Talking to people in wheelchairs

Usual supermarket shop and as usual a member of staff addresses DH in a wheelchair as 'hello, young man'. If he was on two feet they wouldn't have said anything to him. AIBU to find this incredibly patronising, to address him, aged 81, as you might a child? He puts up with it, and I know they think they are being friendly, but DH held a chief managerial position in the Immigration Service before his stroke, and his cognition is still fully intact.

If they want to be friendly, could they not just say 'hello sir, can I help you with anything'? 😡
