Following the success of The Roses last year, we're delighted to be involved in The Older People In The Media Awards (new name, same thing) in 2013.

As last year, there will be a special Gransnet award for the best older person's character in a film, TV or radio drama, chosen by gransnetters. (Last year, Maggie Smith won as the Dowager Lady Grantham in Downton Abbey). As last year, the character must have appeared between August last year and August this year.

Suggest nominations here. We'll have a chance to vote on a shortlist after the summer.

Full details on the page. You can also vote on all the other categories on the awards web page.

This is a really good way of generating discussion about the issues facing older people and how they are portrayed, so we are putting on our thinking caps here at GNHQ. That usually requires wine

Ooh yes!

Aka Fri 05-Jul-13 23:09:09

If it's the character we've to nominate then I suggest Mrs Brown.

why is choosing a man PC ??? I used to have a crush on James Bolam when he was a likely lad..and I quite fancy Kevin! I am just a softee for a NE accent!

j08 Fri 05-Jul-13 19:29:24

Yes. Very good lines. Corrie gold. smile

Maggiemaybe Fri 05-Jul-13 19:22:43

And that AA meeting when she laid into every member of her family. Comedy gold! Sadly she's no longer eligible for any award this side of the pearly gates.

Sylvia Goodwin (Stephanie Cole) or Gloria Price (Sue Johnston), the two best characters in Corrie, or at least the two with the best lines. Neither of them coming close to the late lamented Blanche Hunt (Maggie Jones) though:

"Like Postman Pat, do you? So long as you remember it's a work of fiction. 'Early in the morning, when the day is dawning?' Your real Postman Pat rolls up around noon wearing a pair of shorts and his breakfast. And, if he's not chucking elastic bands about like confetti, he'll be rifling through your birthday cards for ready cash, or leaving your valuables out on the step.

Nowt but propaganda, is this! And as for Mrs Goggins, she'd be cowering behind three-inch glass with a baseball bat under the counter... assuming that her post office hasn't been shut down, of course."

Meanie !!!

I like her a lot !

j08 Fri 05-Jul-13 19:10:28

Ha! Shows she's not a very good actress then. Can't get parts! grin

Nonu Fri 05-Jul-13 19:09:22

Bit harsh there , agree it is a white trailer trash show .

BUT a gal has to do what a gal has to do !!

Has to turn a buck , somehow .

grin

She's an ageing bimbo.

j08 Fri 05-Jul-13 19:03:03

here is what's ridiculous about Celia Imrie. She goes on trashy shows like this

Ana Fri 05-Jul-13 18:35:15

Yes, she's good - but has she been in anything recently? The character must have appeared between August last year and August this year in a film, TV or radio drama.

feetlebaum Fri 05-Jul-13 18:17:49

What's ridiculous about Celia Imrie?

As for Lewis - those questions have all been answered! Robbie and Laura Hobson (pathologist) were last seen getting very domestic over a Chinese takeaway...

How about Doreen Mantle? (Mrs Warboys in the late lamented ^One Foot in the Grave^)

j08 Fri 05-Jul-13 17:43:36

Oh for goodness sake! Leave off with all this pc rubbish! Choose a woman. hmm

Anyway, those two are both too young.

nanaej Fri 05-Jul-13 17:37:52

or James Bolam in New Tricks....

nanaej Fri 05-Jul-13 17:36:03

What about 'Robbie Lewis' played by Kevin Whately. A widower..should he retire or not, should he start a new personal relationship, he is excited at the prospect of becoming a grandfather....

Ana Fri 05-Jul-13 17:13:46

Crikey! She's younger than me....confused

j08 Fri 05-Jul-13 17:11:16

Celia Imrie is n' t old enough. And she's ridiculous

It should n' t be anybody who goes on on daytime television shows, like she does. "Daft Housewives" or something! hmm

Stansgran Fri 05-Jul-13 17:02:26

Celia Imrie's prett GD alongside Alison Steadman. And Judy Dench is fantastic.

j08 Fri 05-Jul-13 13:10:48

Yes. I like Stephanie Cole too.

grannyJillyT Fri 05-Jul-13 12:55:34

I like Stephanie Cole, she is a very versatile actress, from Tengo to Coronation Street. smile

radval Fri 05-Jul-13 07:19:46

Alison Steadman can't do wrong for me since Abigail's Party.

j08 Wed 03-Jul-13 14:10:29

I have found out who Alsion Steadman is.

She doesn't appear to have a website.

Although there have been some mentions of her in the Daily Mirror, Daily Express, and the Daily Mail.

hmm

j08 Wed 03-Jul-13 14:06:08

I think you will agree she is worth voting for. smile
