Im incredulous that women don't see marriage as security call in my opinion if you like.

As for getting 50% some do many dont, especially if they have assets or wealth of their own.
If they aren't married they get nothing.

Exactly butterandjam. When we bought our first house together, I had a bigger deposit than mr i, we had an agreement t drawn up with our solicitor about what happened. If one o f us died, o r left. We married two years later .

It's a forum for over 50s,it was never aimed at just women. Even the FAQ has a mention of men.

It's just occurred to me ( re men ). I must admit that for a long time I assumed that it was just female participants, but am perfectly happy to accept male opinions etc - it widens our knowledge.

No they don't, as many mostly women find out
A will can be changed, many men don't make wills or don't update them, you can gift assets to a spouse tax free, an spouse can inherit the total assets tax free, for a non spouse anything left in the will is subject to IHT rules.

Marriage has 2 big advantages, you cannot disinherit a spouse, a spouse will get a share of marital assets including pensions, it works both ways if a woman is the main breadwinner, the man gets part of her pension. It does not include business assets unless it is joint business.

Of course you can protect your finances by wills and joint ownership but you have to keep close control not too difficult without children, with a family it gets a lot more complicated

As a man, I like coming on here to try the competitions and puzzles. Naturally, I read what the women talk about and it's a lot more interesting than watching the news.

I just like it being mostly women. I do think on the whole we relate differently. Nothing personal.

Whatever GN blurb might say about men being welcome, it is still a site which is/was designed to look like a women’s magazine.

One only has look at the features for that. 99% of the photos are of women. Not one photo of a man on his own that I can see apart from the one trying to button his jeans under the heading menopause weight gain. I can’t see anything about men’s clothes or products or issues specifically concerning men. Clothing and make up advice for older women. What about clothing and grooming advice for older men?

Not that the features are updated. The one about Pension Credit (under work) is ten years old with links to material that has long since been withdraw and superseded. There’s still advice about coping with Covid lockdown. There are no competitions any more. The technology section is childlike.

And why is the design pink with a logo of two women and child if the site is meant to attract men as well as women?

I think the owners have long since forgotten they own GN. I can see it being shut down if and when Roberts finds the new investors she is looking for, as Sky was reporting a few weeks ago.

Meantime, if men want to participate in the discussion forum, it makes no odds. Of those few known to be men who do, I don’t see their perspective on general issues as particularly different to anyone else’s.

I suspect the private messages some receive are generated by bots, looking for key words in public posts, else everyone would be receiving them and they aren’t.

It would be interesting to know who these bots are targeting and what they appear to have in common. Are they targeting those with health issues, people looking for emotional support?

I ve spent half my adult life either married or co habituating and half living alone and being my own security blanket, and after all the crxx that happening in the first half of my adult life I much, much prefer to have my own security, I had none in either marriage, first used it all on himself, second was the worst businessman who ever existed. Then my cohabiter was a controlling adulterer.

BlueBelle. Bang goes that theory then but I don’t doubt that these bots are searching post on keywords else how are they selecting their targets and why? Age? Weight? Money? Lifestyle? Habits?

People do reveal a great deal about themselves on what is a public board (from which content is shared widely) including where they bank (foolish imo).

I’m sure the majority of women are sensible enough to delete and block these speculative messages and report the account to the mods. It could be nothing more than prank but it only takes one gullible person to be taken in for a scammer to profit.

Men and women are all welcome but there will always be some weirdos male and female.

I joined Gransnet when my grandson was born. I had scoured the ‘Net looking for some forum or group for grandfathers without success. I have never made any attempt to hide my gender and in fact I preface most of my posts with “As one of the male grandparents on this forum, here’s my view……”

And as for messaging individual members -I didn’t actually know that was possible!
