Iraq legalises marriage so that 9 year olds can marry

Young girls are sent to Pakistan to marry much older men, sometimes related. It’s abhorrent and something needs to be done. Often they know and tell teachers but they are powerless to do anything.

My friend , as many Muslim girls was betrothed yo her cousin from birth .
University was planned for her .
One day, she came home from school to be greeted by her fiancé's family.
The marriage was rushed through because her formidable mother in law said that she was dying and wanted to see their marriage and at least one grandchild .

One of my friends was married at 13 ..
She told me how devastated she was .
She didn't even understand what was happening to her .
She gave birth to a huge baby girl just before her 14th birthday .
Her mother in law didn't want her to have a caesarian section and the obstetrician told her husband that his mother was murdering her .
She had a C section and was given contraception.
Her next child was born some years later .
And one more after a few more years after that .
At 13 she was far too young .
The thought of a 9 year old having sex and giving birth is unbearable .
Their bodies aren't ready .

Afghanistan also allows girls to be married at 9yrs old.

Most Muslims do find it shocking, and are annoyed that some Muslim clerics ignore the fact that the provision for girls below the age of puberty being able to marry, was, it is believed, originally only meant to cover orphans without near relations, in order to protect these girls from prostitution.

A man marrying such a girl, as the Prophet himself did, was expected not to consummate the marriage until the girl was old enough to know what that entailed. It was never intended that a child of nine should live as the wife (except in name) of the man who took her into his household and gave her a marriage contract.

The difference of course is that we dont have laws which permit men to rape children.

I deplore that kind of news of course but it seems to me we are in danger of ignoring severe cases of child rape and abuse in our own country (and the USA) and attributing all to "them" - other cultures - we are far from blameless.

People from all cultures standing together against child abuse is the way forward.

Oh, the 'Trad Wives', yes I've read about that movement.

I believe some of them are "influencers" (and that's a word I'd be happy never to have to read again), selling their lifestyle online. Apparently, some aren't even married, but that's by-the-by.

It all feeds into the narrative and is a great boost for the alpha-male ethos raging in America at the moment. Get the wimin back in the kitchen, ban abortion, get rid of immigrants and have lots of home grown babies to fill all the jobs required - back to the golden age (whenever that was) and MAGA.

It used to be the case in the UK,too, a few centuries ago. Mostly marriages made by the respective parents to ensure prosperity and uniting assets. The nobility in particular did this. More often than not the marriages were not consummated until the females were older. I sincerely hope this is the case in Iraq but I doubt it.

I recently read of a young girl of 9 being "married" and then she was raped to death. Poor girl....and was shocked to read that.

No-one should ever be married before 18 in any country - it's far too young. Add in "What if the poor child gets pregnant?" and I believe girls can become "fertile" as young as that sometimes and then you get a child giving birth to a child. Ugh!!!!

Unfortunately this country has invited various cultures to live here. Maybe some of them have the same views.

I remember seeing political commentator, Douglas Murray, on some discussion programme a couple of years ago, making the statement, which I imagine some would object to, "that not all cultures are equal" substantiating that in the way they treat women/girls and gay people. How can a 9 year old be married off, still a child, unable to give consent, treated as a mere chattel a commodity, no doubt money changes hands between her family and the man who acquires her. I've also read reports that this has happened in Afghanistan too. I was under the impression before I read this particular article, that the child had to reach a certain age, past puberty and that's bad enough, before the husband consummated the marriage. In this case the much older man, in fact quite old, who married the little girl, didn't wait till she was older to have sex with her, she the child was maybe 8 or 9, causing substantial injuries to her child's body, in fact she may have died. Sanctioned paedophilia! girls and women really count for nothing in these societies, of course we knew that about Afghanistan and now Iraq too. Shocking and appallingly regressive. .

Slightly off topic but relevant I think to discussions on equality. I read this morning of a growing movement in the USA for ‘wives’ to stay at home, not to be in paid employment.

I dont think she said that though did she. I assume she means those who legislate about child rape, and those who rape.
America as a country has a different culture around guns than we do, that doesnt mean there arent people protesting about it. Still has an issue with gun culture.

Yes of course it is.

To allow girls of 9 to marry is surely legalised child abuse. We should support all and any organisations which oppose it.
