We are due to complete on the sale of our house on Friday. We don't bank online and as the money's to be paid into our personal account, we asked our solicitor to send us the bank details we gave them at the beginning of the process, to check everything is correct.

We've received a copy of the form we supposedly signed but it only has one signature which isn't mine, the account and sort code numbers are incorrect as is the contact telephone number.

We've spoken to our solicitor whose assured us no money will be transferred without checking on the day that the details are correct, but I'm not feeling at all secure.

Smiles I would go to see your solicitor if they are not available see to their PA. I did that a few occasions and any errors where corrected in front of my and my signature witnessed ..

There has obviously been an administrative error. Keep on to it Smiles - on Friday, keep ringing your bank and checking that the money has gone through to your account. Better still, go to your Bank and check it and get the statement printed out showing that the amount has reached your account. Don’t worry too much….

I would also contact the solicitor to inform them that you are now in possession of account details, phone number and signature of another of their clients. I wouldn’t be happy with their dealings of confidential information!!

Thanks everyone.

They've since sent us a copy of our form and you make a very good point YorkLady, we hadn't thought of that hmm.

Absolutely agree with YorkLady........this is huge breach in client confidentiality. Go to the solicitors and demand this is corrected immediately - sounds like a matter for the law society actually!

Also take photos of documents. That way, they can’t get lost or mislaid.

Professional negligence. Can you ask your solicitor to visit you at home just so that you can be reassured that they have all the correct details. Don’t sign anything till you’re absolutely sure. Mistakes like that should never happen.

After renewing my house insurance I recv'd several pages of info relating to someone else telling me how much they were insured for and the details of the extra expensive items they had insured for large amounts. Phoned then and they just said to destroy, i just wanted to know if my details had been sent to someone else. Live on my own now so very worried about this but they just told me details hadn't been passed on - didn't believe them of course. Won't be re-insuring with them next year

TinyTina1 Mon 28-Oct-24 12:49:09

they have sent you another clients bank details by mistake, this is a data breach and they should now let their other client know of their error

These constant errors made by solicitors and legal people are a scandal.

If any other public sector workers made these kind of errors they would most likey be subject to disciplinary action, but when solicitors do it there is no redress.

In all the house purchases I've made (four) I have had to chase up sometimes quite serious errors whilst paying an arm and a leg for the privilege.

I am sure this will get sorted, but it comes as no suprise to me.

Good idea.

Really is worth checking and double checking. Our solicitors emails were intercepted and changed, she spotted it before anyone was scammed. The bank should have a record of where funds were sent when you previously made a successful deposit at exchange of contracts. Failing that, I send a smaller amount first and ring their office to ensure it arrived, then I'm sure of the correct details - and these don't suddenly change. If you have received someone else's bank details worth following up as they need to be much more careful with clients information. It's a scary time, transferring money, you are not unreasonable to be a bit rattled when things appear to be wrong as there are so many scams going on.

My own solicitor once sent me out of date details for their bank account, you're quite right to check.

That is a breach of the other person’s personal details. Your solicitor should have a process to report such breaches under DPA regulations

Slightly off subject but I decided to register to see my NHS records. I'm so glad that I did, as details of a person living not far from me came up on my record, with photos of the problem that this person taken to the GP. I wrote at once to the practice manager, enclosing prints, and handed it in. Within hours the information was gone from my records. After a week, I emailed and said that unless I received a response I was taking my copies of the photos and information to the Area Health Authority. A few hours later a letter was hand delivered, explaining that a member of staff had been 'given advice,' that it was regarded as a serious matter at the practice, blah blah blah, and they assured me that my medical records were not compromised. I have no confidence that this is true - have any other GN posters had this experience?

What a shame we no longer have GSM here 🙁

crazyH Tue 29-Oct-24 14:20:12

Has GSM left for a second time ? I thought she had returned?

Lovemylife Tue 29-Oct-24 15:37:01

Jess20, I recently had to repay a largish amount to a relative. Sent a small amount, and checked that it had gone through before sending the balance. Bank declined the second transfer and blocked my card. Had to go through hoops to get it reinstated. Apparently this is one way that scammers operate.

Yes I have, a few years ago now. I went to see the GP with a problem and he mentioned another problem I apparently had and the medication I was on. Another patient's records were completely mixed up with mine. They assure me they have corrected it.

Thanks everyone for responding. Contracts were exchanged today and we'll complete on Friday. I'll be so relieved when it's all done and dusted. It's only 8 years almost to the date that we completed on the purchase of the house we're now selling.

Never again.

I hope all goes well - such a stressful time. I do agree 'never again' - my next move will be the one we all make, like it or not!

Sarnia Tue 29-Oct-24 23:49:49

I would get all your ducks in a row because if anything goes wrong on a Friday you will not be able to get anything sorted until the following Monday. Good luck. Moving house is an overrated pastime.

Sasta Tue 29-Oct-24 23:49:55

Just echoing what everybody else says Smileless2012. As if moving isn’t stressful enough, that’s just too bad. I hope the solicitor’s will be suitably embarrassed by their shocking errors. Wishing you all the very best for the move and in your new home.

Grammaretto Tue 29-Oct-24 23:58:39

Wish you the very best at this stressful time.
