” RosiesMaw. Please don’t be condescending and rude.

Agree to differ, I do not think for one minute that any “discussion” on GN substantiates the claim
I believe that discussion should be invited, so the authorities send out a clear message that such acts of hate won’t be tolerated
So yes, “clucking” about covers it.

So yes, RosiesMaw, rude just about covers it.

BlueBelle Fri 21-Jun-24 13:03:24

Believe me, this is very tame
So that makes it alright then
Looks as if a lot on here are condoning it or enjoying it I think it’s very offensive and think they should be chucked out or banned I suppose the same people condoning this think the monkey chants are funny
You don’t get this behaviour at any other world wide sport rugby, tennis, golf, cricket, cycling, marathons you name it just crowd encouragement
Awful advertisement for this country

Iam64 Fri 21-Jun-24 12:42:43

It’s offensive and I wish they didn’t do ww2/munich/hillsborough etc
I confess to laughing at the chants from the Stratford end at the theatre of dreams. Shocking but hilarious

Each team gives as good as it gets. It's always been the same . It's not about hate they just enjoy the ribbing.

Sorry. Do you speak German. I was useless and didnt take the opportunity to learn a second language from my parents (my mum also speaks fluent german). I can understand a bit.

I was bilingual until I went to school - but then my mum stopped speaking German with me which was understandable in the early 50’s.
I took German at school and French and German at university and occasionally I’d be surprised at “knowing” a word or phrase I had no recollection of being taught!
I think what you hear in the early years stick with you for life!

Let’s face it, there are very close blood ties between the British and the German royals and there are more similarities than differences between the 2 races. Football crowds are football crowds, who gives a toss? It is what you call a press beat up by the sounds of it. We have heard zilch over here, not worth even thinking about.

maddyone Fri 21-Jun-24 10:46:22

I don’t think it’s a big deal. Football fans have always sung songs that are mildly offensive. So long as it doesn’t erupt into violence I’m okay with it.

Not being a football fan (or a fan of many sports at all) I was completely unaware of this song. When I was in school we sang:

Two German officers crossed the Rhine
Parlez-vous
Two German officers crossed the Rhine
To f**k the women and drink the wine

There are several verses to this. I learnt them on the school bus. Some of the lads had been on a army cadet camp. There were on adults on the bus of course just the driver. He joined in with the chorus.

Roll me over in the clover was another song from the army cadets.

Mamardoit Fri 21-Jun-24 10:39:44

Some have led very sheltered lives and are very easily offended. All football fans sing songs about the opposing side. It happens in other sports too.

I can't say I like the songs my sons have joined in with at cricket or at the ruby club but it happens after a drink or two.

I'm sure it doesn't reflect any hatred of Germany. The English are subject to far more hatred for things the empire did hundreds of years ago. Just the English of course nothing to do with the other home nations.

German police are on record saying the English fans are behaving very well.

There are numerous clips on social media with English and German fans singing this RAF song whilst hugging each other.

Just take a look at the chants about Hillsborough that Liverpool club gets. Even the Buzby Babes feature in chants.

This is football. Stop fretting.

Bumface Fri 21-Jun-24 09:46:23

I am not a football fan but I know that most supporters are pretty well behaved and the hooligans are a minority.

I used to live close to a football ground and I could hear the shouts and the chants mostly rude but relatively harmless.
One day I kept hearing some of the crowd hissing. I asked my neighbour what was it all about and he told me that Tottenham Hotspur were playing and it was the home fans hissing. Years later I Googled Spurs and worked out what the hissing was about, needless to say I was horrified.

Galaxy Fri 21-Jun-24 09:31:54

But also trusting those in power with control of speech has always ended badly.

Rekarie Fri 21-Jun-24 09:29:12

So true, Galaxy

I'm guessing that those getting irate about this know nothing about football chants

Believe me, this is very tame.

RosiesMaw Fri 21-Jun-24 09:25:59

La Crepuscule I believe it should be dealt with by the appropriate authorities.
Clucking about it on sites on social media achieves nothing.

Like Galaxy I too am half German but have no partisan bias regarding either nation.

I am half German, my father is German. I am much more frightened of the people who want people arrested for singing a stupid song than the singers themselves.

👏👏👏

GrannyGravy13 Fri 21-Jun-24 09:13:08

It’s not just U.K. supporters, Serbian fans were arrested earlier on in the week due to their behaviour towards a group of English fans.

Football from around the world has always had partisan chants, this doesn’t make it okay.

Does it make me ashamed to be English, no never, as there are 1,000’s of other fans not chanting .

Rekarie Fri 21-Jun-24 08:54:16

It's football.

LaCrepescule Fri 21-Jun-24 08:52:48

RosiesMaw, are you suggesting we ignore this behaviour? I believe that discussion should be invited, so the authorities send out a clear message that such acts of hate won’t be tolerated.
