Christmas windows

What a lovely thread this post is. The windows are beautiful.

Ali08 I used to live in the North East as well. One of the main events was to go to Newcastle to see the Fenwicks christmas windows! Fabulous! I think it might be on YouTube.

What a fantastic idea! I cannot imagine that happening in our village.

One thing I have missed since leaving the North East is Fenwicks windows in Newcastle!!
Every year they do something different in the windows. It could be one long theme, or a different thing in each window, and I remember my mum taking me to see them each year until I was old enough to go by myself!
Friends have tried to get pics, but there were often crowds of people in front of them.

Unfortunately our windows that face the road are not rooms, they're hallways, bathrooms, utility or landing, so not lit after dark. If they were I'd definitely decorate them.

You can buy window marker pens for writing or drawing on windows, it cleans off easily.

We had fun with this last year. DD has a large picture window that can be seen easily from the road that most of the primary children walk past on the way to school. We did Father Christmas coming down the chimney. Mantelpiece was decorated appropriately To look like a real sitting room.

Exactly Tamayra, except I used tissue paper. Any template will do (even cookie cutters!), and then arrange in a circle at regular intervals to make a 'star'. The overlapping tissue gives an extra design in the middle.

We did this in our estate last year, still to organise this year’s.

Looks as if the donkey had fallen over!!

This was dd’s window last year - I know she won’t mind me posting it.

I am known for my love of Penguins, so people have given me many over the years. My Christmas window is therefor easy - an upturned box or drawer with a mirror on top, lightly covered in cotton wool with some sparkles sprinkled over. Then all my penguins - ceramic, fluffy, metal, dotted about in family groups. Tinsel across the wooden bar (sash and case window) with some of the smaller penguins perched there. All lit up by a couple of strategically placed torches, though this is not really necessary as there is a street light across the road which lights up the window.

Lovely idea. DD’s local area did it last year - something for the COVID-ridden Advent. Each house of 24 undertook to decorate a front window on a given date.
So every night after dark the children enjoyed a walk to see them.
Some lights and anything Christmassy on the windowsill, plus IIRC some things were hung from the curtain rail. The big FC I had knitted was hung from the curtain rail - luckily he wasn’t very heavy!

The Christmas advent window trail was so popular where I used to live. We asked people to donate to the foodbank if they enjoyed the windows so it did some good as well as made people smile.

Even the most simple windows were wonderful so don't be put off if you're not artistic. My favourite ones were the local shop who did a Christmas scene with a toy train going around it and the vicarage where the vicar's children had made a fairy lit nativity scene with their toys....complete with a very large furry pelican and a Lego quad bike!

If you are not artistic ( like me), if you search on Ebay for Christmas Window Decals if will get lots of lovely ideas for decorating windows. They are quite cheap. Make sure you get reusable ones as they are easy to get off.

You can make lovely snow scenes cheaply with black paper and newspaper we did it in a poorly funded school I worked in. Cut the black to make the ground then blue tack to the panes then cut all the scenes out of black print newspaper trees, Father Christmas ,houses, snowmen etc then some snow flakes place a standard lamp near by. Or you can do the same for a nativity , dunes and three wise men in black on one side and a stable with characters in newsprint.Then a few black palm trees on the other. Again snow flakes in newspaper all stuck with tiny pieces blue tack. lights along your window sill.

Many of our shop windows are painted with lovely Christmas scenes every year (must be a local artist) and I always find them so cheerful and uplifting.

I also drew a dragon with DGS with a chap on utube. Step by step instructions. I was so pleased with it as I am so not artistic.

A nearby village does and Advent trail, with a new window unveiled each day from 1-24 December, all nativity scenes, so Donkey, Joseph, Mary, Stars, Shepherds, Angels, Stable, Baby Jesus.

All of these windows are beautiful. I'm not very artistic! DD is a P1 teacher and good at these kind of things. Didn't take it from me ?

My daughter's estate had advent windows so each of the advent houses were given a number and the children had to find the window with the day number on it. Parents used a WhatsApp group. It was a fun thing not a competition and other houses without numbers took part too. Encouraged them to go out for a walk after tea even if it was cold and wet. The children loved it especially DGS1 who was 7 at the time.
