Why won’t people wear masks

About a week ago, DH and I finally recovered from a three week long coughing virus which put us in bed for a week. This morning, DH went to our village shop where he met a friend who told him, while coughing and spluttering all over him, that she had a dreadful cold. Wouldn’t it have been common courtesy for her to wear a mask in that situation? I think it means we shall have to wear a mask whenever we go out.

I think wearing a mask is still perceived to be strange by some people.

It would be considerate if people with an infectious disease wore a mask or better still kept away from others if possible.

If we were meant to have masks, God would have provided them.

I have carers coming 3 times a day. I have stage 4 cancer. I complained because my morning carer had a cold and wasn't wearing a mask. Now everyone but her wears one. She's also told me she'd never have a flu or COVID vaccination because she was ill after her first one.

I suggest you ask her manager if they can please provide her with them - or better still buy your own FFP2 (or better) and wear it when she comes

Gran22boys Tue 10-Feb-26 13:53:56

I think everyone who has a cold should wear one. After the Covid epidemic wearing a mask is not deemed odd. I wish everyone working in hospitals and in catering would wear them. The Chinese have always worn them.

I cannot understand people who cough and splutter all over others. When my husband had a heart operation a few months ago a young woman came to visit the man in the next bed and was dripping with an awful cold/virus, I actually heard her say to the man she was visiting that her child had been sent home from school with a terrible rash all over his body. Hospitals give information over the phone and have posters up asking people not to come into the hospital if they have a virus or vomiting and diahorrea.
So stupid. Most of the men on the ward were old/elderly with other serious health conditions.
If someone feels unwell for whatever reason they should stay at home or at the very least wear a mask when in public places, and certainly never set foot in a hospital unless they need urgent care.

I am not fan of mask wearing and certainly would not wear one going out but if I had such a bad cold I would stay at home and not spread it around.

rafichagran Tue 10-Feb-26 14:03:06

I am not a fan of wearing masks, but as a carer, she should be told too not asked, especially when dealing with vunerable patients.

Post-Covid mask-wearing was no longer mandatory and I , along with many others ,I suspect, was greatly relieved to lose the restriction ( hot and sweaty; misted-up specs; communications difficulties).
I'll revert if medically necessary or if a worried or vulnerable individual asks me to do it.
There's been no reversion to mandatory mask-wearing for Flu here in SW France.
OH and I have had all our jabs and we hope they will protect us from severe episodes of respiratory diseases.

Usedtobeblonde Tue 10-Feb-26 14:22:24

I hated wearing a mask and was pleased when it being mandatory ended.
However I still realise how bad a cold virus is for some.
I had a very bad cold early December and I stayed at home until it was better, I am lucky I can do that.
I think most people I see wearing masks are doing it to protect themselves not to protect others.
I don’t think that that is the way it works.

Smileless2012 Tue 10-Feb-26 14:24:33

There's no need to cough and splutter over anyone even if not wearing a mask.

You are right. It is those with a cold or other virus who cannot stay at home who should wear a mask to protect others. Of course people can wear a mask to protect themselves but with airborne viruses that can enter via the eyes it is not very effective.

He did, you just have to collect them yourself. God helps those who help themselves.

They can be bought in any chemist or free in .hospitals or GP.

I have had a sore throat and cough , I stayed in so not to spread my germs
If I couldn’t stay in I had masks ready for use , but I’m much better now
At least have a big wad of tissues to cough into … AS FOR SNEEZING ! don’t aim in at your nearest and dearest , have big tissues ready
Coughing or sneezing into your bare hand is not the way to go

M0nica Tue 10-Feb-26 15:20:47

The efficaccy of masks unless those high tech ones with special air fliters is limited in the extreme. Look at anyone wearing a mask and you can see gaps all round the edge were infection can get out and in

By all means wear masks if they give you the confidence to go outside. But they have limited efficacy.

Usedtobeblonde Tue 10-Feb-26 15:21:46

Aren’t we supposed to sneeze into the inside of our elbow if we don’t have a tissue ready?
I think the theory is we don’t then touch surfaces without germ laden hand .

Did he provide you with clothes too? Or were you born wearing them?

AGAA4 Tue 10-Feb-26 15:26:41

When someone sneezes or coughs the viral load can travel some distance.
If a mask is worn surely it would stop so much infection getting into the air around and possibly save quite a few people being infected.

yogitree Tue 10-Feb-26 15:30:10

I went to outpatients today and wore a mask as I am just recovering from a nasty chest infection and didn't want another one. There was a sign on the door asking those with coughs and colds to wear masks. I did notice a nurse wearing a mask last time I was there.

kircubbin2000 Tue 10-Feb-26 15:34:38

I've never worn a mask and don't intend to now.

TerriBull Tue 10-Feb-26 16:15:51

Well I'd make it my business to keep well away from anyone else if I had a cold and I wouldn't appreciate anyone knowingly spreading their germs around, I think many of us developed that caution during and after Covid

I've read there's only one mask that's effective. I think those who are vulnerable would probably need to take the precaution of wearing one of those. Most masks are useless, that was something we had imposed on us during the pandemic. Possibly psychologically, when we were all worried, wearing them instilled some sort of visual false confidence. I certainly wouldn't want to wear one again.
