Hi pensionista its good to have another Grandad about, its been too quiet in the shed lately.
how are schools handling students who memorize books but can't actually decode
How many Grandads do we have and are they happy to be asked things? Step forward lads!
Hi pensionista its good to have another Grandad about, its been too quiet in the shed lately.
Welcome pensionista - lovely to see a new grandad. I don't have an ipad but have a Motorola tablet instead as I prefer the android way of doing things. Agree completely with the modern technology being an excellent way of keeping in touch with family abroad. How different from the way our parents generation had to cope when children moved away.
I use Facebook mainly for sharing family photos and although I've joined Twitter I admit to not really understanding that process. I joined because I had a problem with EDF energy and one "tweet" sorted out the problem immediately whereas numerous phone calls and email had come to nothing.
We must keep up with technology - it really annoys the children when we're ahead of them
Hello, pensionista, good to have you on board. We need a few more grandads. Your enthusiasm for the i-pad is infectious and I am having to restrain myself, although I have a perfectly good laptop and the Android phone is fine for taking pictures - must have a go at the eyesores and potholes around town!
I have given up my garden shed, for my Grandchildren have bought me an iPad and now I have become an Apple freak. It beats all those lonely hours on my own in the shed.
It is amazing, my lovely wife and I often chat on Facetime for hours (which is a lovely piece of Apple software.) It saves me having to sit in the lounge to talk to her, we even sam to have abider range of subjects.
On a serious note, we both love the iPad it keeps us in touch with our family across the world, in Australia, France, New Zealand,Spain and USA almost daily and we see them all as if they are in the same room.
It is a fantastic way of communicating with our kids and grandchildren who live 100's of miles away and also many friends we had lost contact with. We are both like young kids in this new IT world, Not bad for 80 year olds.
My iPad has some fantastic brain teaser games, I can even play against friends in the USA from my own fireside chair.
I can even let off steam on Twitter and Facebook and tell the politicians what I really think about them. I even had a go at the media last week, it keeps me happy and active, I've even walked around the town taking pictures on the iPad of eyesores and forward then to the Council asking them to clean them up. I got a very positive response and thanks. Already some of the eyesore sites have received attention. Role on my 90's and further innovations to keep the old brain box ticking.

Heys guys :-)
I haven't been on here for a while as I have been working/studying/etc..
A girl's gotta to work to support my expensive tastes (tongue in cheek)!
Thanks for your kind responses and well received advice regarding the bathplug & the ceiling joists. Much appreciated. Just about to haul the ladder out as we speak.
Once again, thanks to you kind gentlemen - good to have you all here. We are all people first, then grandparents and male/female should not be the defining characteristic
Back later.
Naughty, classy and tarty lol Sounds good to me girls.
Nice One
Well I think 'tarty' beats naughty! Think I'll go for an eclair topped with dark chocolate - a bit sophisticated but not too sweet!
Strawberry Tart beat that
Now then Glamma you've introduced an interesting thought! If you were a cream cake, what would you be?
BB we are like cream cake's naughty but nice
Ah! BB you clearly haven't yet read some of the racier threads here! However it's perfectly possible to be classy and a bit naughty at the same time.
Ariadne. Thank you for the welcome. Nice class of lady on here. :-)
Hello, Bristolboy! Welcome.
NSG I will now be informing all my pals that any alcohol I consume will be going towards my 5 a day allowance.
I tried (really) to make wine. I had a batch in the airing cupboard bubbling away but, unfortunately, it exploded and everything in the cupboard ended up dyed pink. The wine was - or would have been - damson.
Making wine is a great hobby glamma. I started in the 1970's and like your friend, had some interesting Tupperware parties. Taking a long time to get home was the least of it. Some people ended up in the wrong home.
I stopped, got rid of all the equipment and did nothing for 25 odd years until 3/4 years ago when I started making it again.
Now retired so I have more time to faff with it. As most of it's made from fresh fruit, then the resulting wine contributes towards my 5 a day!
NSG my lovely neighbour(no longer with us now) used to make the most fab nettle wine we used to have a great time at her famous Tupperware partie's at her house which was directly opposite mine, when it was time to come home it could take about half an hour to cross the road depending on how much wine you had consumed, good day's and happy memories, and sore hangovers.
Notsogrand. lol Thanks for the welcome. Nice people on here.
I wouldn't affect your bank balance Bristolboy, I make my own wine!
Welcome to GN....look forward to seeing you around the threads
Em I am new to GN. still not sure how I got seduced ynto here. Oh yes, it was from twitter. 5 GC at the moment. i could cope with the varied tastes, but unsure whether my waistline and my bank balance would cope with the hits lol
Any chance of making the red a good Rioja ?
Hi Bristolboy and welcome. By new GD, do you mean the first GC has arrived recently, or that you are new to GN? Now, a dilemma, mine would be the steak and the red please - how do you deal with two such vastly different ladies?
Makes note that Nanny1 is a lady with taste...and expensive taste lol
Welcome BB, Ronald, we need more GD's , we hang out in GD's shed.
Nanny1, "O" ring, take the plug along to a specialist plumbers merchant ( not B&Q etc). they will have a selection of "O" rings and will fit a new one, shouldn't cost more than £1. Alternatively, if you know the size, they are available cheaply on eBay.
Ceiling joists - tap the ceiling with your knuckle or a piece of wood, the ceiling will sound hollow where there is no joist and solid where there is, marke the centre of the solid sounding area, this should be the centre of the joist. Do this across the ceiling and mark where you think the joists are. Measure the distance between your marks, they would normally be evenly spaced, if not repeat the process, with practice you will hear the difference in sound. To make sure, use a bradawl or small screwdriver to poke a small hole through the ceiling to check that you are hitting the joist, if you get it wrong, it is easy to fill the small hole.
OR -- spend £20 ish on an electronic device that will locate them for you, I have both, but find the knuckle tapping the easiest.
Crimson, tell your Daughter to start planting NOW, don't waste a season. You can sow Broad Bean Aquadulce Claudia until mid November, you will then get early crops in the late spring and the ground will be clear in time to plant summer crops. Aquadulce is the only hardy broad bean that can be sown now, do not try any other variety, the frost will kill them, Aquadulce will stand through the hardest frost. You can also plant Japanese onion sets or Shallots this month. I have planted both Broad Beans and Shallots this week.
