Wine-drinking on TV

Just finished rewatching Game of Thrones. Struck by the lakes and lakes of wine (Cersei and Tyrion definitely alcoholics.) Now watching Apples Never Fall. More wine, at every opportunity.
It seems as if every time a TV character gets home from work, she (usually a she,) pours herself a bucket of sauv blanc.
I’ve been sober for over a year and maybe this is why I’m noticing it more.
Is this normalising alcohol abuse or am I overreacting?

Kettle on when I get home, but a glass of white with my meal - yummy

In 'days of yore' beer or ale was nowhere near as strong as we drink today and it was safer to drink than water.

We have cut down our alcohol consumption considerably, mainly to save money!

I can't understand how the Rovers Return customers can afford to go in the pub most lunchtimes and/or evenings when none of them have particularly good jobs? Pub prices these days mean I usually have a lime and soda when we go out!

We do both drink (and enjoy doing so) - but it never was something we did immediately on arrival home from work.

I know you got into this "habit" but I think you are right and it's not normal (whatever that is exactly). I hope you are feeling better for the change.

To put it into context, DH doesn't get home, on a normal night, until around 7.30-8.00pm, so it's not as though we're hitting the bottle at 5.00-6.00pm! We'd basically sit down for dinner as soon as he gets home ... with wine!blush

However, as I said, we've put a stop to that during the week, and are enjoying it sensibly at the weekend.smile

I've noticed this too! Everyone gets indoors and the first thing they seem to do is pour a glass of wine, whatever the time of day. We'd never do that, but we do put the kettle on. We must be very boring.....

It’s a parallel universe, Shantygirly. So many of them are on minimum wage yet most of them also have breakfast and/or lunch in the cafe as well as coffees galore, the bistro is never short of customers, and they can organise a party with a couple of hours’ notice. I suppose the writers need all these hubs to gather the cast together so they can divulge their innermost secrets to whoever happens to be eavesdropping at the next table.

LaCrepecule same goes for tobacco. Cigarettes would be first on my list.

It must just look more dramatic to pour wine in a glass than plop a teabag in a mug.

When watching old films (Cary Grant era etc) I'm always shocked at all the cigarette smoking. Perhaps actors feel the need to do something with their hands hence the cigarettes replaced by a glass of wine - what next?

So many people did smoke, though.
It was considered 'cool' and sophisticated.

Thank goodness Tony Blair banned smoking in pubs etc; I remember going home stinking of smoke from work, from the pub even though I didn't smoke myself.

I’m always surprised at the amount of wine drunk on tv. Recently I watched the Amazon series about Prince Andrew’s demise and in that Emily Matlis glugged wine copiously!

Having said that I have just put a bottle of wine in the fridge (first time since last Xmas) however I am 78 today so that is my excuse 🤪

Happy Birthday NanKate. Enjoy your wine 🥂

Don’t let Keith Starmer hear you. He’ll restrict wine drinking after work to improve the nation’s health. 😂😂🥳

This sort of comment is so immature

Maybe it’s not that new - I can remember a ‘comedy’ series with Terry Scott (Terry & June?) and he poured a whisky as soon as he got home. Think it was much the same with Jerry and Margot in The Goode Life.

clearly, there is something wrong with me as I never think of drinking any alcohol. A few weeks ago I had a friend stay for a few days, I know she likes a glass of wine with her evening meal so I opened a bottle of Shiraz. I cannot remember the last time I had a glass of wine before that, at least a couple of years. I always have a few bottles in the cupboard.

So pleased you said about the constant drinking on tv. It’s not normal to drink constantly as most tv. programmes suggest. Ok the occasional drink but does no one on tv. consume tea or coffee, or even water? They do in my circles.
Every worry they turn to booze. Every celebration it’s booze, it’s not my world. It’s not natural.
I often think at the end of programmes where booze is consumed, perhaps give the AA contact details.

It’s always 5 o’clock somewhere!🍷

Kate1949 Sat 28-Sept-24 09:44:23

People don't need the number for AA if they enjoy a few glasses of wine. It can help people relax if they are going through tough times. When my husband was having chest pains through stress at work, his GP, after ruling out illness, told him to sit quietly at night and have a couple of whiskies.

Granmarderby10 Sat 28-Sept-24 10:29:21

For me it is more a change of British culture, and it feels unfamiliar to me. Perhaps it is a form of self medicating but no worse that guzzling bags of sweets and bars of chocolate ☺️…in moderation.

annodomini Sat 28-Sept-24 10:31:30

I've nothing against wine, but when I was young and single (those were the days) it would have been G&T with ice and a slice of lemon, after work and before a night out.

Etoile2701 Sat 28-Sept-24 11:03:28

I think you might be overreacting due to your past experience.

Etoile2701 Sat 28-Sept-24 11:04:22

That is going too far surely!?

Etoile2701 Sat 28-Sept-24 11:05:34

My mother was told the same thing regarding whisky. I find that the only thing that helps my IBS is a glass of brandy. People can be very judgemental.

Etoile2701 Sat 28-Sept-24 11:06:35

I can't remember the last time I had a cup of tea, and I only have two cups of coffee a day ... and very rarely a glass of water.

Chocolatelovinggran Sat 28-Sept-24 11:14:23

Remember Benjamin Franklin :
In wine, there is wisdom
In beer, freedom
In water, bacteria.
