I'm not a grandad so I asked DH .....Stout and Ale

Both are delicious in beef pies.

Ale is a light beer like pale ale. Stout is like Guinness. Stout gives a stronger flavour, more depth. Well that's my experience. Sound yummy. Dinner tommorow?

Help!
This is actually a cooking question, but:-
What is the difference between stout and ale?
I want to make a beef and ale stew/pie
Don't know what liquor to purchase?
Can anyone help?
