Does this really sell newspapers?

AIBU to wonder what sub editors (or whoever) think is a suitable front page to catch the eye and induce someone to buy a newspaper?
It used to be a NEWS picture or a tried and tested Royal or a “National treasure” but at the risk of sounding like “disgusted of Tunbridge Wells” I was underwhelmed by the front cover of todays Telegraph
Actually on looking further, the other two don’t impress much either!

The DT isn't a serious newspaper anymore. It concentrates on Tory scaremongering, bashing Starmer and badmouthing the BBC in my opinion.

9 times out of 10 we get yet another "revelation" involving some obscure half-celebrity who's involved in some Strictly Come Dancing scandal. Again.

Oops! I seem to have rubbed someone on a sore spot, so sorry.

8Crossstitchfan* That is a quite unnecessary and unwarranted personal attack on Ilovedogs22 . Why on earth should she be remotely jealous of the woman in the picture?

I often look at pictures like this and realise that once you have taken the expensive presentation away from show business celebrities, male and female, underneath is a very ordinary looking person, and, yes, lacking charisma, once the trappings re taken away.

If you do not think so, have a look at some of the off duty unexpected paparazzi shots you get of the same people when out shopping in their own dress down clothes. It is amazing what stylists, top make=up artists and hairdressers can do to even the most unpreposing individuals, again, male and female.

Funny, but I have noticed you take great delight in putting people down. You have done it many times before. We are entitled to our opinions! How dare you tell me what I should and shouldn’t say!
Please keep your nose out of my comments. If you don’t like them, don’t read them, but please back off!!

She's not doing any harm, poor girl. If you ask me there are too many images in general, taking up paper unnecessarily as well as internet bandwidth. If I had my way pictures would only be shown if they add detail to a story that is hard to describe in words. I hate the "file photo" habit, where a story about the NHS has some generic nurse, in case you're not sure what nurses look like in general. Or a stethoscope and syringe.

grandetanteJE65 How can we even pretend to talk about the equality of the sexes, when women in show business have to bare as much of their body as they possible can to get publicity and parts aand the same is not demanded of men?

It is going that way at the RSC men perform in their underpants, and have you seen the exhibitionists at the Pride parades.

NanKate Tue 10-Sept-24 16:11:36

I don’t know the name of the 2 celebrities but I am truly shocked at the male who parades his wife/girlfriend in virtually no clothes, a lot of them see through. She never smiles and must have been coerced into parading around like this. It is some form of mental and physical cruelty. What must her poor family think?

Cateq Tue 10-Sept-24 15:33:07

Babs03 I believe you’re thinking about Kanye West’s latest Bianca Censori whose outfit or lack of should be censored

TiggyW Tue 10-Sept-24 14:48:07

I don’t buy newspapers and the online versions are full of adverts (really annoying) so I don’t read those either. I watch tv news or listen to radio news instead.

It’s not just females in the media who are dressing like this. It’s a popular look with many females at the moment.

My mum would scatter her own ashes if I wore something like that out in public and off the beach!
I don't know why these people have to show off their body parts & if men did it they'd be crucified for it!
I suppose draping themselves over cars doesn't work these days, so they assume half dressing will get them noticed. Which it does, but not often in a good way, unless they're spotted by men wanting to take pics for their portfolio's or film producers looking for women who are happy to flaunt their bodies to the world!!
I'm not a prude, but I really don't think that much of the women who need to flaunt themselves as much!

She forgot to put her vest on. Her mother should have reminded her.

That made me chuckle

grandtanteJE65 Tue 10-Sept-24 12:48:11

I very much doubt that attacting men, or a man, has anything to do with this young woman's apparel.

She is an actress, and thus forced to keep herself in the public eye and in the eye of impresarios and theatre and film producers. She is after all employed to play a role for as long as it lasts making a film, or a television series or as long as the run of a play. After that she is out on her backside, depending on unemployment benifit until she gets a new part.

She is still of the age, where you wear the most daring fashions you have the nerve for - remember the topless actresses of the 1960s,? And our mini-skirts and no bras in the 1970s.

Basically women dress and make up to impress other women, rather than men, but those who have to keep themselves in the public eye do tend to go to extremes, and always did.

Paperlady999 Tue 10-Sept-24 12:36:04

I worked in local press advertising for fourteen years and still remember an early training mantra about newspapers. “The job of headlines is to make ‘em (the readers) MAD, GLAD or SAD” - that’s what sells newspapers!

Amazing that the formerly sensible old Telegraph is now desperate enough to try to appeal to newspaper
buyers with pics like this on the front page. Gorgeous girl, typical premiere outfit, but a bit trivial for front page news, as far as I’m concerned. I hardly think even one extra copy would be sold by its inclusion, unless someone happened to be a fan of the girl and happened to be passing a newsagent’s shop when that particular edition of the Telegraph was on display.

lamusica Tue 10-Sept-24 12:25:27

She didn’t need to do it. She’s so beautiful and such a talented actor she didn’t need to show everyone her almost naked body as well. Such a shame. But yes there are loads of leery old men reading the DT who will have enjoyed the thrill. Sad

mabon1 Tue 10-Sept-24 12:01:13

She's nothing you mention, are you jealous of a woman with a good body? I'd be over the moon if I had that body.

Esmay Tue 10-Sept-24 10:53:33

Careful broadsheets !
We won't be talking about page three tabloid girls anymore - it will page one Telegraph and Grauniad .

Babs03 Tue 10-Sept-24 10:20:08

Women should try doing what our male counterparts do, dress smartly but comfortably, no need to stuff yourself into suffocating dresses that pull you in and push you out whilst wearing heels you can’t walk in, or wear skimpy dresses that have to be glued on in all relevant places. Men would never submit themselves to this.
Thing is women’s clothes are never as well made as men’s, this is based upon the fact that women always buy more clothes than men, so women end up having to pay more as well.
About time we wised up to this girls 🧐

Lisaangel10 Tue 10-Sept-24 09:19:16

I remember when that famous photo of Kate Middleton was on the front pages. Taken when she was a student. A see through dress revealing her underwear. In fact that photo changed Prince William’s feelings about her.

Well, in a nutshell men get to wear what they want and women get to wear what men want as well.

Spot on.

I just wish the women who dress like this while spouting all the fashionable mantras about the freedom to dress as they wish, and not be seen only as sex objects, could see that

No, women wear what they “think” attracts men and many get it wrong, Glamour is wearing what makes you look and feel good, not showing as much flesh as possible.

Jackiest Tue 10-Sept-24 09:15:17

If you look around the men's wear department in the clothes store and then around the women's department I think we get a far larger choice of clothes than men.

Allira Tue 10-Sept-24 09:04:51

Whatever happened to glamour?
