We are due to complete on the sale of our house on Friday. We don't bank online and as the money's to be paid into our personal account, we asked our solicitor to send us the bank details we gave them at the beginning of the process, to check everything is correct.

We've received a copy of the form we supposedly signed but it only has one signature which isn't mine, the account and sort code numbers are incorrect as is the contact telephone number.

We've spoken to our solicitor whose assured us no money will be transferred without checking on the day that the details are correct, but I'm not feeling at all secure.

Go to the solicitor and demand them make things right, what has happened is a breach of confidentiality.

I am so relieved that you have exchanges smileless, the process is stressful enough without having to check and double check the solicitors competency

My own money transfer had me shaking in my boots so I actually went to my halifax bank and the transfer was done by two people, including bank manager, working together. I was so scared of making even a one digit mistake

You could do with writing to the senior partner about the breach of confidentiality. You could have lost all your money because there was not due diligence at their end

Good luck for Friday Smilesless and congratulations on your new home.

crazyH my apologies if GSM is back, but I haven’t seen any recent posts from her.

Smileless, we've recently been through this stressful process of house purchasing ourselves, and it was a nightmare! Definitely, never doing it again!

I lost count how many times we had to correct our solicitors, and point out their errors. Seems they do a lot of copy & pasting, even with important legal documents & letters!

We had whole paragraphs in letters that did not relate to us, or our house purchase, which was rather confusing. When we pointed them out, they said they use the same letter format for all, and we should simply ignore what wasn't relevant to us! With the amount of money we had to pay for their services I would've expected letters written personally to us!

In some of the legal forms we had to sign and complete, we had incorrect vendor's names & addresses, as well as incorrect vendor's solicitors details! When we pointed out these errors, we didn't even receive an apology, or an explanation! They simply forwarded new forms and said, 'please find enclosed the amended form'!

It's simply not good enough! We put our trust in people like solicitors, when we are dealing with legally binding documents/contracts, and we have to pay a fortune for their services! I do wonder how on earth some of them ever managed to become qualified in the first place! It's frightening!

Anyway, Smileless, I wish you all the best for your completion on Friday, then you can put all the stress behind you and look forward to getting the keys to your new home!

I’m quite a tech fan having worked in the City for over 20 years. When I left in my thirties to set up my own business, rumour was touch typists would be extinct due to computers replacing us. Never happened. My experience of online banking is not particularly confident in the safety of it but I cannot purchase anything online without them double checking it is really me spending by asking me to check my phone, log in to online banking and confirm I wish to purchase. When I confirm that it is my wish to purchase, they authorise the payment to the seller. Lots of scammers on line but banks seem to do their best to protect their customers.
Having said that, totally understand the reluctance to do payments online. Husband bought a few items from a greengrocers on Saturday and was short of cash so tapped his card for the first time. The greengrocers charged an extra £30. He will never tap again. Refund promised but not received yet.
Be careful everyone.

Wish you the very best at this stressful time.

Just echoing what everybody else says Smileless2012. As if moving isn’t stressful enough, that’s just too bad. I hope the solicitor’s will be suitably embarrassed by their shocking errors. Wishing you all the very best for the move and in your new home.

I would get all your ducks in a row because if anything goes wrong on a Friday you will not be able to get anything sorted until the following Monday. Good luck. Moving house is an overrated pastime.

Thanks everyone for responding. Contracts were exchanged today and we'll complete on Friday. I'll be so relieved when it's all done and dusted. It's only 8 years almost to the date that we completed on the purchase of the house we're now selling.

Never again.

I hope all goes well - such a stressful time. I do agree 'never again' - my next move will be the one we all make, like it or not!

Yes I have, a few years ago now. I went to see the GP with a problem and he mentioned another problem I apparently had and the medication I was on. Another patient's records were completely mixed up with mine. They assure me they have corrected it.

Jess20, I recently had to repay a largish amount to a relative. Sent a small amount, and checked that it had gone through before sending the balance. Bank declined the second transfer and blocked my card. Had to go through hoops to get it reinstated. Apparently this is one way that scammers operate.

crazyH Tue 29-Oct-24 14:20:12

Has GSM left for a second time ? I thought she had returned?

NotAGran55 Tue 29-Oct-24 14:07:32

What a shame we no longer have GSM here 🙁

LovesBach Tue 29-Oct-24 14:01:17

Slightly off subject but I decided to register to see my NHS records. I'm so glad that I did, as details of a person living not far from me came up on my record, with photos of the problem that this person taken to the GP. I wrote at once to the practice manager, enclosing prints, and handed it in. Within hours the information was gone from my records. After a week, I emailed and said that unless I received a response I was taking my copies of the photos and information to the Area Health Authority. A few hours later a letter was hand delivered, explaining that a member of staff had been 'given advice,' that it was regarded as a serious matter at the practice, blah blah blah, and they assured me that my medical records were not compromised. I have no confidence that this is true - have any other GN posters had this experience?

Cateq Tue 29-Oct-24 13:43:24

That is a breach of the other person’s personal details. Your solicitor should have a process to report such breaches under DPA regulations

My own solicitor once sent me out of date details for their bank account, you're quite right to check.

Jess20 Tue 29-Oct-24 11:18:25

Really is worth checking and double checking. Our solicitors emails were intercepted and changed, she spotted it before anyone was scammed. The bank should have a record of where funds were sent when you previously made a successful deposit at exchange of contracts. Failing that, I send a smaller amount first and ring their office to ensure it arrived, then I'm sure of the correct details - and these don't suddenly change. If you have received someone else's bank details worth following up as they need to be much more careful with clients information. It's a scary time, transferring money, you are not unreasonable to be a bit rattled when things appear to be wrong as there are so many scams going on.
