Much as I love embroidery I don't do tambour.

Yes, it's an old tambour embroidery hook (similar to rug hooks but very much finer). Tambour embroidery is done on a piece of close-weave fabric stretched over a frame (usually round, so it looks like a tambourine). You hold the thread at the back, pulling a loop through to the front with a hook, making a continuous chain that anchors itself stitch by stitch. Sorry, very hard to describe without showing you! I used to do a lot of it, attaching seed beads for texture - eyesight and dexterity are shot to the hot place now, so I haven't done it in years. Just search for "tambour embroidery" in Google Images - god, that takes me back!

It became popular in Europe around 1770 .

Oh, I have two of those embroidery frames my daughter left at home - is that what they're called? I never knew that and don't have one of those hooks, and only used the frames once.

I thought at first it was a needle threader until closer inspection. Google Lens has some weird and wonderful suggestions too.
