Does this really sell newspapers?

AIBU to wonder what sub editors (or whoever) think is a suitable front page to catch the eye and induce someone to buy a newspaper?
It used to be a NEWS picture or a tried and tested Royal or a “National treasure” but at the risk of sounding like “disgusted of Tunbridge Wells” I was underwhelmed by the front cover of todays Telegraph
Actually on looking further, the other two don’t impress much either!

Must be a slow news day.

Had to read it to see who she was, oh yes, ‘Normal People’, she was very good in it.

The outfit was obviously chosen to make an impact, no bra, looks like some chiffon over a swimsuit.

Ilovedogs22 Mon 09-Sept-24 11:08:19

Oh yes, this odd looking girl seems intent on showing her bits! She is actually very plain with the star quality of a bag of soggy chips. 🍟

Babs03 Mon 09-Sept-24 11:08:44

Well they have got rid of page 3 and now just put pretty young women on the front page alongside actual news. So what a scantily clad young woman who must be famous in some way has to do with the NHS or WFA is anybodies guess.
Do we really need to ogle at women in order to buy a newspaper.
I know that the Guardian was under fire last year for simply showing pics of teenage schoolgirls alongside articles on education, presumably there were no boys available.

BlueBelle Mon 09-Sept-24 11:19:54

Well I don’t know why you call her odd looking Ilovedogs or plain She’s a nice looking girl but unnecessarily clad
If that’s the look she wants, fine, but shame on the Telegraph for sinking to such low depths

AGAA4 Mon 09-Sept-24 11:21:51

They should be ashamed catering to the perverts and oglers.

Or indeed under-clad grin

I think we have to assume that men buy newspapers[and write them] as much as women. Enough said.

NotSpaghetti Mon 09-Sept-24 11:31:51

She's off to a premiere though.
Clothes more appropriate than the image suggests!

I admit I thought it was an AI image though as her shoulder (her left) seems wonky!

Chocolatelovinggran Mon 09-Sept-24 12:34:38

She forgot to put her vest on. Her mother should have reminded her.

No liberty bodice either tsk!

eazybee Mon 09-Sept-24 12:37:35

Having seen her on film and TV I know she is pretty with an expressive face and a good actress, but I do not feel this outfit is at all flattering, or appropriate. The beach, maybe?

I think it is a mark of present-day female desperation to appear sexy. If done to attract the male, just think what type of man you are attracting?

I think that women in the entertainment industry are encouraged by management/agents and by societal attitudes to wear as little as possible. Is still a patriarchal world we live in and men’s likes/dislikes dictate a lot of what we see on the telly, at the cinema, on stage and in music venues.
Of course women should feel free to wear what they choose but how much do others influence their choices.
Overall men do face this at all.

Babs03 Mon 09-Sept-24 12:47:07

Correction - overall men do not face this at all.

It'll be giving the old colonels a heart attack!

Indigo8 Mon 09-Sept-24 13:01:27

I nearly clutched my pearls!!!!
Why isn't she wearing a petticoat or at least a waist slip? You can see her legs and her knickers!!!!

Joking apart the DT used to be a serious newspaper so did The Times and the Grauniad.

Bit unnecessary and mean Ilovedogs22 if I may say so.

Mollygo Mon 09-Sept-24 13:01:39

Wasted on me.
I had to go back and look at the pics after I’d read the comments. I didn’t notice them first time round. Too busy reading the headlines.

HousePlantQueen Mon 09-Sept-24 13:59:47

Like a lot of printed media, the Daily Telegraph is getting increasingly desperate in its attempts to encourage people to buy the newspaper. It used to be a serious publication, even if I did not often agree with the political stance, but no longer.

\I am more concerned by the nasty comments by some on here; why do women always do other women down? I don't mean the joking comments about vests and slips.

M0nica Mon 09-Sept-24 14:11:22

Daily Telegraphs long slow-burning response to The Sun's page 3 girls. At this rate in about 10 years time it will mortally offend Liverpool and no longer be able to sell copies there

The Times:

"Send in The Clowns to help children heal quckly"
Personally, that would have sent me into hysterics and hiding under the bedclothes.

Perhaps Daisy was en route to the beach? Lovely colour!

TheWeirdo Mon 09-Sept-24 14:22:55

I've never heard of her but if I was to ''wear'' that outfit in public I'd be done for indecent exposure so how come ''celebrities'' can get away with it?!

No it's a Premiere of something.
It says so below.

I don't know if Ilovedogs22 and others are women or men. I know that not all GNs are women and that in the normal run of things men are just as welcome on GN.
