Children in shopping trolleys

Just been reading the thread about dogs in cafes. Another thing that annoys me hygiene wise is children sat in shopping trolleys. Not toddlers sat in the proper seat but actually IN the trolley with their shoes on

I don't trust the cleanliness of supermarket trolleys anyway. Why would anyone? Remember all that trolley swabbing people did a few years ago, not to mention food packaging swabbing!

Oh dear, I’m guilty as charged. The youngest is too big for the trolley seat but young enough to be tired after school. In he goes, sits happily watching things go by, putting pieces of shopping in the bit he isn’t sitting in. Yep, he has his shoes on. If this is the worst grannie crime I commit in a day, I’m doing well

To be honest I would much rather the child was sat in the trolley than running around, bumping into people and grabbing things off the shelves

We have all done this with our children and grandchildren. Your food is wrapped and you would wash fruit and vegetables anyway

Most food has protective packaging nowadays, pandapatch and fruit or veg that doesn't is usually scrubbed, peeled, cooked in boiling water (etc) so not hygienically endangering.

Hygiene where it matters is important but I think cleanliness is often over-rated in places where dirt isn't really an issue.

But let’s face it- nothing quite like a good moan, is there?
Dogs in cafes, children in trolleys, husbands trailing behind or getting lost, squeaky trolley wheels, self-checkouts or grumpy checkout staff.
Yawn

When my little grandson was in the supermarket trolley, he used to declare -“A HANDBAG !” in a really convincing Edith Evan’s’ voice which turned heads and caused much hilarity as he was only 4 or 5 at the time .

Feel like a mean moany person now!!! Have resolved to be more tolerant in future!!!

We do this sometimes with our GD now aged 3. She loves to take the groceries from us and keep the groceries tidy in the trolly. She is not running around the supermarket and is quite happy and safe, always in our sight. The trolleys themselves are left outside in all weathers, hold all sorts of things, so I really don't think her shoes are the dirtiest thing to be carried in the trolleys.

rafichagran Thu 29-Aug-24 14:12:51

I have done it before. I need to shop and it is easier. I did watch him though.
The food is covered. I can't get worked up about it.

It's the dog owners that are the problem then, not kids in trolleys.

Although, having survived multiple dog poo shoe contaminations over the years, and it's generally much less frequent nowadays (i.e. hardly ever except in woodland and traipsing through bracken), even that scare story doesn't bother me.

Consider the actual risk rather than the possible but unlikely one 😉

BlueBelle Thu 29-Aug-24 14:48:17

Would never worry about it at all 99% of the food is wrapped and if there’s an odd veg not wrapped you’d wash it anyway If the kids are happy and occupied sitting in the trolley I ve got no problem with it

I am with Cossy - try traipsing around a supermarket with three under 5s. Guaranteed that you would lose one. Frankly, if the poster is that worried about hygiene, wipe the flipping trolley down with some anti-bacs!!! Silly nonsense!

MissAdventure Thu 29-Aug-24 15:49:41

I'm quite put off by the thought of what's on the soles of shoes, I have to say.

@OP, do you actually put any uncovered food into your trolley? Even fresh fruit and veg should be in one of those (usually) biodegradable bags provided in the shop.
I really can’t see why anybody would get too worked up about a toddler in the trolley- once out of it they probably sit in their buggy anyway, so what dreadful germs are they going to impart to a trolley? Most trolleys live outside the shop too at least prior to being collected and taken back inside. Are you similarly worried about pigeons or other birds who might poo on a trolley?
Let’s not get too precious or fussy especially in regard to (probably) young mums/parents with more than enough to worry about with a toddler and the shopping to do.
Sympathetic rather than judgemental would be a nice change.

I agree with every word you have said, RosiesMaw2.

And we have had this discussion a couple of years ago too!

JenniferEccles Thu 29-Aug-24 16:44:12

I really don’t think there is any excuse for this when supermarkets these days have a variety of trolley options, catering for one or two toddlers, and some have seats for a baby and a toddler.

In any case from what I’ve seen, the child sitting in the main part of the trolley is invariably older than a toddler.

hamster58 Thu 29-Aug-24 16:57:14

I also find this unacceptable. Food may well be wrapped but we handle it and often it goes directly into the fridge. Any shoe, toddler or adult, that has walked on a pavement could have something unpleasant on it and I certainly don’t want that near my food.

Oh dear.

I was thinking of the time DH took the children to the park and they came hurtling into the house with dog poo on their shoes.
It took a lot of scrubbing with bicarb to get rid of the smell.

Most of us have shopped with small children ourselves.

MissAdventure Thu 29-Aug-24 17:12:55

Just yesterday people were onjecting to the smell of fabric conditioner on other peoples washing.

Pardon me if I prefer not to have the smell of dog crap on my shopping.

Exactly so a little empathy might be expected. But it's surprising how intolerant some older women can be - sad too.
Hands up anybody who has NOT had a little dear somehow detach themselves from your hand and disappear round an aisle? Every parent's nightmare.
