My Nans favorite saying was..Everything has its own importance.

I love sayings--I think its because they are a form of guidance and I need all the guidance I can get..

helshea hello good to see you back smile

absent Fri 18-Jan-13 20:00:07

Hello again helshea. I give up – who was piffy on a drum?

Lilygran Fri 18-Jan-13 20:02:34

Fur coat, no knickers?

helshea Fri 18-Jan-13 20:03:01

My goodness.. I have no idea what is going on in this thread but boy is it weird!

Lilygran Fri 18-Jan-13 20:04:04

I thought it was family sayings but now I'm not sure.........

absent Fri 18-Jan-13 20:06:28

My father, when commenting disapprovingly on someone else's parenting style, used the expression "Shut up he explained".

helshea Fri 18-Jan-13 20:08:22

Absent - I think a cross between pea on a drum and piffy on a rock? but still not sure what either means?

absent Fri 18-Jan-13 20:09:38

Clear as mud helshea. grin

helshea Fri 18-Jan-13 20:10:18

Seems to be a bit of handbags at ten paces on this thread! Come on life is far too short.

helshea Fri 18-Jan-13 20:11:43

I just remember my old auntie used to say.. i felt like "piffy on a drum" .. wasnt sure where it came from.. Sorry absent - like to be a little obscure!

annodomini Fri 18-Jan-13 20:30:44

Glad to see you on line again, helshea.

jeni Fri 18-Jan-13 20:45:09

Google says, it should be piffy on a rock bun and probably comes from piffy= patience. A rock bun = cake.confused Are we any wiser?

absent Fri 18-Jan-13 20:51:48

Oh is that like a combination of Leonardo's Virgin on the Rocks and Shakespeare's patience on a monument? (I don't think she's the same Patience as Gordon Brown shafted so seriously when he was Chancellor.)

jeni Fri 18-Jan-13 20:53:18

shock who was Patience?

jeni Fri 18-Jan-13 20:53:36

And him adon of the manse!

jeni Fri 18-Jan-13 20:54:05

A son!

gracesmum Fri 18-Jan-13 20:55:47

Virgin on the rocks sounds like a very nice cocktail, doesn't it? grin

helshea Fri 18-Jan-13 20:57:54

Piffy has a lot to answer to. lol

absent Fri 18-Jan-13 21:00:57

gracesmum Well a Virgin Mary is a classic non-alcoholic cocktail although I find the idea of non-alcoholic cocktails anathema. Shall we just call it a mixed drink for argument's sake? It wouldn't be that difficult to invent a Virgin on the Rocks.

gracesmum Fri 18-Jan-13 21:06:21

Baggsy I practise. I'll let you know when I think I have got it just right - but I may be some time. I love Bloody Mary(s) - they taste so healthy!!

Anne58 Fri 18-Jan-13 21:09:58

I think it was Prudence that Gordon Brown was so keen on, not Patience!

Ana Fri 18-Jan-13 21:11:42

'Dear Prudence'? grin

absent Fri 18-Jan-13 21:15:42

Bu the Virgin Mary probably tastes even healthier as it doesn't include vodka gracesmum.

You could do something like stir 4 measures each orange and lemon juice and 1 teaspoon caster sugar (that's for extra flavour) together in a mixing glass. Pour over ice (that's the rocks) into a tumbler and top up with Beaujolais Nouveau (that's the virgin). Decorate with a slice each of orange and lemon and serve.

gracesmum Fri 18-Jan-13 21:40:46

Sounds interesting - but I always think Beaujolais nouveau is over-rated. Friends in the village used to have beaujolais nouveau parties - it went down like lemonade but I remember feeling very fragile afterwards!!
How about something involving a fresh lemony flavour, like Limoncello?

jeni Fri 18-Jan-13 21:45:59

And me! Give me a good Amorone any day! I had one on the QE. It cost say it very quietly! pp. $112. For the bottle. blush
I did make it last two days and it was lovely!
