Unpick jumper

I knitted a Christmas jumper for my GD and it’s too short. Can I unpick the rib and lengthen it that way?

It depends on whether you knitted it top down or bottom up. If you started with the rib and knitted ‘up’, then no, you can’t lengthen it - it will have to be unravelled from the top.

If you started at the neck and knitted ‘down’, you can unravel from the bottom and add in length.

You could knit a band, like a cummerbund, and sew it on the bottom of the rib. Extend it downwards that way.

As it’s for your GD could you knit a nice Christmas coloured frill and stitch it on the rib , maybe in a sparkley wool. It would be such a shame to unpick it , Hope this helps ,

Ouch, that’s a real nuisance - children seem to know when they have been measured for something and immediately put on a growth spurt.

You could try picking up the cast on stitches and crocheting an extension. Match it with a crochet add-on to the cuffs and maybe the neck so it looks intended.

Hope it works out OK whatever you decide to do.

Its very tricky to unpick a rib if that's the cast on edge, I'd say near impossible to achieve it without making a hash of it.

I agree that a crochet edge extension is the best bet, depending on how much it needs to be lengthened by (with a matching crochet edge to the sleeves, can be fewer rows).

I hope you can save it!

I am going to disagree with DD because it is possible to add length to a sweater knitted bottom up.

Care to be taken over the method used to avoid a half stitch offset in the finished work.

I am assuming the body of the garment is worked in stockinette.

Use smaller circular needles to pick up two rows of stitches from the main body using the right leg of each stitch. Leave a row in between. Make sure you have the right number of stitches paying particular attention to end “knot” stitches which can be lost.

Snip away the row in between to separate the two parts.

Working from the end where the yarn tail is, either lengthen the work bottom up and then graft the two pieces together using Kitchener Stitch. It’s fiddlier but means you can reuse the existing rib.

Or you can work top down and reknit the rib.

I like the frill idea and way back, just after WW2, when rationing was still in, I used to see my Mum lengthening many jumpers using PayneGreys method. Very good if you have the skill!

Ooops.

I do have a jumper I like very much with a short top and then a much longer, over the bottom sort of inner tube so the top sort of hangs free and the inner clings.

It sounds a bit weird but it does work honestly.

Add a peplum?

Thanks so much for your replies, such good ideas…I’ll let you know what I do 😀

I'd just pick up the stitches on the first row of rib and continue with the rib pattern, matching the plain with plain and the purl with purl, but upside down.

This would make a good challenge for Game of Wool!

Allira Wed 03-Dec-25 17:26:20

I knew there was a way to do it, PaynesGrey but couldn't remember exactly how.

However, it might be easier to pick up the stitches and add an extension in crochet or a fancy knit stitch.

Hard to know without seeing a picture of the garment or knowing the age of the intended recipient. I'm imagining something in stockinette with a central festive motif so scope to add extra rows of stockinette in beweeen the rib and motif.

Yes.

I think that would be easier and probably quicker in the end.

Knotting isn't my forte ,
but I have lengthened cardigans and jumpers by adding on a band .
I've knitted a band but I was more successful using broad satin ribbon .
It looked deliberate and was successful .
