Wine-drinking on TV

Just finished rewatching Game of Thrones. Struck by the lakes and lakes of wine (Cersei and Tyrion definitely alcoholics.) Now watching Apples Never Fall. More wine, at every opportunity.
It seems as if every time a TV character gets home from work, she (usually a she,) pours herself a bucket of sauv blanc.
I’ve been sober for over a year and maybe this is why I’m noticing it more.
Is this normalising alcohol abuse or am I overreacting?

Yes, I thought in Apples Never Fall, Brooke especially always seemed to have a glass of wine in her hand.

Big glasses, not always that much in them.

But I agree, reaching for a drink as soon as they get home from work seems de rigeur (maybe spelt wrong) for many programmes.

Either pouring out a glass of wine or cracking open a can of beer.

I think it’s possible, given your personal experiences, you might be slightly overreacting, but it’s understandable

Don’t let Keith Starmer hear you. He’ll restrict wine drinking after work to improve the nation’s health. 😂😂🥳

A cup of tea for me please 😁
Even if I've had a cuppa when I'm out I do have to have another one when I get home.

I'm not averse to a glass of wine with a meal later though.

Quite agree about the compulsory drink after work, LaCrepuscule. I've been annoyed by that for years now. I do drink alcohol, but not every day!

Sorry, LaCrepescule for spelling your name wrongly!

Yes, I'm sure I saw it in some news medium somewhere!

We're already quizzed every time we have a medical appointment - even the physiotherapist and podiatrist wanted to know how many units I drank per week.
Our locum GP said no-one should be drinking any alcohol, it's wrong.
🤔

I was actually joking but never mind. 🤔

I realised that 🍷
Please save that until the sun is over the yardarm.

That’s it I am doomed 🥂🍷

I hope I haven’t turned into a party pooper. And there’s obviously nothing wrong with a glass or two at the end of the day or with a meal.
Or even the odd blow-out at weekends!
I just think society is so hypocritical about alcohol. It’s legal so it’s ok whilst those who use recreational drugs are seen negatively. If alcohol appeared now, no way would it be legal.

I agree.

LaCrepescule Thu 26-Sept-24 16:38:05

Actually I think drugs should be decriminalised and that drug abuse be dealt with more sympathetically (a separate issue.)
I know that alcohol, when used sensibly, can be very enjoyable. Nothing like a lovely glass of something for no particular reason!

I think it probably would but certainly tobacco wouldn't!

Humans have been making and consuming alcoholic beverages for at least 9,000 years.

Eh?

Grantanow Thu 26-Sept-24 17:10:51

If I'm bothered by the alcohol police I usually mention Churchill's enormous consumption of champagne, brandy and cigars. A period of silence usually ensues.

LaCrepescule Thu 26-Sept-24 17:14:38

I’m not the alcohol police. You have misread me.

M0nica Thu 26-Sept-24 18:08:58

I have never understood the attraction of alcohol, beyond an odd glass of something being drunk between friends or with a meal.

The taste of alcohol is an aquired taste, the effcts when you drink any but a small amount are unpleasant and when you drink too much you feel ill all the following day as well.

I noticed many years ago that the drink of choice in the soaps became wine. They were forever opening a bottle!

MissInterpreted Thu 26-Sept-24 18:16:16

Was the wine drinking really the main thing for you to worry about in Game of Thrones?

Babs03 Thu 26-Sept-24 18:46:52

Have never come home, opened a bottle of wine, and glugged half of it, as happens in films. Now we don't drink at all due to health problems but have never been drinkers, just never liked the taste. Why don't people come home and stick the kettle on to have a cuppa?
And the glasses they drink out of these days are the size of a soup bowl.

Babs03 Thu 26-Sept-24 18:49:17

Btw am not suggesting people should be teatotal.
Or that soup bowl sized glasses are a bad thing.
Or anything other than just making a comment really.
