Being told where to walk my dogs !

Today, DH & myself went for a drive out with the intention of stopping for lunch .

Our original destination had been a small local town, but it had a Thursday market & no parking so we drove around the local area until we found a country pub .
When I say “ drove round the local area” we drove for miles on country roads .
I went in & asked if dogs were welcome , which they were . I then took our 2 KCC for a little walk down the min street .

As we crossed the road onto the pub side of the road we passed a few cottages whose doors opened straight into the street . Before we crossed the road I could hear a dog barking as we crossed I realised the dog was inside one the houses . You know old stone cottages with 3 steps up from the street ,no front garden .
Before we got to a front door ,a woman appeared on the step ,asking “ are you alright ?
My response “yes, thank you , just walking my dogs before we go for lunch “
Her response ,”Your dogs re making my dog bark. , turn left at the pub ,you can walk your dog there “!,,,,

I mean ….wtf …!!!

I agree that the expression KAREN is outdated and hurtful -

It was on the local BBC news that you needed at least 2 poo bags when taking a dog or get fined. The same news that showed a woman getting fined for tipping her coffee down the drain rather than mess up a litter bin by putting a half cup of coffee in the bin. That fine was overturned but it appears that there are overzealous wardens in some areas.

I think I'd have just said ok, then gave her one of my Very Hard Stares once I'd gone past.

I’d have said thanks, walked on and forgotten about it.

Me too.

It can be done.

Patience and persistence - and treats.

Chaitriona

I don't expect it is very pleasant for her neighbours having her dog barking every time another dog walks along the street. Perhaps that is what makes her anxious. Or perhaps her dog is especially nervous. Whatever the case, it obviously upset you. But at least it was a one off for you. For her, it must be constant stress trying to police the public pavement in front of her own front door every time another dog owner goes past.

She needs to train her dog not to be reactive to other dogs.

Good luck with that.

I would have laughed and carried on walking.

There’s always a Karen !

Hear, hear.
Sexist and insulting to anybody whose given name it is.
Hadn’t expected to see it on GN but maybe ArthurAskey is a misogynistic male.

Magenta8 Fri 31-Oct-25 19:22:35

I don't like the use of the name Karen as a pejorative term either, especially as there does not seem to be a male equivalent.

Allira Fri 31-Oct-25 18:50:26

Supposedly Council Jobsworths Officers

Redhead56 Fri 31-Oct-25 18:48:43

I would have told the woman to muzzle her dog to stop it barking and said I will walk where I want.
I would like to know who actually issues on the spot fines to dog owners?

Diggingdoris Fri 31-Oct-25 18:47:11

Walking my dog a few weeks ago I was stopped in my village by 2 council wardens asking if I had a poo bag with me. I was able to show them I had. They said they'll be doing spot checks all over my city and surrounding villages. So now I make sure I have 3 bags with me every time, as on a rare occasion my dog will do 2 poos on a walk, and I'd hate to be stopped and have to explain that I'd just used all my bags!

Allira Fri 31-Oct-25 18:42:57

Sorry, Musicgirl
Fat finger.

Allira Fri 31-Oct-25 18:42:30

Well said, Mamo and Musucgirl.

All the Karens I know are lovely and there are probably some Gransnetters who are named Karen too, who are fed up of hearing this.

Mamo Fri 31-Oct-25 18:40:14

There’s always a Karen !

Please do not use this expression, which is generally recognized now as being hurtful and offensive to all Karens and those who named them!

Musicgirl Fri 31-Oct-25 18:27:10

NanaTuesday, you have done nothing wrong. She may have had problems with neighbours complaining about her dog barking, as Chaitriona said, but it was certainly not your fault and you were not to know that there was a reactive dog when you were innocently walking along the road. Think no more of it.

Allira Fri 31-Oct-25 18:10:07

It's ok, Barbadosbelle but thank you anyway.

It's Gransnet, isn't it!!

Barbadosbelle Fri 31-Oct-25 17:59:23

.
Not nice to call Allira a liar just because you aren't uptodate with the Law or the News.

It did happen. It does happen. Open your eyes.

There’s always a Karen !

Please don't use this term, especially on GN, where we are of the generation where many ladies are named Karen.

Magenta8 Fri 31-Oct-25 17:40:18

I am afraid I am guilty of telling someone where to walk their dog.

I had a horrible neighbour who used to come round regularly to shout at me for letting my cats go in my front garden. They liked to sit on the front wall together and watch the world go by.

When she walked by my house the sight of the two cats made him pull on his lead and drove him into a frenzy of barking. She threatened to let go of his lead and set him on them. Once I suggested that it might help if she walked him up the other side of the road and she yelled "Why should I!"

Definitely a case for Graeme Hill.

Nanny27 Fri 31-Oct-25 17:35:17

If her dog barks everytime a member of the public passes her door with a dog then she needs to train the dog properly.

SueDonim Fri 31-Oct-25 17:14:33

For her, it must be constant stress trying to police the public pavement in front of her own front door every time another dog owner goes past.

It’s not her business to police the public pavement, she should be policing her own dog by training it not to bark.

Anyway, I’m mainly here to say how adorable your pups are, NanaTuesday. 🤩 In the past, we’ve had two CKC, both tricolours. We had them at separate times but I do think they’re happiest when they have doggy company, they do so like to cuddle up.

I do not believe you would be fined for not having a poop bag....That is not true...or enfor able

I don't tell whoppers!

It was on the main BBC or ITV News 😲

I did wonder if it was a scam because I certainly wouldn't pay an on-the-spot fine to anyone. But apparently it was not.
