To complain about public urination

Sorry, I know it isn't pleasant, but it really winds me up. Went to visit a friend in a block of flats near us the other day, is a nicely maintained block but when I got in the lift was the unmistakeable odour of urine as well as the tell tale stains. And of course it is men doing the honours. Seems that we can't use a subway, enter a public stairwell or lift, or take shelter from the rain inside a shop doorway, without the smell of urine assailing us. Just because men find it easier to urinate in public than women surely doesn't mean they can do it whenever and wherever they want. And they aren't all drunks. In a park across from us we often see men just out walking the dog etc., dodging into the bushes for a wee, thing is there are two lots of public toilets in the park, well signposted and open all day.
Is sheer laziness and a lack of consideration for others.
Would like to see a national campaign aimed at preventing this, I know is a public offence to urinate in public but who is policing this?

Start a petition and I would definitely sign it.

Seconded. It's just uncivilised. Maybe the dog walkers see their dogs cocking their legs, marking their territory & subconciously they copy them?

Wyllow3 Thu 10-Oct-24 21:52:31

I dont know who owns the flats, but a definite case for requesting CCTV?

Ziplok Thu 10-Oct-24 22:06:47

Yes, CCTV in the lifts,
Prosecution of offenders and an education campaign - it’s quite disgusting that some men feel it’s an entitlement to be able to urinate wherever they feel like doing it. Imagine the outcry if women decided to do the same.

When the captain of Manchester City has been caught twice ( on camera) urinating in public what message does that send.

My friend says there is some kind of residents committee who will take this up.

Nonnato2 Thu 10-Oct-24 22:19:43

I completely agree it’s disgusting.

maddyfour Thu 10-Oct-24 22:25:49

It is disgusting. But with the police overworked and not even following up shop lifting crimes, I don’t think they’d be interested in public urination.

No. And tbh I think is up to the government to come up with a national campaign, roll it out with posters and short info films during the adverts. And more CCTV as mentioned strategically placed with zoomed in images of the culprits put in public places.
Also let’s see schools bringing this up in class during pastoral or personal development sessions.

Babs03 Thu 10-Oct-24 22:32:47

Btw when I mention zoomed in images I mean if the face of he culprit not anything below the waist. 😂

In India it’s the norm to urinate & defecate in the streets, my friend went for her holidays & said it was he on earth 😩 people here should get a hefty fine & that includes spitting & dropping chewing gum

More public lavatories? Better loos in pubs? Long distance lorry drivers?

nanna8 Fri 11-Oct-24 01:02:21

Filthy beasts. That’s one thing about Australia, we have loads of well maintained public loos ,even in the smallest little town. Hope it never changes .

Esmay Fri 11-Oct-24 04:05:10

The smell is our local car park stairwells is appalling .
But the Council has shut all the local loos .
You are advised to use cafes .
They aren't open at night .

I remember groups of young men in my local pub deliberately marching outside to pee en masse in spite of the landlord's protestations. A bit like dogs marking their territory.

Sara1954 Fri 11-Oct-24 06:11:25

Men openly urinate in lay-bys these days, I know anyone can get caught short, but they could at least be more discreet.

mum2three Fri 11-Oct-24 06:26:46

I live near a pub and we have the same problem with late night drinkers. They are not content to pee against a wall....they try to do it through our letter box! Fortunately, it is a little too high but we get urine running down the door.

downtoearth Fri 11-Oct-24 07:17:00

Its digusting,I live near a lorry park, publuc toilets nearby, you can imagine the bottles of discarded urine.

Walking behind a man walking his dog when he snorted, cleared his throat and spat🤮.

It is only men I have seen do this🤢

Babs03 Fri 11-Oct-24 07:44:14

There may be a lack of public loos I appreciate that but this goes for both sexes yet we don’t see women urinating in public and stinking out public places. And believe me our bladders are just as full.
Fact is women have always think of where they can go to the loo, if is near closing time in the pub they make sure they go for a wee before leaving, if they are at the theatre or cinema the same goes, they wee before leaving hence the long queues for the ladies. When I go for a long walk with a friend who has problems with her bladder we plan a walk near public loos or cafes which have loos. Men don’t necessarily do this. I don’t know how many times my OH will announce after we have just left our ACs homes that he needs the loo, he would urinate in public but I do think men are tardy when it comes to this, some assuming they will just relieve themselves in public if caught short.

Babs03 Fri 11-Oct-24 07:45:29

Sorry meant to say my OH ‘wouldn’t urinate in public’, poor man I said that ‘he would’.
🙈

I live on the main road through our village (not big enough to be called a town)

I looked out of my kitchen window to see a middle aged man urinating at the bus stop at 2.30pm on a week day. I was about to call out to him when he turned round half squatted and defecated with his trousers round his ankles…

Sara1954 Fri 11-Oct-24 07:48:26

I know men are the main culprits, but after a night clubbing, I don’t think women are too fussy about where they wee. My dog walking friend says she often pops over a gate for wee if she’s on a long walk.

I have to say the countryside is a different matter, have walked and rambled all my adult life and in the countryside is permissible to dodge behind a bush and have a wee, this isn’t the same as urinating in urban areas, particularly in shared public spaces like stairwells and bus shelters where the smell is overwhelming.
