Sonnet for my grandson aged 5

Lovely poems. Yes cherish their babyhood and young years. I look at my 6'2" grandson and GD who is now a mother herself and wonder where the years went. Was is really 15 years ago that I took them to see James and the Giant Peach at the theatre with a visit to McDonalds afterwards as a special treat? So when DGD brings great grandson to visit (fortunately they live locally) I try to make the most of every minute.

I've just had a very long and rambling phone conversation with DGS age 2. There were lots of hello, juice, no, Lego, brum, brum. I wish I had a video phone as I would love to see him. Not long to wait though, I,'m visiting in the Easter holidays.

Thankyou, Mishap. My grandsons now live abroad so those memories are all the more precious. I'd love a cuddle right now!

My DGD sometimes has her daytime nap on my lap when she has her day a week here. How I treasure those times. And it makes my DD jealous as she will not do it for her!

We are so lucky to have GC and to be able to experience those lovey times all over again.

That's lovely, rockgran. I've just been gazing on my own sleeping DGS's beautiful face and reflecting on how blessed I am.

How lovely - it reminds me of a "free style" poem I wrote for my baby grandson years ago. It still makes me cry for his lost babyhood.

HOLDING THE BABY

The house is littered with the evidence of a grandchild’s visit.
Chaos in every room, weariness in every bone.
But now….. that precious moment when,
heavy in my arms. he relaxes and relinquishes his grip upon the day.

In the darkened room
My eyes now accustomed to the gloom
I gaze upon his perfect face now stilled in sleep.
Job done.
Time to put him down in his awaiting cot…
but…..
stealing a few moments more of this blessed peace
I claim my blissful reward…..
And hold him.

That's great Mishap. My GS is 5 today and this describes his infinite curiosity well.

My son loved dinosaurs from that age too... and didn't give up on the theme, he became a geologist

That is lovely mishap and so well suits a five year old (what is it about dinosaurs that makes all DGC fascinated at that age?). I hope you put a copy in a safe place for him when he grows up.
