Ways to improve getting older

The Times this morning has a list of ways to improve getting older (behind their paywall, so I'm not leaving a link in principle). A lot of us aren't nearly there yet, but I wondered what gransnetters' would be?

We could also come up with some for improving middle age, of course. I agree with The Times about bigger print on menus. I'd quite like some internships for older people too, so I could think about different kinds of jobs.

Enjoy life and live it to the full. Don't save for a rainy day, spend what you have if it gives you pleasure.

A younger man? - I have enough trouble keeping up with the old one I have got!
Nothing vital wanes as they age, in my experience!
Talking about taking a sabbatical at 50 while you are still relatively fit - I actually completely jumped off the professional wheel at that age. I re-trained in photography and pursued 10 years of working in arts outreach, running singing workshops, picure editing for a magazine, general photography etc. - had a great time and it was a huge tonic and what I had always wanted to do. More or less retired now - just take on projects that I really like now and again, but also help to run various arts projects voluntarily, including a villages choir.
My Ds say that it was a great example to them not to get stuck in a rut and that anything is possible - so that was another positive spin-off.
I was very lucky that my OH was happy to put up with the relative poverty that my decision resulted in.

For two years I dated a man who was nine years younger than me... but I much prefer a man to be my age or a tad older. My cousin said younger men keep you on your toes...I don't want to be on my toes! wink

I have done it again ---- where do all these lines come from ? Sorry .

Hear hear chrisy -- I totally agree with you . I have so many interests and hobbies that I haven't time to get old . I thank my lucky stars that I am well and able to do so much and get on with doing all the things I enjoy (gransnet included!!).This all helps I am sure .I take a leaf out if an elderly neighbour's book --- mix with all ages and open your mind to all there views . She lived for a very active 93yrs.God Bless her !

Make the effort to go out and meet people. Join a club or group that has similar interest as your self. Try to remain positive in what you undertake.

Annobel Fri 21-Oct-11 13:20:38

nanny1, you are naughty, but I like you! grin

supernana Fri 21-Oct-11 12:39:48

nanny1 we have a shared, quirky sense of humour. My man doesn't need to support my bits - but feels it is the gentlemanly thing to do. I certainly do not need to support his bits. They are totally self sufficient...wink

Elegran Fri 21-Oct-11 12:39:10

Love it nanny1

bagitha Fri 21-Oct-11 11:13:07

Yes it would! grin

nanny1 Fri 21-Oct-11 11:10:53

Ah - that would be the "supporting people in old age cartoon" would it bagitha?

bagitha Fri 21-Oct-11 11:08:33

And your profile page made me smile, nanny1 smile.

I had a toy boy some years ago grin He was 28 and I was 44. I did go around with a huge grin on my face for several weeks, but actually in the end, the lack of common references due to the age difference turned into an issue for me. But it was certainly fun while it lasted wink

harrigran Wed 19-Oct-11 11:28:26

There was a lady in our street had a toy boy (about 28 years younger) oh I did envy her. He was always working on the house, he seemed to be able to turn his hand to anything envy

Elegran Wed 19-Oct-11 10:23:31

But you have fun while you stress out.

bagitha Wed 19-Oct-11 09:42:36

wink Trust me to have read something which says the opposite about toy boys. I forget where it was (may even have been BBC), but apparently having a toy boy adds to the 'stress' of aging. Such a shame.

Jeany Wed 19-Oct-11 09:31:00

How much younger does he have to be to qualify? At least ten years?

harrigran Wed 19-Oct-11 00:05:37

Or just get a toy boy grin

Regular yoga to keep those joints and muscles supple. There's nothing like being creaky and doing the "ooh, ow" groan when you get up to make you feel and appear old sad And it is never too late to start!
Also drink lots of water every day to keep your skin blooming. Works for me smile
