Jack Vettriano

Years ago l went to his Retrospective at Kelvingrove. It was extremely well attended, broke records I believe. Always a pleasure to visit Kelvingrove, they also have wonderful art there.

I’ve got his The road To Nowhere. I love it and it brings back so many memories of happy times. Love his work.

They just had an early Vettriano, (signed Hoggan), seaside painting on the Antiques Roadshow. It was worth £1500 at the time of filming. I bet it would already be worth a lot more now.

By the way, he died at his apartment in Nice, not in Paris.

Too much of today's art just isn't artistic. It's in the style of the Emperor's New Clothes.

The lovvies dislike him because he was a commercial artist and appealed to the masses.

I have many Vettriano prints around our house. The one that is really poignant is Dance Me To The End Of Love. My nephew would look at it and tell everyone that the woman looks like his mum. His mum was the total opposite and had abandoned him when he was 4. He died at 23. Every time I see this picture I think of him and his comment.

He painted pictures that people want. He was criticised because the image of the singing butler had been sourced from a book of illustrations intended for artists to use. Lowrey also suffered by being liked by the masses and therefore not seen as a serious artist. The secret of art these days is to clothe it in a mystic that only the clever can understand. Never mind Jack your paintings will be enjoyed by many for many years while others are bought but not enjoyed.

I think Sir Alex Ferguson owns a couple of his paintings. One Scot to another.

I have that print too petra in our little place in Málaga. Must have had it over 20years now and I still love it.

I like the one of ‘your boys’ LauraNorderr and love the connotation! Very witty!

This chap stands accused of colouring in, like a child would do, in a colouring in book. According to his website he has admitted doing this but carried on regardless, presumably because of the big money he was making from people who obviously did not care if he was a real painter or not.

I also love his work. This was my bargain - £3, including the frame, from a charity shop!

I have two of this print. One in our house and another in a property we rent out.

I just love it! I love all his work. The art snobs don’t rate his work but I don’t care because if a picture draws you in and gives you pleasure that’s enough for me.

I liked his work. I saw a few prints in a shop window, and his pictures stood out, a different quality.
Because he was commercially successful, much of the art world affected to despise him, but i don't think he was bothered.

I believe he was self taught. His pictures show a great deal of skill and are very atmospheric.

Sad news. I too like his work. My four sons bought this one for me, supposedly represents them on the beach. I love it.

The hotel we stayed at for my 60th had a Jack Vettriano themed bedroom which our friends stayed in, it was absolutely amazing.
