AIBU that as a new grandparents, who is refered to as Nanny by my kids and myself, my mother also wants to be called Nanny?

Back story she has 6 grand children already and 2 great grandchildren, from my children, her grandchildren
On a side note she also refers to my step dad of 53 years as 'Dad', not your dad so it sounds like we're sisters and he's our dad.

Granny for me, nanny sounds like a goat 🤣

MissAdventure Wed 04-Dec-24 13:07:14

Oh that's exciting!!
I wonder what she'll pick? smile

I waiting to see what my gd says. It will come from her, as a bilingual child with everyone referring to me as something different it could be anything and I really don’t mind. She’s at the babbling stage so something could be imminent!

My GS calls me nan. My GD used to call me nan but has recently started saying grandmama. No idea where that came from.

I think the word nanny originates from Wales, possibly, or I read something about dreadlocked warriors, somewhere, back in time.

A granny, here, would be a little old woman with a grey bun.

I'd rather be a dreadlocked warrior. smile

RieW Wed 04-Dec-24 12:05:53

*grandma ...

RieW Wed 04-Dec-24 12:05:09

Granma? Nanny is more of a carer to me, with American family.

To begin with I chose Grandma, then my DIL's mum wanted to be Grandma as well. I was told that it would be fine to have two, but I wasn't happy my nose was slightly out of joint, as I'd chosen Grandma first. Then I decided that being called "Nanny" would be an honour as my mum was Nanny and she died just before our GS, her GGS, was born. Perfectly happy with that.

My parents referred to my grandparents as Nan and grandad. My children did the same and then I was Nan but one of my grandsons has taken to call me Nanna. When he texts me he often starts by calling me Nannaaaa like a little boy although he is thirty.

I am Grandma to all my grandchildren. Their paternal grandmother, who died a couple of weeks ago, was Granny. My own mother was Nanny to my children and I have to say, she was never mistaken for the hired help. Whatever name our grandchildren call us by is special.

In our family grandmothers have always been Grannies. I'm Granny to my DGC, though often they simply call me 'Gran'. Greatgranddaughter calls me 'Ganny' at the moment, but when she can pronounce 'r', I expect that will turn into 'Granny'. My GSs' Irish grandmother is also 'Granny', don't seem to have ever been at all confused.

I am Big Granny to one side of my family (I'm not that big, but Little Granny is very small). I am Nanny to the other side.
I didn't choose, the kids did

Not been a fan of Nanny either.

I'm Grandma to my grandchildren.

As a child I had a Grandma and a Grandma London. For many years I thought everyone had this. Of course one of my grandmas lived in London so that's how it was.

harrigran Wed 04-Dec-24 08:32:26

I am Grandma,, wouldn't want to be called Nanny as it sounds like a hired help.

Dogmum2 Wed 04-Dec-24 00:37:54

I'm Mamma and my Mum is Mamma to my DD, and Great Mamma to my GS's. Mum is Nanny to her other GD.

No rules, be whatever you want to be or what the children call you.

I love being a Mamma and if i can be half as good as my (maternal) Mamma was i will be happy.

Truthfully i like the idea of all the females in my family being Mamma's (My great Mamma, was Mamma!). A nice tradition to start. My DD has said that in the future (if it happens) she would also like to be known as Mamma and that makes me happy.

I love it !

I’m Nanna and OH is Grandad. The other grandad died many years ago and the other grandmother, who died six years ago was Grandma. I loved it when my granddaughter first called out ‘nanna’.

Nanato3 Tue 03-Dec-24 21:38:08

To my daughter's child I am nana and her dad's mum is grandma.
To my son's children I am Nanny and their mum's mum is nana .
I had 2 granny's . It doesn't matter as long as the children are happy
Before g/d could talk properly my husband was do-do [laugh]

GrannyIvy Tue 03-Dec-24 21:35:17

I am Gran, the other grandparents are Nanny and Grandma. Sometimes my little grandson calls me GrannyIvy and I like this too. Hence my name on here GrannyIvy 😂

Gingster Tue 03-Dec-24 20:36:44

My Dh is called Gaga by the 8 grandchildren.
I’m a Nanna.

I don't think it matters Monica, some posters are just interested.

My daughter began referring to me as Granny when they got a kitten that I would visit & worship often. As I came in the door, she would call out "Granny's here Daisy!"
Daisy is now 17 and the title stuck.

mae13 Tue 03-Dec-24 19:10:07

Gran.

There are no rules really - the grown-up GC call me Nan - the two little girls call me nanny , the two little boys call me Nan. I get confused 😂 Today I sent a video message to my little boys, referring to myself as Nanny, thanking them for the coasters they made for me at school. I answer to anything anyway ………….
