We live on the coast and our road is often full of surfers stripping off to get into their wet suits, most of them try to be as discreet as they can and it is not a problem . I have lived here 50 years and is has never bothered me or my neighbours but a new family have moved in down the road and have put a complaint into the council and the police and have started a petition to stop the surfers changing, I refused to sign and think they are being petty , would this bother you ?

They must have looked around and checked things out before they bought the property. if they didnt more fool them. This custom was already there, not something that only happened after they arrived , so I think they have a cheek to expect the world to fit round them. If they dont like it they can move elsewhere to another area where prudish self important people cn get together. I think they have a cheek thinking the world runs round them and most definitely would not sign their petition. In fact I might start another petition if i was you. Have a new one aginst prudish self important new neighbours who would do better to learn about their new place before opening their ill mannered mouths to condescend to the inhabitants. What ever they do now I would not be including them in anything, unless they begged our pardon in the most abject manner. So if none of you sign and let life go on as usual and perhaps do a rival petition to say yes let it still carry on and all sign it so that both the police and the newbies will see how the land lies. More power to your elbow. Dont let the miseries rule the day.

No - wouldn’t bother me at all. As someone else said - people often change on the beach with varying success! Surely that’s not against the law?

It wouldn't bother me unless I had children and then it would if I thought that people were exposing themselves deliberately in front of them

JuBut Mon 27-Jan-25 14:31:47

How stupid, leave the surfers alone!

Dylant1234 Mon 27-Jan-25 14:34:48

Start a petition in support of surfers! What petty minded new neighbours you have….

No it wouldn't offend me, after all it's only part of the year. So much of this goes on I think they call it being a nimby like when someone moves next to a church and they want the bells to stop on a Sunday morning just because they have moved in.

I’d be in the window with my binoculars!

spabbygirl Mon 27-Jan-25 14:59:45

wouldn't bother me. I wouldn't sign either

Dogmum2 Mon 27-Jan-25 15:08:36

Nope, doesn't bother me in the slightest. Part of my family live in a place with a vibrant surf community, so everywhere you look are surfers.

So no, i wouldn't sign their petition. I'm with madeleine45 inasmuch as i would be tempted to start a 'Support our Surfers' movement.

Makes you wonder if they are, as others have said, standing watching/looking. They sound like the problem, not the surfers.

We have been looking for a property for some time and do a rigorous research of the area in which a house/bungalow is if we like the property. Crystal Roof do a good online breakdown of the area with regard to the type of neighbours you might have, especially with regard to crime rates. We also look at flood risk online and would not even think about living near a busy road, on a steep hill, or near pubs/restaurants or schools.
The onus is on the buyer to do their homework or adapt to their new neighbourhood rather than expecting the neighbourhood to adapt to them.

Mt61 Mon 27-Jan-25 16:07:17

No, would it heck 🤣

Dianehillbilly1957 Mon 27-Jan-25 16:08:22

Idiotic Newbies, get over it, no one else is bothered!

Landloper Mon 27-Jan-25 16:10:11

That reminds me of the family that moved from the city and bought a house into the village where I used to live. After two or three mornings the the mother and father approched the nearest farmer to complain that his cows were making 'too much noise'.

Tanjamaltija Mon 27-Jan-25 16:10:38

New brooms sweep clean sort of thing. They are trying to make their mark, and telling you what loose morals you have. I would not sign. If they have children, they can jolly well turn them around or cover their eyes, while the surfers change. They will eventually get used to it.

David49 Mon 27-Jan-25 16:25:00

I rather thought surfers wore swimsuits under the wet suits, I suppose they have to dry themselves when they go home, I dont see a problem if they are discrete and not making an exhibition of it.

Nantotwo Mon 27-Jan-25 16:34:31

What road is this precisely? .....asking for a friend 🤣😉

Gaga0123 Mon 27-Jan-25 16:43:43

Some people just like to complain for something to do, they should grow a pair and get on with their own lives
I definitely wouldn't sign it!

Mamo Mon 27-Jan-25 17:23:07

If the sea is as cold there as it is here, I doubt if there’s any willies to be seen!!

sharonarnott Mon 27-Jan-25 17:24:09

No it wouldn't offend me. I hope they don't get many signatures

love0c Mon 27-Jan-25 17:46:01

David49 You would struggle a bit to get the wet suit on over any clothing. They are made to be extremely tight to keep you warm. If it is not a bit of a struggle to get it on, then it is too big. I wear knickers under mine but nothing else.

homefarm Mon 27-Jan-25 18:06:09

What is it with people? they move into an area and then complain! It happens in this village a lot. They should do their home work before they move.
Good luck surfers just keep doing what you do and ignore the miseries.

Taffy1234 Mon 27-Jan-25 18:07:05

Can’t believe there are any children who are unaware of what the human body looks like. Surely visits to museums etc have statues and paintings containing nudes.
Surely the glimpse of a body would not shock anyone?

ReadyMeals Mon 27-Jan-25 18:11:05

We've all got bodies. God gave them to us. As long as they're not being sexual towards the family I don't know what the problem is.

Surely it can't be beyond their ability, when windsurfers load up their cars with the necessary equipment for the day to have a windshield or something that can be put up while they change and then folded and put back on the car or somewhere safe, and then used again when they need to dress? Ladies walking alone, or with their children , grandchildren or dogs should not be made to feel uncomfortable. It would not be considered acceptable for people to shop naked in the town centre so surely the same rules apply? Personally, I would avoid confronting naked people but would be a bit annoyed if I could not enjoy walking on the beach on a fine day in case someone decides to be naked, especially if I had grandchildren with me. When I first read the letter I thought "Oh I don't care either way", but on reflection, actually I do. Would it add much to the rates to have a designated changing area? Apparently there are nudist beaches in Britain if there are some with surfing abilities that would solve the issue. Some people make a big fuss about dogs being allowed on beaches. I love to see dogs enjoying beaches and would much prefer to see dogs than naked people.

Who is talking about naked people for goodness sake, we are talking about people discreetly changing. Dogs doing their business on a beach does not even come close to this issue. You might love seeing them there, but the average person, I would guess, prefers them not to be anywhere near where they are sitting and perhaps even having a picnic.
