These three pieces have been accepted for the show. They are entries from three well know comedians.
What do you think ?

Thanks for your interest damaskrose My DDs one is called “Marked Card” and it’s inspired from a vintage family photo, my DGD (aged 16)’s one is a portrait of her Dad called “Father figure”. I’m sure the traditionalists won’t like them , but DDs one has sold, DGDs one is not for sale.

So Amy is your DD... she's very talented

vegansrock they are both great. Well done to your DD and DGD

I like them both vegansrock Are you also an artist?

It's made me think about going to the Summer Exhibition as I haven't been since before the pandemic.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 10-Jul-24 11:35:40

How talented they are. You must be very proud.

That was meant to be a proud face but it looks a bit odd! Sorry.

Shameless boasting. My DD and her DD ( my GD) both have paintings in this year’s RA show.

Could we see them vegansrock? I’m sure you have every right to be proud! ☺️

I’m going in a couple of weeks so I’ll report back. Critics are all well and good but if you were to read, say, four reports they would all say something different! I think I’ve already said that I bought a print from the exhibition. I was sent a link to the exhibits and loved one of them. They are all sold now.

I’m shamelessly old fashioned in my artistic preferences. I love a Titian or a Canaletto, Vermeer or Rembrandt. Even Impressionism is a step too far, although I can see the artistic merit. These attempts pictured here are just daubs to me, but there again so is a Picasso! Art is very subjective and there are no right or wrong ways to appreciate it. The so called ‘experts’ who tell us what is good or bad are generally too concerned with their own reputations to be really in touch with those outside their rarefied world!

This year's show has not been received well by critics. I have never been but really must try to go this year.

I am often amazed at the prices some of these sorts of work command. And yet, on the Antiques Road Show, there are sometimes some beautiful old paintings which, although the valuers say they are worth a lot of money, only command a few hundred pounds, rather than thousands of pounds.

How wonderful Glenfinnian You must be so proud. A work with a lot of love and integrity I would think. Even if the artist is only 12. Well done to him 👏👏👏

Im going as my nephews son (12) has a picture exhibited there! It is a tribute to Jurgen Klopp!

Amazing what passes as art these days.

If those entries were done by members of the public they wouldn’t stand a chance. The cult of celebrity allows all sorts of third rate offerings to be fawned over because they are by celebrities. Is it just me that is sick and tired of celebrities being put on a pedestal?

My granddaughter had a piece in the exhibition a few years ago, only around 7 or 8 at the time. It was a sketch that she did in her lunch hour because she forgot she was supposed to have done something over the wknd. It was far from anything special except to parents and GP's but she was thrilled.

My daughter-in-law worked at the Royal Academy for many years, and was very involved with the Summer Exhibition. She now works freelance. I quite miss the connection.

Lizzie44 Tue 09-Jul-24 11:54:59

Same old story... celebrity sells.

M0nica Tue 09-Jul-24 11:13:52

The thought of all those naked men in such close contact with cycling saddles and cycling makes my eyes water just at the thought.

Witzend Tue 09-Jul-24 10:32:20

Dh is a member and I’ve been before (not this year though) - there have always been masses of all sorts. Anything I really liked, reasonably priced, was always already sold, though. Favourite last year was a man sitting on a sofa with a glass of beer, with a dog snuggled up beside him. I do not have the most sophisticated tastes!

But last year my outstanding memory, I’m afraid to say, is of walking away right afterwards, and seeing a couple of hundred naked cyclists (nearly all male) cycling down Piccadilly! It was baking hot, too - I did wonder whether there’d be a plethora of sunburnt willies later.

I think it is rather like books. If you are well known you get promoted. Whatever you turn out.

Lovetopaint037 Mon 08-Jul-24 14:55:00

I went for years as I paid for a membership and enjoyed many shows. However as the years went by I found that buying a programme was the only way to enjoy some of the rubbish that was presented as art. You could then laugh at the ridiculous prices that some of the work was demanding. I cancelled my membership during Covid and reinstated it the year before last but what was being shown was disappointing. Also I wasn’t keen on the renovations and new lay out as a lot more walking was necessary. Went one time and took my tired legs up to an exhibition by an artist who presented his portraits as a blank oval for the faces. The blurb described him producing several paintings a day. That said it all. Eventually I cancelled my membership as saw nothing to tempt me to make the journey.

I used to love going to the summer exhibition. Can't make it now. Mixed feelings regarding those those paintings. I'm not keen, except for the use of bright colour which I like. I don't think i would pay good money for them, but I do think the more varied an exhibition is, is great.

vegansrock Mon 08-Jul-24 06:39:47

My DDs and GDs paintings are not abstract so cannot be dismissed as a few splashes of colour. BTW my DDs painting sold on the first day of opening, my GDs painting is not for sale, it is a portrait of her father. I haven’t been to the whole show yet - going next week, but I am very excited and will take a photo of myself in front of each of their paintings!

Last year I was taken to the RA summer show by my DS and BiL, whose interest and knowledge of modern art is far more developed than mine. I do not mean by that that I only enjoy representational art, but that I am very selective about what abstract and conceptual art I enjoy.

Apologetically, half way round, I said to my sister, that I had yet to see a single piece of art that I wished to smuggle out and take home - and she agreed with me, as did my BiL.

Too many rooms were the personal choice of well known RA members who have a high media profle which they needed to maintain and I felt that their choices were chosen to impress a certain specific artistic group rather than what they really really liked.

However it was a great day out and a good giggle when discussing it on the train home

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 07-Jul-24 20:34:00

Wow, vegansrock, your shameless boasting is completely justified.
