To complain about public urination

Sorry, I know it isn't pleasant, but it really winds me up. Went to visit a friend in a block of flats near us the other day, is a nicely maintained block but when I got in the lift was the unmistakeable odour of urine as well as the tell tale stains. And of course it is men doing the honours. Seems that we can't use a subway, enter a public stairwell or lift, or take shelter from the rain inside a shop doorway, without the smell of urine assailing us. Just because men find it easier to urinate in public than women surely doesn't mean they can do it whenever and wherever they want. And they aren't all drunks. In a park across from us we often see men just out walking the dog etc., dodging into the bushes for a wee, thing is there are two lots of public toilets in the park, well signposted and open all day.
Is sheer laziness and a lack of consideration for others.
Would like to see a national campaign aimed at preventing this, I know is a public offence to urinate in public but who is policing this?

I was watching something on TV the other day where they were refurbishing a very old building. The bottom set of bricks were angled so that if someone urinated against them, it splashed back on their shoes and trousers. It's the last one remaining if I remember rightly. They should put something similar in certain places now.

Objective: Until recently the generally accepted paradigm implied that urine of healthy people is sterile. In the present study, urine of healthy subjects was investigated by extended bacteriological methods.

Material and methods: Three midstream urine samples from 52 healthy subjects each (24 females, 28 males; 18-25 years of age) were investigated by an extended set of culture media for identification of facultative aerobic (FAB) and nonclostridial anaerobic bacteria (NCAB). Ward's method (Euclidean distance) was used for similarity analysis.

Results: The bacterial count of FAB in urine was usually low (≤ 10(2) colony-forming units/ml) in both groups. In contrast, the bacterial count of NCAB was higher (≥ 10(3) colony-forming units/ml), at least in some species, with significant differences between genders. The average number of bacterial species found was 5.8 in female and 7.1 in male urine. Half of the females were assigned to a specific 'female' microbial spectrum, different from that of males. In the mixed-gender clusters, the males showed a greater similarity among themselves.

Conclusions: As also shown by other investigators, urine of healthy people is normally not sterile. The role of the routinely not cultivated bacteria in healthy and diseased subjects needs to be established. It may alter the diagnostics of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the urogenital tract

Adult human urine is not sterile. The resident bacterial community may contribute to urinary health and disease in undiscovered ways. Bacterial genomic sequencing and expanded urine cultures techniques are major complementary tools for scientific exploration in urologic research.

And yes, I do believe urine is sterile when it comes out, but that sterility obviously doesn't last long with exposure to the air. But give me good, honest urine any day over glyphosate etc. And it wouldn't bother me if someone urinated in my garden either - birds and cats do it, dogs do it. However those creatures also have a poo, and that would NOT be acceptable!

When rugby fans pour out of the pubs late at night, vomit, pee and poo in your garden on a regular basis as they did - or maybe still do - in Twickenham, I think you'd surely find the attitude rather annoying?

This, when I lived there, was at a time when public loos were still in-situ - and pubs have toilets.

Someone wrote to them as poo kept being done in the hallway of a block of flats, and I think it became quite an ongoing "case".
I can't remember how it ended, though.

Each time it was reported, another would appear.

Oh MissAdventure!

I wonder if the perp deliberately kept up the pooping in order to watch the programme's continuing case - or was totally unaware?

Anyway - Ugh!

I have spotted a lot of maes from foreign reg cars urinating at side of roads. Seems standard behaviour in a lot of countries. Agree though disgusting behaviour in buildings etc. Definitely cctv needed.

“… there are two lots of public toilets in the park, well signposted and open all day.”

Sorry, you’re making this up. Or you don’t live in the UK.

Oh but it’s true though one lot of loos are next to a large playing field where school kids come to play sports and other organised adult teams play football and cricket. And the other loos are attached to a cafe in the park.

Undines, it’s not disgusting, the alternative would be embarrassing and unpleasant. A world of difference between a discrete wee behind a bush, and urinating in a public place.

My husband has an over-active bladder and sometimes he just has to go - or else! I really do not see the problem as long as he is very discreet - obviously this is out in the country (where I really cannot see it makes any odds) not in a lift or public building. Although I do not share his problem I do need to wee frequently and am quite happy to squat behind a bush. I cannot for the life of me see why this is disgusting!

MissAdventure Sat 12-Oct-24 19:06:20

I think that's an old wives tale.
I might be totally wrong though.

Jaxjacky Sat 12-Oct-24 19:04:32

Without debating the whys and wherefores urine is sterile and won’t spread germs in itself, I’m more concerned about the unwashed hands and where they’re used afterwards.

I never saw it.
I'd probably like it.
(The programme, not the pissoir!)

Grantanow Sat 12-Oct-24 17:50:44

Did anyone watch the rather satirical 1972 BBC series Clochmerle about the acceptability or otherwise of a proposal to build a pissoir in the village square?

BlueBelle Sat 12-Oct-24 17:15:37

I ve certainly been behind trees or bushes in the countryside
Remember when Paula Radcliffe squatted down in the gutter and pulled her knicks to one side whilst running in a race

NannyMags Sat 12-Oct-24 17:14:24

@ Mum2Three oh my God this sounds horrendous. I couldn't bear it. Can you get camera’s to catch their faces to publicly shame them?

TwinLolly Sat 12-Oct-24 17:13:44

We had an acquaintance over for a bbq. At some stage her boyfriend disappeared. She mentioned her boyfriend doesn't use toilets when visiting, he uses the garden. We were shocked! He came back but not from inside the house. He'd obviously peed on our garden. I was furious! Hubby was angry. We never invited the couple back.

Sara1954 Sat 12-Oct-24 17:10:41

Dickens, if you lived in our area and saw the millions spent on repaving the whole town, and putting seats everywhere, in a town with no shops other than charity shops, barbers and nail bars. Where the once packed car parks are empty, the public toilets closed, the theatre closed, and still, year after year, they continue to dig everything up, it’s madness.

Gundy Sat 12-Oct-24 17:08:45

Omg, this sounds awful! I’m sure it’s happening here too 🤷🏼‍♀️ but I’ve never seen or smelled it. Maybe it’s where I live… in a middle class suburb in what’s called lake country and our community is a sleepy little burrow. People seem to behave. Even when I go into the city (and I used to live there) I’ve never observed it. Gross! Something should be done about it, for sure.

ordinarygirl Sat 12-Oct-24 16:45:48

i was at a bus stop around 2pm on a Saturday and a man urinated against the tree- on the main road. I believe the man was special needs but his carer did nothing to stop him from doing it.

there were public toilets not too far away .

So disgusting. Unfortunately “for men the whole world is a urinal”.
